CONCEPTS FOR PIPE RACK SELECTION: -

The pipe racks are generally of two types Single tier and double tier.
Generally we provide single tier pipe racks, means our process lines and utility lines at
same level. But sometimes we provide double tier pipe racks due to following reasons-
i. hen client demands.
ii. To avoid heat transfer between the pipes.
iii. hen length of pipe rack e!ceeds "m #by hard and fast rule$.
%f we are going for double tier pipe rack, then we will provide utility lines at top and
process lines at lower level because of chemicals and acids in process lines. %f there
would be any leakage it may a&ect our utility lines. So, to avoid any damage to our
utility lines we will provide utility lines at upper level and process lines at lower level.
What are utility lines? 'tility lines are those lines in which our materials like steam, water
etc. which helps in the process industry to prepare the product, (ows. These are mainly
the input lines for process industry.

+fter deciding the location of the pipes, ne!t step is to decide the spacing between the
pipes and position of the pipes. )osition of the pies depends upon two factors-
i. eight consideration
ii. Temperature consideration
%f we consider the weight, the heavy pipes should be placed at the edges and lighter
pipes at middle. This is from structure point of view. The load will get easily
transferred to the columns.
'nder temperature consideration, we never keep the pipes together having
materials of too much di&erent temperature, to avoid heat transfer between the
materials.
+fter deciding the location and position of the pipes ne!t step is to decide the spacing
between the pipes. There are few steps to calculate the spacing between the pipes-
