Padded iPad case tutorial

Posted on March 31, 2011 by Melissa Mortenson

I broke down and got an iPad2 for me.. I wasnt sure I wanted one until I saw all of the great magaines you
can get on it now. I ha!e a bit of a "#a#er clutter$ #roblem and I thought this might cut it down a bit. I also
wanted to check out the new a##s for sketching to see if it would be a good "idea notebook$ and so far so
good% &if you are curious Im using the #enultimate a## and griffin stylus to sketch'.
I got the new swanky co!er from a##le &thats fold u#' but soon realied that I could not be trusted with
()*+ this co!er.. Im way to clumsy. I needed something #added. Plus I wanted a co!er that I could store
my stylus, head#hones and a few other things in.
Too small
If you follow me on facebook, you know that this is not the first case I made- I measured my iPad the first
time, made the co!er then realied that the iPad would ./+ 0I+-- *o now I am the #roud owner of a
o!ersied kindle case or a #added 1ewelry #ouch, whiche!er you want to think of it as.
*o back to the drawing board and I came u# with this one.
I added a i##er to the back, so I can stash my stuff in it, It actually works out 2uite well, as I ha!e been
#utting my phone in the i# #ouch too,
3nd 1ust a note4

*orry to add that, I kee# hearing about #eo#les stuff getting co#ied online a lot, It starting to worry me, but
thats a whole 5nother #ost- If you are a home sewer and wish to make these for sale, 1ust email me to
#urchase a license to do so.
+his will be my last #ost for (ourney month, 6ell take a break for a few days then Ill announce the theme
for 3#ril ne7t week-
+o start you will need fabric cut in the following sies4 &I used fabric from +ula Pinks Paris!ille line'
**edited to add:
I sincerely apologize but the first measurements I had listed for the case were off by an inch. I am
so sorry! Below are the corrected measurements
, 108 7 128 for front
, 108 7 128 for i##ered #ocket lining
, 108 7 128 for fla# lining
, 98 7 108 for i##er #anel
, 108 7 108 for i##er #anel
, 2, 98 7 108 for front fla# and 3:*/ ,1, ;8 7 108 for front fla# &you ha!e 3 #ieces total making u# the front
fla#'
, 108 7 128 #iece of <ecor =ond 0usible interfacing
>8 i##er
2 #ieces of auto liner 1?98 foam cut to 108 7 128 &you can buy this at @ancocks, its the stuff they line roofs
of cars with'
2 #ieces of Minke or *nuggles cut to 108 7 128
Misc. ribbons &at least 2 yards'
3ttach your i##er to your two i##er #anel #ieces along the 108 edge, the i##er will be a bit longer that is
ok. &a >8 i##er is actually almost 118 long' %. Aou are attaching one 108 side of each #iece to the i##er,
right sides together &use a i##er foot'.
It will look like this when you are done.
Press and to#stitch along each seam on the side of the i##er. 6ith i##er closed, trim #iece down to 108 7
128.
Place the wrong side of the i##ered #iece on to# of the right side of the #ocket lining #iece. baste.
But a #iece of ribbon to C8 fold in half and stitch to u##er left corner. But another #iece of ribbon about 128
long and stitch to the center of right side &make sure you get it in the center'.
*titch your i#ad case front #iece to your i##ered #iece &that you 1ust created' with right sides together.
*titch around 3 sides lea!ing the side with the ribbon loo# o#en. 3s you stitch around the corners stitch in
a cur!ed line. Bli# corners. *et aside.
Make a "sandwich$ with your auto liner foam and minke. Aou want the "non fabric$ side of your foam to
face out, with the wrong side of the minke facing the "fabric$ side of the foam. &If your foam doesnt ha!e
fabric on one side, dont worry'. *titch around 3 sides as you did for the case outside, also cur!ing at
corners. +his will ./+ be a fun ste#, but go slow and if ha!e a telfon foot it will hel# you greatly- +rim
seam allowances down to 1?98.
+urn right side out
0or the outside fla#4
*titch your 3 #ieces together as desired, then trim down to 108 7 128. &your #ieces are deliberately cut too
large, so that you can "offset$ the center #anel if you wish'.
3##ly 108 7 128 #iece of <ecor bond fusible interfacing to the wrong side.
I sewed 2 ribbons one 28 wide and one 18 wide to the center stri# of the fla#, 1ust too add some interest, if
you do this make sure you sew the smaller ribbon in the BD.+DE of the fla# so that it lines u# with the
other ribbon you #laced on the co!er.
But a 128 #iece of ribbon and stitch to the center of the fla#.
Place fla# outside and fla# lining right sides together, sew around 3 sides &lea!e the side with /)+ the
e7tra ribbon o#en'. Bur!e corners as you sew. +urn right side out and PED**.
*li# fla# into case with the EIF@+ side of the front of the fla# matching the EIF@+ side of the back of the
co!er. Matching raw edges. +he raw edge of the case back &the #art with the i##er' will be flush with the
raw edge of the fla# G =aste in #lace.
*li# your #added lining #iece into your co!er, right sides together, your #added #iece will be right side out
and your co!er will be wrong side out.
*titch raw edge of case, starting about 2 $ from center front, around to the back, then back around to the
front, lea!ing a 98 o#ening to turn case right side out.
+urn right side out.
Press well.
Machine stitch o#ening closed. &(ust turn it under and #ress it down and #in well and to# stitch to close the
seam.'
