I observed three diferent science experiments in class today!!

Balloon in a Bottle
How does it work?

The hot air in the bottle expands as the cool air outside the bottle contracts.
When you frst place the balloon over the mouth of the bottle, the air in the bottle is
hot. As the air cools from the ice water outside the bottle it contracts and pushes the
balloon into the bottle. This is why the air is taken from the balloon and sometimes
gets sucked into the bottle.
What you can do at home:

See what other materials you can use to suck into a bottle -- take advantage of
air pressure and see what happens!!
What you will need:

plastic water or pop bottle

large bowl

Balloon or other materials like hard boiled eggs

ice water

hot water
Cloud in a bottle
How does it work?

Water vapor, water in its invisible gaseous state, can be made to condense into
the form of small cloud droplets. By adding particles such as the smoke enhances the
process of water condensation and by squeezing the bottle causes the air pressure to
drop. This creates a cloud!
What you can do at home:

Observe diferent types of clouds that you see with your children!
What you will need to do the experiment at home:

2-liter clear plastic pop bottle

matches (children will need adult assistance to light matches)

warm water
Make it Rain
How does it work?

The cold plate causes the moisture in the warm air, which is inside the jar to
condense and form water droplets. This is the same thing that happens in the
atmosphere. Warm, moist air rises and meets colder air high in the atmosphere. The
water vapor condenses and forms precipitation that falls to the ground.
What you can do at home:

Make a rain cloud in a jar and discuss how it rains and what causes rain to form.
Review where rain comes from and the process of how rain clouds form!
What you will need:

Shaving cream

Water

Clear cups or jars

Blue food coloring or watercolors

Pipettes or droppers
