I Installing a Built-In Organizer

A
built-in closet system ~ f f r s a finished, elegant
appearance. You can gIve modular melamine
closets the appearance of a built-in by adding trim,
but for a true built-in many people prefer the look of
natural wood.
This project uses finish-grade oak plywood and
a solid oak face frame to give the unit the look of
expensive, solid oak shelving-at a fraction of the cost.
The plywood panels are supported and strengthened
by an internal framework of 2 X 4 stud lumber.
When installing floor-to-ceiling shelves in a
corner, as shown here, add 1/2" plywood spacers to add
thickness to the studs that adjoin the wall. Spacers
ensure that face frame stiles of equal width can be
installed at both shelf ends (see diagram, opposite
page). Before proceeding, first determine how you will
design the built-in to fit into the corners (for walk-ins)
so you can plan each built-in section along each wall
accordingly (see page 50).
