What is Idle Free Schools?
Idle Free Schools is a collaboration between
Washoe County Health District AQMD,
Alliance for Climate Education (ACE),
GREENevada and Washoe County School
District, whose goal is to reduce car and
bus idling at Washoe County schools.
Why be Idle Free?
Health: Engine idling creates air pollution, which is especially bad for
kids. Kids lungs are still developing and they breathe faster than adults.
Breathing air pollution can aggravate asthma and even cause cancer.
Environment: Idling emits CO
2
, the greenhouse gas responsible for
climate change. Climate change means more heat waves, droughts,
wildfires and smaller snowpack for Nevada, affecting the health, drinking
water and economy for all Nevadans.
Money: Idling your engine increases car maintenance, wastes gas and
burns a hole in your pocket! By installing GPS trackers, WCSD has
already reduced idling time in its buses. You can, too!
