Dresser-Rand Engineer Writes Comprehensive Guide to Dry Gas Seals

OLEAN, New York (November 7, 2005) - As a service to engineers, operators, maintenance personnel, purchasing personnel
and technical managers, John Stahley, manager of Project & Commissioning Engineering for Dresser-Rand has written a
comprehensive guide to dry gas seals. Titled Dry Gas Seals Handbook, published by PennWell Books, the book provides an
invaluable resource for those in industry making decisions involving compression seals.
In his book, Stahley clarifies the technological background and discusses real-life field operation of compression seals.
Through seven case studies, he breaks down common problems linked to dry gas seals. He further explains how these
problems were corrected and reveals the "lessons learned," complete with appendices of test reports.
Stahley's explanations are illustrated with more than 50 figures. He also offers assistance in selecting dry gas and barrier seals
through a set of guidelines, making this handbook ideal for anyone with decision-making responsibility for the application,
operation, or maintenance of these seals. A glossary of common terms associated with dry gas seal technology enhances
readability for even the novice engineer.
John Stahley holds a BS in industrial engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MBA in Management from St.
Bonaventure University. Stahley has held positions in engineering management, project management, and project engineering.
His current responsibilities at Dresser-Rand include managing installation and commissioning turbomachinery. Stahley is a
regular contributor of technical papers at engineering forums and has delivered several presentations on the topic of dry gas
seals.
