By: Samantha MacPherson Saves the Earth By recycling paper, we can help lessen the number of trees that are cut down Saves Energy It takes less energy to process recycled materials than to process virgin materials Reduces Waste Products in Landfills If we dont recycle, more and more garbage will go to landfills until they all get filled up Why Is It Important to Recycle? Canadians generate approximately 31 million tonnes of garbage a year and only recycle about 30 per cent of that matter Canada has over 10,000 landfill sites A littered aluminum can takes 500 years to disintegrate Glass would take 1 million years to break down naturally Did You Know Aluminum foil trays & wrap Boxboard, cereal, tissue, detergent-type boxes and egg cartons Cans, food and beverage, aerosol and paint Corrugated cardboard Drinking boxes, milk & juice cartons Glass bottles and jars Paper, newspaper, junk mail, envelopes, magazines and books (hard & soft cover) Common Recyclable Household Items Cigarette butts Drinking straws Plastic bubble wrap, zipper and stand-up pouches & cling wrap Plastic crinkle wrap (cereal, pasta or snack bags) Sharp items wrap in newspaper (i.e. broken glass, mirrors, knives, light bulbs) Styrofoam Waxed paper items (fast food cups like slushies) DO NOT RECYCLE: Check containers for recyclable symbols 1 through 7 Check bags for recyclable symbols 2 and 4
How to Tell if its Recyclable has many direct benefits (e.g., resource conservation); however, the indirect benefits of recycling are also significant. Indirect benefits of recycling can range from creating jobs and tax revenues to make communities stronger and more appealing to residents. The production, transport, and disposal of municipal solid waste leads to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHG emissions trap heat in the Earths atmosphere. The release of these gases occurs at every stage of a products life-cycle, thus contributing to climate change. However, certain measures can be taken to reduce the potentially negative effects on human health and the environment due to changes in the Earths atmosphere.
Climate change is causing polar ice caps to melt and causing many animals to be on the brink of extinction.
