Minutes of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma

Saturday, May 3 ,2014

Food City, Bristol, Virginia

The meeting was called to order by President Sandra Jonas. Sandra welcomed everyone to the meeting
and thanked hostesses Teresa Hagy and Joan Littleford. Kathy Musick then introduced Jennifer Gobble,
the recipient of the $1,000 Alpha Zeta scholarship. Our three new members were also recognized.

Carol Propst presented the thought for the day, reminding us sisters can be found in all areas of our
lives. Carol challenged us to list all of the sisters who have influenced our lives.

Maureen Moffet, chairperson of the Membership Committee, introduced our new members. Our new
members are Gail Gilland, Liz MacIlwaine, and Judy Young. Stamps Sewell and Linda Strutner also
participated in the initiation ceremony by sharing information about our code of honor and the seven
purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma. After the lighting of the candles, the signing of constitution, and the
Delta Kappa Gamma Song, everyone welcomed our new members.

The minutes were read and approved by a voice vote after a motion by Lois Quillin and a second by
Mary Sue Smith. Brenda Bingham gave the treasurer's report, and it was accepted as read. The
ending balance in the checking account as of April 30, 2014, was $4,466.09, and the ending balance in
the savings account as of March 31, 2014, was $1,945.28.

Fourteen Alpha Zeta members attended the 2014 Leadership Development Seminar in Wytheville
on April 5. Several of our members stepped up and really did shine! Kathy Musick's workshop on
supporting early career educators was fantastic, and Teresa Hagy and Maureen Moffet displayed their
musical talents. Brenda Bingham and Susie McConnell received 25 year membership certificates. Amy
Sallee received a $2,500 IOTA state scholarship while Teresa Hagy received a $300 state stipend. Our
chapter also received the Gold Key Award.

Maureen Moffet reported that she presented the Virginia Scholars Award to Kimberly Thomidas
at Emory and Henry College's award ceremony. This award, a book and a plaque, is presented to
outstanding students preparing to become educators.

Sara Ellis, chairperson of the Rules Committee, informed us that there were a few minor revisions to the
bylaws, but the scope of the bylaws did not change.

Sandra then thanked everyone for their support and help during her two years in office. We were also
reminded to contribute to the Schools for Africa fund.

The business meeting was then closed, and the Installation of new officers was held. Linda Brittle,
chairperson of the Nominations Committee, presided over this ceremony with the help of retiring
President Sandra Jonas.
