Stereotypical Audience Profile

The short film which I am producing is of the sci-fi/futuristic genre. The audience who enjoy this
genre have many stereotypes associated with them, sometimes being deemed as a nerd or geek,
although this doesnt mean that this is my audience, as my short film differs from that of the typical
sci-fi genre. Stereotypes are usually invalid, however, as audiences have evolved over the years, with
the sci-fi genre beginning to appeal to a younger and more diverse audience.
Age:
Sci-fi audiences are usually stereotyped as being aged from around 20 40 years old, when the film
is aimed at a younger audience. This stereotypes the audience as being immature, not acting the age
that they are. My target audience is males aged 13 17, so doesnt fall under this age range, but
may appeal to them also. Over the years, sci-fi film has begun to change, and therefore appeal to a
younger demographic. Previously, sci-fi films were mainly set in futuristic settings, such as space or
other planets, but over the years, films have begun to take place in modern settings with sci-fi
elements present, which is what my short film falls under. This helps the film appeal to a wider
audience, as they can relate to the environment in which the film is set.
Gender:
Male is the gender that is stereotypically associated with the sci-fi genre. Males in general are
stereotypically interested in films involving action, violence etc., whereas females are stereotypically
seen as being interested in films involving romance. Although my target audience is males, both
genders may also find appeal in my short film, due to the fact that my audience research involved
both genders, in which I will take into account all of their opinions and responses. However, the sci-fi
gender audience is becoming a lot more diverse, with both males and females taking an interest.
This could be due to the changing nature of sci-fi films, which incorporate elements to appeal to
both genders e.g. some sci-fi incorporate romance as well as action.
Hobbies and Interests:
The sci-fi audience have different stereotypical hobbies and interests. A stereotypical sci-fi audience
member is interested in comic books, usually ones revolving around superheroes, sometimes
enjoying films tied in with these comics. My audience is quite broad, however, so my audience may
not have this hobby. The audience are stereotypically also interested in activities like role playing,
which they dress up and act like the character, usually a character from a sci-fi film. This has become
a more diverse hobby over the years though, as people who do not enjoy the sci-fi genre also dress
up as their favourite characters, sometimes attending conventions. Another stereotypical hobby and
interest is playing board and card games which are connected to fantasy. Nevertheless, sci-fi films
have become more diverse in who they appeal to, with many people who do not have any interest in
these hobbies and interests still enjoying the sci-fi genre.
