Groundwater Hydrology

CWR 4120/5125
Fall 2014
Dr. C. Clark II, Instructor
Homework Assignment #1 Due: Thursday 9/11/2014

1. Find the most recent groundwater levels for a location in the following counties:

Group 1 Leon/Dade Group 6 Glades/Bay
Group 2 Orange/Brevard Group 7 Duval/Dixie
Group 3 Hillsborough/Alachua Group 8 Suwanee/Volusia
Group 4 Lake/Escambia Group 9 Broward/Marion
Group 5 Citrus/Wakulla

After providing the groundwater levels, name location, how many monitoring locations are located in that
county, monitoring agency, and headquarters for that agency. Discuss why the levels are where they are
and provide validation for your reasoning.

2. Suppose you have a 5-gal bucket full of dry sandy material. You add just enough water until the sand
becomes saturated at the 5-gal mark. Assume that it takes exactly 1 gal to fill all of the pores. Then, a
hole was drilled into the bottom of the bucket and the water allowed to drain into a container until it
stopped at a volume of 0.9 gal.

Calculate the porosity, specific yield, and specific retention for this scenario.

3. A core of sandy materials of approximately 80 cm
3
was taken from the field and weighed. The net soil
material was 166 g (wet weight). After placing the sample in the oven at 105C for several hours, the dry
sample weighed 148 g (dry weight). Calculate the dry bulk density and the porosity of the soil tested.
Based on your porosity for the sandy soil what is the most likely specific yield and specific retention of
this sand.

4. Suppose Problem 3 was conducted with a clay and the dry weight was 106 g. Calculate the dry bulk
density, porosity, the most likely specific yield, and the specific retention values for this clay utilizing the
same analysis.
