a) This specification covers the Design, Engineering, manufacture, testing, supply on CIP
basis, transportation to site, insurance, storage, testing and commissioning of 202!

5.0 GENERAL DESIGN OF TRANSFORMER1 -
!)% The transformer and accessories shall be so designed as to facilitate inspection, cleaning and
repairs) The re+uirement of Indian Electricity <ules shall be 'ept in vie()
!)2 The design shall ensure satisfactory operation under severe (or'ing conditions due to
fluctuating load of steel furnaces and voltage variations in the system including those, due to
short circuits) The transformers shall be designed as to minimiBe the ris' of accidental short
circuits caused by animals, birds or vermins)
The design shall incorporate every reasonable precaution and provision for the safety of all
those concerned in the operation and maintenance of the e+uipment 'eeping in the vie( the
re+uirement of Indian Electricity ,oard)
!)& $ll material used shall be of the best +uality and of class most suitable for (or'ing under
specified conditions and shall (ithstand the atmospheric conditions and temperature variations

The proper 8 complete tightening of the nuts of the coil clamping bolts must be ensured by the
manufacturers) The tightening of the nuts to the designed value and that the nuts of all the coils
clamping bolts are tightened to same e*tent, should be carried out (ith tor+ue spanners)
The devices used for loc'ing the nuts of coil clamping bolts must be of such a +uality and such
care should be ta'en first in tightening the nuts and ne*t in loc'ing them in position that the
arrangement does not (or' loose due to vibrations caused by short circuits and fluctuating
loads etc)
!)%4 The noise level shall not be more than !db above 2E"$ standard publication T<1%)
!)%5 The transformers shall be designed to have short circuit rating of t(o seconds as per I--12026)
6.0 INSULATING OIL1-
-ufficient insulating oil of 2apthenic type =made from 2aphthenic crude) in (hich paraffinic
content should be less than !0> and aromatic content 3 to %2> conforming to ,-0 %34IEC0256
class1% shall be supplied for first filling of each transformer) Particular attention shall be paid to
deliver the oil at site free from moisture and of uniform +uality through out in non1returnable
steels drums) The +uantity of oil for first filling of each transformer shall be stated in tender
along1(ith trade mar' of the oil to be supplied) Gse of inhibitors in oil shall not be resorted to)
%0> e*tra oil of the total +uantity of oil shall be supplied along (ith the transformer)
7.0 LIMIT OF TEMPERATURE RISE1-
7)% ?ith the above climatic conditions given in clause1& each transformer shall be capable of
operating continuously on any tap at their normal rating (ithout e*ceeding the follo(ing
temperature rises

7)2 The limits of temperature rise mentioned above (ill have to be satisfied by the manufacturer by
carrying out the heat run test at the lo(est negative tap) This test shall be carried out by feeding

7.3 OVERLOAD CAPACITY / CONTINOUS RATING
The safe overload capacity of the transformer and the duration of overload under ma*imum
temperature conditions (ithout any damage to the (inding or harmful effects on the insulation
shall be clearly stated in the tender (hich must be asper IEC1&!3I-6600,guide for loading of oil
immersed transformer)
2.0 IMPEDANCE
The transformer shall have %0> impedance on 2! "#$ base respectively (ith tolerance as per
I-02026Part1I=%54&)) Impedance shall include positive and Bero se+uence and shall be
e*pressed in terms of the branches of star connected e+uivalent diagram, all on the same '#$
base and range shall be given for each branch of the e+uivalent circuit in turn)
7.0 FRE8UENCY1-
The transformer shall be suitable for continuous operation (ith a C!> fre+uency variation from
a normal of !0 AH (ithout e*ceeding the temperature rise as specified in clause17)% above)

Core material shall be directly procured either from the manufacturer or through their
accredited mar'eting organisation of repute and not through any agent)

(ith a ba'ed enamel insulation coating) The insulation shall be inert to the action of hot
transformer oil and shall be perfectly adhesive) Paper and varnish insulation shall not be

%0)! The core shall be rigidly clamped andor bolted to ensure ade+uate mechanical strength and to
prevent vibrations during operation) The bolts used in the assembly of the core shall be suitably

that the laminations are flat and that finally assembled core is free from distortions)

poc'ets (hich (ould prevent complete emptying of the tan' through the drain valve or cause
trapping of air during filling)

shall be provided) The purchaser shall inspecttest the core material for various tests as per
relevant IECI- to ensure +uality) Core may also be inspected during horiBontal assembly,

i) The above flu* density has been specified to meet (ith the over flu*ing of the core due to
temporary over voltage of the order of &%> for l min, 33>for ! sec) that may appear
abnormal conditions such as those follo(ing sudden loss of large loads)
ii) Do'e bolt area and flitch plate areas shall not be counted in the net core area if these are
provided for fastening core)

. SUPPRESSION OF HARMONICS1
The transformer shall be so designed as to suppress the harmonics voltage specially the &rd 8
!th, to eliminate (ave form distortion and interference (ith communication circuits due to high
fre+uency disturbances) @imiting percentage of harmonics at normal voltage and at ma*imum
system voltage shall be stated in the tender)
2. 6INDINGS1-
%2)% The %&2'# (indings shall have graded insulation (hereas all other (indings shall be fully
insulated and the neutral points shall be insulated as amended in I-02026)
%2)2 The transformers shall be capable of operation (ithout danger on any particular tapping at the
rated '#$ (hen the voltage may vary by C%0> of the voltage corresponding to the tapping)
%2)& The (indings and connections, insulation material shall not soften, ooBe out, shrin' or collapse
during service)
%2)32o strip conductor (ound on edge shall have a (idth e*ceeding si* times its thic'ness) The
conductors shall be transposed at sufficient intervals to minimiBe eddy currents and e+ualiBe the
current and temperature distribution along the (indings)
%2)! The (indings and connections shall be properly braBed to (ithstand shoc's during
transportation or transient conditions during service)
%2)6 The ade+uate pre1shrin'age of the coil assembly using pre1compressed press board material
having lo( moisture content for the radial spacer bloc's shall be ensured by the manufacturers
so that there is no displacement of the radial spacer bloc's due to fre+uent short circuits on the
transformers)
%2)7 $ll (indings after being (ound and all fibrous hygroscopic materials used in the construction of
the transformer shall be dried under vacuum and impregnated (ith hot oil)
In addition to this the drying process be sufficiently e*tended for proper stabiliBation of the coil

%2)4 The coil clamping rings (herever used, shall preferably be of flat insulated steel laminations)

soften (hile in contact (ith oil or fray out into fibers or edges) The slots should be so
dimensioned that the bloc's (ill not come out of the slots)
Gniform distribution of coil clamping force shall be designed by using an ade+uately large
number of coil clamping bolts and by transferring the clamping force from clamping bolts to the
clamping plates through intermediate members (hich can spread the clamping force over a
large area.
%2)%% $ll .oints shall be braBedcrimped considering the vibrations due to short circuits and load
fluctuations)

3. CURRENT DENSITY1
The purchaser shall be at liberty to inspect built1up (inding for its +uality, (eight of copper,
insulation and overall (eight of coil assembly) The siBe of conductor used for different (indings
shall also be chec'ed during stage inspection to chec' the current density) The transformer shall
be so designed that the current density of all the (indings and the regulating (inding at the
lo(est tap should not $0*$$: 250 A/*@.SA)
4. TAN= CONSTRUCTION1-
%3)%)% The tan' shall be fabricated of a suitable grade steel and strong enough to allo( the lifting of
complete transformer (ith oil by means of a crane or .ac's and transported to site (ithout
over1straining the .oints etc)
%3)%)2 The main tan' body shall be capable of (ithstanding a vacuum of %00)63 F2m

4.2 TAN= COVER

4.3 CONSERVATOR TAN=, OIL GAUGE AND BREATHER

provided in such a position as not to obstruct the electrical connections to the transformer)

4.4 VALVES1
%3)3)% The transformers shall be provided (ith 2 2o) filter valve each of !0 mm siBe one mounted
close to the top of the main tan' 8 the other close to bottom of the tan' oil circulation and one
drain valve of 40mm siBe (ith plug) The conservator shall have drain plug of 2!mm siBe)
%3)3)2 T(o robust sampling valves (ith spouts suitable for ta'ing samples of top, and bottom oil) The
top sampling valves shall be brought do(n by internal pipe connections) -uitable name plates
