Name: Ashauna Solomon

Observation: Two students were arguing over which surface is a better obsorber
of radiation given off by the sun. One student remarked that shiny
surfaces absorb radiation better than a can sprayed with black matt
paint. The other student said the opposite is true.

Hypothesis: A black surface will absorb more radiation from the sun than a shinny
surface.

Aim: To observe whether a black or shiny surface absorbs more radiation from the sun.

Material/Apparatus:

1. Cans
2. Spray
3. Paint
4. Thermometer
5. Stopwatch
6. Water

Matt black

3. Spray one can black matt.

4. Measure 110mls of water in both cans.

5. Cover the surfaces with foil paper and insert the thermometer through the foil

paper.

6. Record the temperature of the water.

7. Leave the cans in the sun for one 1 hour.

8. Record the temperature of the water.

9. Use the results to fill out the prepared table.

Precautions:
The water was not spilled

Variables: Controlled variables: Time, Amount of water in each can

Manipulated variables: Foil paper, Colors of the cans

Responding variable: Temperature of the cans

Expected results: The black surface will have a higher temperature than the shiny surface

after 1 hour because it absorbed more radiation from the sun.
