I completed my internship at Whitmer Human Resource Center, which is an elementary
school located within the Pontiac School District. The Pontiac School District has recently undergone some drastic changes in regards to its operations, which enhanced my learning experience even further. My mentor, Wendy Fitzpatrick, is currently the principal of the elementary school and has also worked as an assistant principal within the district. She has 17 years of administrative experience at the elementary and middle school levels. Her duties as a school leader are to ensure a safe environment for students and staff, and to make certain that all students are reaching their maximum potential. The school has been named a priority school by the State of Michigan for the past three years, so showing growth and increasing student achievement are also critical. Mrs. Fitzpatrick has a laid back approach when leading her staff. She is open to new ideas and welcomes everyones thoughts. She has a calm demeanor and interacts with students and parents in a positive manner. She will always listen to their side of the story first, before any decisions are made. Wendy is a member of several school and district wide committees. She has made a positive outreach within the community and several community organizations now volunteer their time at the school. I have learned many new ideas and approaches by having Wendy as my mentor. We have shared ideas with each other and have both grown personally and professionally because of this experience.
