Name: Ashauna Solomon

Observation: The amount of water retained by soil samples collected from different areas
on St.Maarten.

Hypothesis: Soils from different areas on St.Maarten retain similar amount of water.

Aim: To determine if soils from different areas on St.Maarten retain similar amount of
water.

Material/Apparatus:

1. Soil auger
2. Distilled water
3. Oven
4. Measuring cylinder
5. Container
6. Plastic bags
7. Analytical Balance
8. Paper

Method/Procedure:

1. Identify the areas on St.Maarten that will be used to collect soil samples.

2. Prepare a table with the results as shown below.

Soil Sample ID Dry Weight (g) Wet Weight (g) Container+ Wet Weight (g) Water Holding Capacity (%)

3. Use a soil auger to collect samples of 15cm in depth.

4. Label each soil sample numbers 1-6.

5. Dry the samples in and oven at a temperature of 105°C for 24 hours.

6. Record the weight of every dry soil sample.

7. Wet each soil sample with a measured amount of distilled water, until the soil is

saturated.

8. Let the samples drain for 30 minutes then weigh each wet soil sample.

9. Place each wet soil sample into a container and weight them together.

10. Let the soil samples in the container drain for 24 hours and weight them again.

11. Calculate the water holding capacity of each soil sample.

12. Analyze the data, to determine if there are significant differences in water holding

capacity among the areas.

Precaution: The water was correctly measured.

The equipment used were clean.

The weight was accurately recorded.

Variables: Controlled variables: Time in the oven, amount of water, number of samples

Manipulated variable: Weight of the samples

Responding variable: The water holding capacity

Expected results: The soil samples from different areas on St.Maarten will retain a similar
amount of water because they have similar percentages of water holding capacities.
