Thank you so very much to the families that have sent in snack for our class!

If you drop snack by the office please

continue to label it so I know the student that was responsible for the delivery :) If you have not sent snack in, please
send 5 days of snack for 24 kids to school with your child just as soon as you can. Snacks do NOT have to be
individually wrapped, but do be mindful of the quality of snack you are providing for the students. Snacks that have
really worked great in the past have been raisins, veggie straws/chips, goldfish, pretzels, real fruit snacks, crackers,
dried or fresh fruit, cheese sticks-etc.) We will do this again in January to re-stock the snacks after Christmas break.
Thank you so much!

Math
Please look at the Home Activity at the bottom of each daily math worksheet. Also, in the event
that your child comes home with a portion of their enVision worksheet circled in marker, please work
with them on that portion at home.
Reading
Beginning September 1st your child will bring home a clear plastic bag each night with 1 book in
it. It is important that you have your child read this book to you each evening. (even if they have
brought it home several times) This book should be at or around your childs independent reading
level. However, sometimes students choose the same text several times to bring home. In this instance
please focus on reading fluency and keep in mind we are working on establishing a love for reading
as well. Seeing them choose a book again and again can actually be a great thing. They will be
getting 2-3 new books for their book box each week. Inside the bag will be a log for recording your
nightly reading. It is your childs responsibility to return this AND the book that was sent home in it
EVERY day. On Friday if your child read every night at home, they will receive an additional 5 class
dojo points.
Thank you so much for your support in your childs education!

How does Mrs. Mitchell use Class Dojo?
Class Dojo is a fun way to engage students in our PBIS school wide
expectations and point system. Each day the students click their avatar to
take attendance. From that point on they will be earning points all day.
Both positive and negative. If at any time you are interested in seeing
your childs progress please log onto your dojo account and you can
view a detailed report on their daily and weekly progress.
Every Monday students have the choice to save or spend points
from the week prior. It is at this time that students can choose from the
PBIS reward chart, or choose to save their points for a future LARGER
purchase on the reward chart. Also, each Friday you child will be
bringing home printed dojo reports.
Enjoy having conversations with your child about what they are
choosing from the reward chart. How fun!!
How do I get to my child's Dojo reports?
It only takes a minute to create an account that you can check any
time online to view your child's reports. Please look for instructions on the
bottom of your child's printed class dojo behavior report. You will be
able to see WHERE and WHEN they are loosing their points on the Dojo
report. Please have conversations about the specific PBIS expectations
with your child in any areas they are struggling. (PBIS MATRIX ON BACK
OF NEWSLETTER AND AVAILABLE ON CLASSROOM WEBSITE)
Please take the time to praise your child for the great things they are
doing!! Thank you :)

Reading
The students have worked so hard this week practicing literacy
stations. I am so proud of them! This entire school year they will rotate
daily through all 4 daily literacy stations, and I will begin daily
guided reading lessons with each group. Again, just a reminder,
reading logs need to be signed each night.
Writing
Personal Narrative Stories
Students will be able to write stories with details, sequence and a
strong ending.
Conventions
Students will be able to write stories with using a capital and
lowercase letters correctly, punctuation marks, spaces between the
words and referencing the self help spelling chart to spell.
Self Help Spelling Chart
Say the word slowly.
Write what you hear first, next and last.
Think of the way the word looks.
Write the word in parts.
Think of another word with similar parts.
Use your practice page to try out different spellings.
Use classroom resources to help you.
Ask your teacher during a writing conference.
Author
This month we will be exploring the author David Shannon.
Part of the goal with the kiddos learning about authors is that
they will connect with them, and as a result love reading and
writing. David Shannons most famous books about a boy named
David were written when he was just 5! This is a great connection
for the kiddos!! One year he wrote back to my kindergarten class
when we sent him a GREAT BIG LETTER! I love this author, and so
do the kids!

PBIS Purpose
Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used
inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing,
modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student's
educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following
them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before
responding. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate
behavior is the norm. The above PBIS Matrix is the established norms for Cedar Ridge
Elementary. Please take time to read through this matrix and have conversations with your
child about these expectations and their ability and condence in following them. Again, to
view your childs progress please log onto Class Dojo and create your parent account. Thank
you!
