Welcome to
Kindergarten!

I am so excited to be on this journey with your family as
Kindergarten has begun at Caroline Robins. It is going to be a
fantastic year, as you will see your child grow by leaps and
bounds! I look forward to the journey ahead!

Language Arts
Your child will be exposed to a variety of literacy rich activities
designed around the philosophy of Reggio Emilia. Through
discovery based learning, inquiry, and collaborative group work,
we will work through learning letters and letter sounds. As well,
writing will be introduced through family stories in order to bring
knowledge into the classroom curriculum. Through the Daily 5, we
will be working on learning to read to self and read to someone by
choosing books that are at your childs reading level.
Math
Your child will be learning about the numbers 1-5 and the
different ways to arrange sets of five objects. Look for everyday
opportunities to estimate and count objects together. For
example, How many apples do you think are in the grocery bag?
Lets count to check. Or How many socks do you think are in the
laundry basket? Do you think we have more socks or more shirts?
Lets count and check. You might also want to read to your child
some books that relate to numbers. Consider counting pictures on
a page to find out how many, or asking your child to predict how
many will be shown on the next page.

Science
Through the use of invitations, science objectives will be met in a
way that will allow me to follow the personal interests of the
children and their own inquiries. Invitations consist of materials
arranged in a way that grab the interest of the children. From this
initial curiosity, wonderings and questions are formed, which turn
into projects to display learning. We are beginning with animals in
the local environment through an invitation that asks the question,
Whose nest is this?
Social Studies
Through self-portraits we will begin our inquiry into
understanding similarities and differences amoung individuals.
Through family stories we will be looking at cultural diversity
amoung our families and classroom community. In order to help us
with our inquiry, please send a family picture (1-2) of a family
tradition (camping, cooking, cultural traditions, etc.) that the
children can use to start the beginning stage of writing by

Health
We will be working on creating and establishing classroom and
school expectations. The children will be involved in this process by
writing and naming the expectations that they believe to be
important in our classroom and school community.
