Bali: island of the Gods
John Walker MSC
It was over thirty years since my last visit to this island paradise but whilst modern
architectural edifices have risen such as the international airport, much of the magic of Bali
remains unchanged. The people always smiling and only too pleased to offer help and
hospitality; a religious people with their own adaptation of Hinduism celebrating daily
offerings in temples, homes and virtually anywhere on the island.
I opted to stay in Ubud about ninety minutes from the airport and high in the hills. There
the pace is less frenetic compared to Kuta and Sanur on the coast. The Sankara is a
recently opened boutique resort snuggled amongst rice paddies and coconut plantations
about ten minutes from Ubud town centre, and it was here that I was based experiencing
the very best of Balinese hospitality.
