Disposal of Non Biodegradable Waste

Non-biodegradable materials are the waste that cannot be broken down in nature. These materials cannot be
decomposed either by air, climate, moisture or soil. This type of waste cannot be dissolved naturally into the land.
The most common non-biodegradable waste are bags, bottles, cans, tins and other products made of plastic.
Dangerous chemicals and toxins are also non-biodegradable.

Disposal of non-biodegradable waste is a major concern, not just plastic, a variety of waste being accumulated. There
are a few ways to help non-biodegradable waste management and waste disposal methods.

Recycling: Non-biodegradable waste like glass, plastic, and metal are to be separated from other waste for
recycling. These materials can be taken to the nearest collection facility. Recycling such material saves landfills
space and it also reduces the amount of mined or manufacture to make new products. It also aids in energy saving
and reducing global climate change.

Combustion: Waste like plastic and rubber tires can be burned at combustion facilities. These make use of the heat
energy generated by the incineration process to steam or electricity; this in turn reduces the demand for non-
renewable energy sources like coal and petroleum.

Landfills: Landfills are long term storage area for non-biodegradable waste. Landfill is a carefully situated area,
which prevent contamination from the waste entering the area surrounding soil and water and it also helps to reduce
odor and pests.

Disposal of Hazardous Waste: Some products like oil used for motor, pesticides, batteries and paint are hazardous
materials. These materials are dangerous to the environment more than materials like plastic or rubber. Some
communities have special ways to dispose household hazardous waste safely. Special instructions for disposal are to
be followed that the listed on the container.

Here are a few effects of unscientific disposal of non-biodegradable waste:

 Non-biodegradable waste discarded to be land-filled will only accumulate. This is the main source of
pollution and litter.
 Debris of plastic in the ocean is responsible for deaths of marine animals.
 Non-biodegradable waste made up roughly one-third of the municipal solid waste produced in the
U.S. in 2009 (see References 1, page 6). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends
recycling whenever possible, and disposing of your trash at a combustion facility or in a landfill only
when recycling is not possible (see References 1, page 11). Hazardous waste should be handled
separately by your local sanitation department or by private companies that specialize in safe disposal
of toxins (see References 2).
 Recycling

 Separate glass, plastic and metal from other non-biodegradable waste for recycling. Many urban and
suburban areas have curbside recycling programs; if such a program is not available, take recyclable
materials to the nearest collection facility for processing. Recycling saves space in landfills and
reduces the amount of virgin materials that must be mined or manufactured to make new products,
saving energy and reducing global climate change in the process. (See References 3)
 Combustion

 Some non-biodegradable waste like used rubber tires and plastic can be burned at combustion
facilities. Most of these facilities use the heat generated by incineration to make energy in the form of
steam or electricity, which reduces their demand for other nonrenewable resources, including coal and
petroleum. In 2009, combustion facilities burned 3.1 million tons of solid waste, mostly used tires.
Combustion of municipal waste also reduces the volume of trash that ends up in landfills. (See
References 1, page 166)
 Landfills

 Landfills provide long-term storage for non-biodegradable waste. Ideally, landfills are carefully
situated to prevent contamination from entering surrounding soil and water, and managed to reduce
odor and pests as much as possible. (See References 4) Federal regulations require careful monitoring
in and around the site.
 Hazardous Waste Disposal

 Some products like motor oil, pesticides, batteries and paint are potentially hazardous to sanitation
workers and the general population as a whole. They are also more dangerous to the environment than
inert materials like plastic or rubber. Many communities offer special collection and disposal
programs to deal with household hazardous waste as safely as possible. In areas with no such
programs, it's legal to dispose of household hazardous waste in the trash. Follow any special disposal
instructions listed on the original container. Before doing so, however, contact the manufacturer or
retailer of the material you need to dispose of to ask if they accept old materials for reuse or recycling.

The concerns about the waste management are pretty much known to everyone. The organic
wastes like the food stuff, dead organisms, a host of other wastes get degraded with time. Hence,
these wastes do not possess a long-term threat regarding the accumulation of waste. However,
when it comes to the materials that do not get decomposed easily and at times can take millions of
years to degrade; the threat posed by them is a severe issue to be thought upon. Such wastes that
take many years to degrade are known as non-biodegradable wastes. The examples of such non-
biodegradable wastes are the polyethylene bags, the plastic materials, glass, metal, etc. So the
question that arises in the mind is that how to have a firm control over the accumulation of such
wastes?

The answer is clear. One can simply not abolish or abandon these materials as they are an integral
part of human existence, but one can surely cut down on its usage. By doing so, one can help the
cause of the Mother Nature. Here are the top ways to recycle and reduce the non-biodegradable
wastes in the most efficient manner:
Say No to plastic bags
Well, this could alternatively be stated as say yes to the cloth bags. This sounds like a rhetorical old
school methodology, but it is bamboozling to know that despite being such an effective measure to
control the production of non-biodegradable wastes, cloth bags are still not very much in use. People
still tend to ask for plastic or polythene bags when they go to the supermarkets. Isn’t that a shame to
be so adamant about using such bags? The idea of using cloth bags is to minimize the use of plastic
that is one of the non-biodegradable wastes. Reusable bags can be made out of canvas and thus be
brought into practice that can reduce the use of non-biodegradable wastes.

Packaging Woes
It is very common for an individual to buy new things that have flashy covering and packaging. Even
a small coffee can have a very attractive cover. But the important aspect here, which is often
overlooked by many, is that these packaging covers can end up being non-biodegradable wastes as
they are made up of plastics. Hence, the practical solution in such cases to reduce the piling up of
such non-biodegradable wastes is to reduce the packaging or have an alternate way of packaging.
Packaging can be done using paper after making a few changes to ensure that the product is
preserved in the right way. Moreover, people should be encouraged to buy in bulk instead of buying
things in retail. Buying in retail would directly mean buying more individual goods that would then
lead to more plastic being used resulting in accumulation of non-biodegradable wastes. An example
of the same could be when you are at the office or home, you can always consider buying reams of
paper packaged in paper and cardboard, not plastic as plastic is one of the non-biodegradable
wastes.

Bulk Buy
This is somewhat related to the previous point. When you buy things in retail, unknowingly you are
contributing a lot of non-biodegradable wastes to nature. So whenever you have to buy grains or any
other household good, you should always consider buying the things in bulk. Buying in bulk will also
help you save your precious time as you will not be required to visit the grocery stores again and
again. Also, shop at once all the daily utilities and make sure that you carry your reusable bags at
the malls or the supermarkets.

Having Reusable Containers

Another common issue is about the usage of aluminum foils or the plastic wraps. The go green
movement would strongly oppose the use of such wraps and foils. Thus, make sure that you own a
few reusable glass or plastic containers to maintain a good rapport with nature by contributing from
your end and minimizing the production of non-biodegradable wastes in an indirect way. Moreover,
instead of transferring food from serving dishes into foils and wraps when you plan to eat it in the
next day or two, you can rather place a plate over the top of the plate or bowl and then put it into the
refrigerator. This is very effective and very useful in the longer and total support of the cause of
nature.

Reuse Plastic Jars

What did you do to the last chocolate drink jar that you used? Probably you must have thrown it
away. Instead, one would recommend you to reuse those plastic jars. This would help you in storing
your food items, be it the dry items or wet items, and also assist the cause of nature as reusing
these jars would mean no disposal of plastic into nature that would result in less accumulation of the
non-biodegradable wastes. One of the leading websites has suggested various ways to keep these
jars clean so that you can use them efficiently. To remove odors from jars you plan on reusing, many
websites would acclaim washing them with hot water and white vinegar and leaving them overnight
with the mixture before rinsing it the next day.

Recharge the Old batteries

When it comes to the batteries, you should make sure that you do not end up buying new alkaline
batteries time and again. This will cause problems for you in many ways. Firstly, the cost of buying
the new batteries will add up to your bills, and then the other issue is with the degrading of these old
batteries once they are disposed of. These batteries are non-biodegradable wastes and hence you
should choose to reuse them time and again until it becomes highly mandatory for you to change
them. When alkaline or rechargeable batteries are completely used to the fullest of their potential,
you can recycle them through your local hazardous waste facility or any business firm that recycles
such alkaline batteries.
