French For Beginners Podcast – Lesson 11

The aim of this podcast is to introduce beginners to the French language in an informal and friendly way.
Initially we will cover some basic words and phrases and then move on to different themes that we feel
appropriate for adult beginners. If there is something that you particularly wish to learn, we would be
happy to hear from you.

What time is it? Quelle heure est-il ?

 Il est 14 heures et demie (Half past two)


 Il est 14 heures trente (Two thirty)
 Il est 14 heures et quart (Quarter past two)
 Il est 14 heures quinze (Two fifteen)
 Il est 15 heures 10 (Ten past three)
 Il est 15 heures quarante (Three forty)
 Il est 16 heures moins vingt (It is twenty to four) moins (less)
 Il est 16 heures moins le quart (It is quarter to four)

What is an infinitive verb?


Examples:

 Laver (to wash)


 Marcher (to walk)
 Regarder (to look)
 Danser (to dance)
 Jouer (to play)
 Parler (to talk/speak)
 Aimer (to like/love)

There are 3 group verbs in French, the verbs ending in ER (first/regular) IR (second/regular) RE/IR/OIR
(third/irregular)

How to conjugate an infinitive verb ending in ER (in the present tense)

E.G: Marcher (to walk) Practise with the verb Danser (to dance)
