DRUM
HANDLING
Keep the cable protected until it is used
Drum handling and storage guide
A C able is a valuable product. If handling is not done correctly, the drum and in turn the C able
w ound over it can be dam aged. A t tim es, dam age m ight not be discovered until after installation,
w hen repairs can be extrem ely difficult / expensive.
The purpose of this guide is to illustrate, how dam ages can
be avoided by correct handling and storage practices.
* Keep the drum upright
The drum is designed to be handled in upright position. It
m ay not sustain if lifted lying flat. W hen kept upright, the
cable layers w ill not get entangled. This w ould obviate problem s
during laying.
A lw ays store and m ove the drum in an upright position. In no case, the drum s be stored 'on the flat'
that is w ith flange horizontal.
* Roll in direction of arrows only
W hen the drum m ust be rolled for som e reason, alw ays roll
the drum in the direction of arrow . This w ay, the cable w ill
not unw ind or loosen on the drum .
H ow ever, this does not m ean that the drum can be rolled freely for any distance. Lim it rolling distance
to five m etres. If it is rolled beyond this lim it, the cable w ind w ill com e too tight and cut off the rope
holding the cable end. This m ay deform the cable and m ake it unfit for use.
O nce placed in position, use proper stoppers to prevent drum from rolling.
* Lif t the drum without damage
W hen lifting the drum , use a shaft through the centre of the
drum and a spreader beam .
If these are not available, lift w ith as long a rope as possible,
so that the sides of the drum are not dam aged. H ow ever,
m ake sure that the cable head is not pinched betw een rope
and drum .
Ensure that drum thus hoisted is w ell balanced. A lso, ensure that it is not touching other drum s.
Take care, not to give any im pact to the drum being low ered. In case a cable drum m ust be tem porarily
in a w aiting position, keep it hoisted. D o not repeatedly put it dow n.

* Handling with f ork lif t
The forks m ust be longer than the w idth of the
drum being lifted. Preferably, different w idths of
drum s should be m arked on the forks enabling
the operator to select the correct position for the
given drum size.
W hen m oving the drum , tilt the truck m ast so that
the drum rem ains in the fork and the points don't
touch the ground. Raise the forks of the forklift at least 6 to 8 inches above ground. Insufficient
clearance m ay cause the drum to be dragged on the ground and eventually dam aged or dropped
off the forks, especially if the ground surface is uneven.
D on't release the drum until the truck has stopped com pletely. D on't push the drum w ith the truck.
Leave sufficient room betw een drum s so that the fork doesnt dam age the drum .
* Nail with caution
Avoid punching nails into cable drum s. If nailing is utm ost necessary, m ake sure that they don't touch
the cable.
* Secure the drums f irmly
The round shaped cable drum rolls easily. It is in a very unstable
state because it's centre section is vacant and the w hole
w eight rests on it's peripheral section.
M ake sure that each drum is provided w ith stoppers to
prevent from rolling during storage.
It is preferable that large drum s should be lifted from the
base onto triangular or square w edges. The w edges should
be positioned by the flanges or the full w idth of drum .
* Avoid stacking
Stacking of drum s should be avoided.
* Fasten the drums f irmly
D uring transportation, the drum shall be fastened to the base through the centre hole or across the
flanges w ith w ires or ropes. To prevent m ovem ent of drum s, a com bination of w edges and transportation
support should be used and tied dow n front and rear.
* Don't drop drums
The drum s m ust not be dropped
from the vehicle. The drum is to
be lifted either by w inch or fork-lift.
W hen neither of this is available, a
m akeshift ram p w ith approxim ate
inclination of 1:4 should be
constructed. The cable drum should
then be rolled over this ram p by
m eans of ropes and w inches.
A dditionally, a sand bed at the foot
of the ram p m ay be m ade to brake
the rolling of cable drum .
M ake sure w hen unloading, the drum doesn't strike another drum .
* Storage f or longer periods
The site chosen for storage of cable drum s m ust be level and dry. It should have a firm , preferably
concreted surface. This w ill avoid sinking of the drum s and difficulty in subsequent shifting.
A ll drum s should be stored in such a m anner as to leave sufficient space betw een them for air
circulation.
D uring storage, the drum should be rolled to an angle of 90
o
once every three m onths. A lso, tie bolts
shall be checked and tightened at regular intervals.
A lw ays turn a cable drum using turn table. N ever use crow bar if turn table is not available. Tw o w ell
greased plates can be used instead.
Gulf Cable & Electrical Ind. Co.
3
Storage of cable drum s under shed is not essential unless the storage is for very long period. H ow ever,
the cable drum s shall be protected from direct sun light by covering them by tarpaulin or thick black
polyethylene sheet.
* Rewinding
W hen for any reason, it is necessary to rew ind a cable on to another drum , the barrel of the drum
should have a diam eter not less than that of the original drum .
It is utm ost im portant w hile rew inding to avoid dragging of the cable against drum flanges or sharp
edges.
Avoid pulling the cable across long unsupported spans. Provide freely rotating roller supports.
D o not pull a cable w ith pow ered vehicle.

XLPE Cables :
Electric pow er transm ission and distribution from source to the user can be placed into three categories
H igh tension netw orks : Beyond 33 kV
M edium tension netw orks : upto 33 kV
Low voltage netw orks : upto 1 kV
For over a century, im pregnated paper insulated cables held the sw ay in all the above categories.
Im pregnated paper has excellent electrical properties. M oreover, it has capacity to w ithstand a high
degree of therm al overload w ithout excessive deterioration. But it's hygroscopic nature requires the
provision of a m etal sheath to prevent m oisture contam ination.
There w as therefore a long felt need for pow er cable insulation m aterial w hich has a com bination
of non hygroscopic nature of therm oplastic m aterials, electrical properties of polyethylene and
operational advantages of im pregnated paper.
XLPE (cross linked polyethylene) has com e up as the dream m aterial. Since several decades now , it
has steadily replaced im pregnated paper.
W hat is XLPE ?
Low density polyethylene polym er is a com pound of carbon and hydrogen having linear m olecular
structure. These long chains being independent, slide w ith respect to one another, resulting therm oplastic
property of the m aterial.
Polyethylene
In cross linking process, these chains are random ly bonded to one another, thus converting the
independent m olecules to a three dim ensional linked netw ork. N ow , slippage betw een m olecular
chains is prevented and m aterial becom es therm osetting.

ACSR has long been the backbone of overhead transmission and distribution systems. It has altogether
replaced older types of overhead conductors made of copper, which are now a days used only to meet
specific demands.
ACSR offers optimal strength for line design. It consists of Aluminium Conductor stranded around a core
made of steel wires of high tensile strength. Variable steel core stranding enables desired strength to be
achieved without sacrificing ampacity. These conductor are bare , meaning that there is no insulation
or jacket covering the conductor.

In order to obviate steel oxidation (rusting) owing to weather, a coating of non-oxidizing grease is normally
applied to steel cores. One or more layers of aluminium wires can, if required, be supplied partially or fully
greased.
Conductor used in low voltage networks are all aluminium conductors (AAC).
The bare aluminium and ACSR conductors listed vide cataloge Bare conductors are suitable for installation
in all practical spans on transmission towers, ranging from long distance EHV transmission lines to sub-
service spans at distribution or utilization voltages.
The choice of conductor size, type and strength should take into account factors such as electrical load,
voltage regulation, corona losses, ice and wind loading, extreme temperatures and vibration. In case any
assistance is needed for evaluation of these factors as they apply to specific installations, please do not
hesitate to contact our marketing division.
Hard drawn Bare Copper conductors (HDBC), PVC covered hard drawn copper conductors (HDBC/PVC) are
used for special applications.
Soft Drawn Bare Copper conductors (SDBC) are used for earthing purposes.
