METHODOLOGY EXPLANATION
(his researh was onduted in order to understand the e8tent o% in%luene o% western
ulture in )ollywood mo#ies. 0n order to %ind the de!ree o% in%luene o% western ulture$ we did
researh in the internet to %ind out the real de%inition o% Western *ulture. As we %ound that$ there
does not e8ist an aurate de%inition %or western ulture$ we searhed %or the main om'onents o%
a ulture in the internet and based on these om'onents we as&ed the 'eo'le what western
ulture is$ by distributin! sur#eys amon! %i%ty students o% Aess Aademy whih had ;uestions
about eah o% those om'onents. (hen$ in the sur#ey those om'onents that were #oted by more
than %i%ty 'erent o% the #iewers as western$ were listed out and these om'onents were a!ain
listed based on their im'ortane in determinin! whether a %ilm is westerni+ed or not. (he %i%teen
haraters that were analy+ed in the sur#ey were <eans$ t6shirts$ minis&irts$ bi&inis$ s&inny
dresses$ slee#eless to's$ hi!h heeled %ootwear$ 'ointed heeled hal% shoes$ oat and suits$ boots %or
women$ boots %or men di#ore and se8 be%ore marria!e$ remi8 son!$ ballet danes$ -renh &isses$
Drin&in! brandy and whis&y$ %air s&inned ators and shootin! in Western ountries. (hese %i%teen
haraters were the haraters that are ommon to both "indi %ilms and /n!lish %ilms that we
wathed and it also inluded the dresses whih were ta!!ed western by the %amous western wear
store S'eners in its website.

minis&irts$ bi&inis$ s&inny dresses$ slee#eless to's$ hi!h heeled %ootwear$ oat and suits$ boots %or

We were on%used about the usa!e o% the abo#e obtained in%ormation %or determinin!
whether a mo#ie is westerni+ed or not. 0n order to sol#e this 'roblem$ we distributed another
sur#ey whih as&ed the #iewers the minimum riteria %or determinin! whether a mo#ie is
westerni+ed or not. (he sur#ey was onduted amon! thirty students as it was done in the
#oation and most students were out o% station. (hus based on the su!!estions o% the #iewer we
wathed %our mo#ies. (he mo#ies on the to' o% the list o% the blo& buster hit o% eah year %rom
200: to 2008 were seleted and those mo#ies whih were made on a s'eial theme li&e tradition
or ulture were omitted.

(he omission o% these mo#ies were done beause they annot be
onsidered as a normal "indi mo#ie as they are totally based on the li%estyle o% a 'artiular time
in the 'ast or on a 'artiular tradition and do not ontain a minor trae o% westerni+ation. (hose
%our mo#ies were No Entry, Dhoom-2, Welcome, and Race and the two mo#ies whih were
omitted %rom the list were .Jotha A&bar1 and .Mon!le 'ande1. (he mo#ies were seleted
randomly to a#oid bias. (he mo#ies whih were wathed be%ore$ with mediore audiene eyes
were now srutini+ed throu!h an analytial and ritial an!le. /ah mo#ie was wathed twie
and thorou!hly analy+ed based on the di%%erent riteria and it was %ound out how many o% the
mo#ies were westerni+ed.
Many di%%iulties aroused while arryin! out the researh. (he main di%%iulty was the
troubles %aed by the students in understandin! the sur#ey ;uestions. Most o% the students did not
e#en &now meanin! o% many o% the words that we ha#e as&ed in the sur#ey$ thou!h we ha#e tried
to ma&e it as sim'le as 'ossible. Most o% them were shy to as& the meanin! and mar&ed the
answers <ust randomly. We understood this by as&in! some o% the students the meanin! o% some
terms li&e bi&inis a%ter they ha#e returned ba& the sur#eys. So we ould not !et a hundred

'erent sinere res'onse %rom most o% the students. (he number o% %ilms we wathed was also
limited to ei!ht. As the researh is based on the o'inion o% <ust %i%ty students who are Asian and
li#e in the same buildin!$ there are hanes %or the result %or bein! biased. )ut a !reat ad#anta!e
o% sur#eyin! the Aess Aademy students was that ha#in! re'resentati#es %rom si8 di%%erent
ountries$ Aess Aademy an be seen as the miroosm o% South Asia.

the minimum riteria to ta! a mo#ie to showed that three o% the haretors were the minimum
neessity %or a mo#ie to ha#e western in%luene. We wathed %our mo#ies as a 'art o% our sur#ey.
(he mo#ies were No Entry, Dhoom-2, Welcome, and Race /#en the titles o% three mo#ies out o%
the mo#ies we wathed are in /n!lish. (his shows that se#enty %i#e 'erenta!e o% the "indi
mo#ies ha#e /n!lish titles.
(he mo#ie No Entry re'resents the li%e o% three 0ndians Aishan$ Brem and Sunny who are
%riends. Aishan has a onser#ati#e wi%e who always sus'ets her husband %or ha#in! another
a%%air. (he ladies wor&in! in AishanCs Dews'a'er o%%ie wear western dresses li&e minis&irts and
s&inny dresses and Aishen who is a %ully ommitted husband$ admonishes them %or bein! so
re#ealin!$ as he is a%raid o% his wi%e. Brem on the other hand is a man who has se#eral a%%airs
with di%%erent women. )ut he 'retends to be a %aith%ul husband in %ront o% his wi%e$ and thus
heats u' on his wi%e$ who re'oses om'lete trust on him. Sunny is the 'hoto!ra'her %or
AishanCs news'a'er 'ress$ and he is li&e AishanCs brother and he is ready to do whate#er Aishan
as&s him to do. Sunny marries a modern !irl in the story who too wears the so alled western
dresses as %ound in the sur#ey. SunnyCs marria!e was a lo#e marria!e. /8e't AishanCs and
BremCs wi%e$ all the %emale haretors wear the dresses su!!ested to be western by the AEW

'olie. (he 'olie ins'etor a''oints a %emale thie% %or train! him and she sueeds to allure
him with her beauty. (hou!h she sueeds in doin! so$ she %inally %alls in lo#e with him and both
o% them deides to !et married. 0n the story the heroine wears short and s&inny dresses and they
use /n!lish dialo!ues too o%ten. (here are 'arts in the story where the on#ersations are totally in
/n!lish %or a %ew minutes. A totally western style dinner is arran!ed by the hero %or the heroine.
(he mo#ie too has se#eral hit remi8 son!s.
(he mo#ie Welcome shows an under!round &in! named Eday who lo#es his one and only
sister San<ana so muh and is in searh o% a !ood !room %or her. Due to the riminal ba&!round
o% her brother$ no one is ready to marry her. (he heroine San<ana wears minis&irts bi&inis and all
other dresses labeled western in the sur#ey. San<ana %all in lo#e with a !uy named Fa<i# and both
o% them to!ether tries to brin! her brother to the ri!ht 'ath.
(he mo#ie Race is totally shot abroad and it has an o#erwhelmin! use o% /n!lish
dialo!ue in most o% the senes. Fae also shows se8 be%ore marria!e between the hero and
heroine. 0n the Fae mo#ie the main %emale stars wear dresses that are western in the list. (he
mo#ie is also notably western %or ha#in! /n!lish lyris in all o% its nine son!s. (he mo#ie
re'resents the li%e o% two brothers Fan#ir Sin!h and Fa<i# Sin!h who are e8eedin!ly rih %rom

aessibility and 'o'ularity as the ountry itsel% has assimilated into the ourse o% 5lobali+ation.
5lobali+ation has widened the audiene s'etrum and has made it aessible to #iewers all o#er
the world beyond the on#entional South Asian audiene.
