SMASH CUT TO:

INT. TRAILER - BEDROOM - NIGHT

Mason and Frances are in bed having sex.
LATER
Mason lies on his back looking up at us. Frances sleeps by
his side.
We slowly move in on him. Hes far away; lost in thought.
He looks down and notices a SPOT OF BLOOD on the back of his
hand. He contemplates it.
EXT. MASONS TRAILER - MORNING
Mason exits his trailer and walks next door and up the porch
to...
JESSES FRONT PORCH
Mason KNOCKS. Jesse opens the door a few moments later.
MASON
Sup. You seen Danny? Were gonna be
late.
JESSE
(Incredulous)
Wha--"SUP"?! What the hell do you
mean "sup"?
MASON
Whats wrong with you?
JESSE
Whats wrong with me? Whats wrong
with you?! We--(Looks around,
whispers) We fucking killed a man
last night, and now youre all
fucking nonchalant about it. I
mean--what, what is that? I havent
slept all night!
MASON
Yeah well, I wasnt exactly
sleeping like a baby either. Look,

MASON (contd)
you know as well as I do that none
of the cameras in that store
worked, we just gotta lay low,
well be fine.
JESSE
You think the clerks just gonna
keep his trap shut?
MASON
Like I said, we dont exactly stand
out in a crowd. And thats not the
first robbery in Malick, Im sure
he just wants to get it over with.
JESSE
But it wasnt just a robbery, was
it? Jesus Christ, Mason, I swear to
god youre some kind of fucking
psychopath. Do you even care what
we did to that guy? Cold blood man,
cold fucking blood! And youre just
gonna, what, go to work like
nothing happened?
MASON
(Temper rising)
Listen, Im the farthest thing from
nonchalant! You know how much money
we got last night? Three hundred
dollars. We killed a man for three
hundred dollars, and yes, I feel
fucking awful about it, are you
happy? But theres nothing I can do
about it. And my share of three
hundred dollars isnt gonna feed my
family. So yeah, Im just gonna go
to work like nothing happened, and
Im gonna put food on the table.
JESSE
Well we cant all be as resilient
as you.
He closes the door in Masons face.
3.
EXT. LEONS TRAILER - MORNING
Mason stands on Leons rundown front porch. He KNOCKS.
Waits.
MASON
(Calling)
Leon! Its me, open the door!
He KNOCKS again. He waits a moment, then shakes his head and
turns to leave. Just as he turns, the door opens. Danny
stands in the frame.
MASON (contd)
Danny? What are you doing here?
Wheres Leon?
DANNY
Inside.
MASON
Is he...you know, going to work?
DANNY
I dont know.
MASON
This why you didnt come home last
night? What were you doing here?
DANNY
Making sure Leon was okay. Hes
pretty messed up, and you guys just
took off and left him alone.
MASON
What are you, his wife? Leons a
big boy. He can take care of
himself. Come on, were gonna be
late.
DANNY
I dont think Im--
MASON
Danny, just get in the car, I dont
have time for this.
DANNY
Fuck you. (Beat)Did dad ask where I
was?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 4.
MASON
Did you expect him to?
DANNY
(Beat)
Gimme a minute.
He turns to go back inside.
EXT. FACTORY - MORNING
A large, looming steel factory. Gray, urban and depressing.
The overcast sky reflects the bleak factory exterior.
Masons Impala pulls up and parks amongst the rows of cheap
cars.
INT. IMPALA - CONTINUOUS
Mason turns off the engine and turns to Danny, who is
sitting beside him.
MASON
Danny, about what happened...you
okay?
DANNY
Huh. Where was this last night?
MASON
Im sorry. I needed to see Allie.
DANNY
Im fine. (Opens door) Thanks for
asking.
Danny gets out of the car.
INT. FACTORY - DAY
WORKERS mill about around ASSEMBLY LINES. Metal SPARKS, vats
of molten steel bubble. A CATWALK suspended over the floor
runs the length of the factory.
On the catwalk is a fat, middle-aged SUPERVISOR.
SUPERVISOR
(Announcing)
GENTLEMAN! GENTLEMAN, LISTEN UP!
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 5.
BEEEEEEEEP! The machinery stops. The workers quiet down and
turn their attention to the catwalk.
SUPERVISOR (CONT)
Listen up. I have some bad news.
Due to some...unforeseeable
circumstances, starting next week,
we will be starting layoffs.
BOOING and JEERING from the men.
We focus on Mason, who finds Danny in the crowd. They both
look nervous.
EXT. FACTORY - NIGHT
A fatigued Mason and Danny walk out of the graffiti covered
doors of the factory, along with a swarm of other men.
PARKING LOT
The pair are headed to Masons car, when we hear the RINGING
of Masons cell phone. He answers it.
MASON
(Into phone)
Hello?
JESSE
(On phone)
Hey man. We need to meet.
MASON
(Into phone)
You couldnt wait until I got home?
JESSE
(On phone)
No, no. Not there. Just the two of
us. Meet me at that diner off the
highway. Ive got an opportunity.
CLICK.
Mason looks exasperated.
DANNY
Who was that?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 6.
MASON
No one.
INT. DINER - NIGHT
A quiet diner. Red vinyl booths, a long dirty counter.
Run-of-the-mill, nothing special.
The door swings open and Mason walks in. He looks around and
sees Jesse sitting hunched over in a booth. He walks over to
him and sits down. Two STEAMING cups sit on the table.
JESSE
You made it.
MASON
You made it sound pretty fuckin
urgent. Whats up?
JESSE
Opportunity, thats what. Its
knocking, man.
MASON
Oh, well if I knew he was coming I
would have cleaned up more.
He sips from his mug.
MASON (CONTD)
What is this anyway?
JESSE
Pumpkin latte.
MASON
What the fuck is that?
JESSE
It doesnt matter whats in the
damn mug, alright? This is serious.
MASON
Okay, okay. Whats this
opportunity?
JESSE
What happened last night cant
happen again, agreed?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 7.
MASON
Yeah. Agreed.
JESSE
I dont know about you, but Im
done robbing liquor stores.
MASON
What do you suggest then? Selling
insurance?
JESSE
Thats what I wanted to tell you. I
got in touch with a guy who I think
might be able to solve our
problems.
MASON
What do you mean?
JESSE
Hes got a job for us. Easy one.
One thatll net us all a lot of
cash.
MASON
Whats the job?
JESSE
I dont know.
MASON
Whos the guy?
JESSE
I dont know.
MASON
Youre not a great pitch man,
Jesse. Where did you even meet this
guy? Or whoever hes using to set
up meetings? Why does he think
youd be so good for this job?
JESSE
Just trust me, man. He wants us to
meet him at the warehouse complex
outside of town. Come with me,
well find out what it is we need
to do.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (3) 8.
MASON
So you want me to come with you to
an abandoned warehouse to meet a
criminal you dont know so that he
can supposedly make us a lot of
money for very little effort.
Jesse is silent.
MASON (contd)
Yeah, fuck you.
JESSE
Mas--
MASON
And why just me? What about Danny
and Leon?
JESSE
I figured you wouldnt wanna bring
Danny until we knew what was up.
MASON
And Leon?
JESSE
(Beat)
...Hes dangerous, man. I dont
trust him, hes fucking crazy.
MASON
Look, I dont like what Leon did
anymore than you do, but Ive known
him for twenty years. I trust him.
I gotta get going. Dont do this.
Youre going to get yourself
killed.
JESSE
I heard about the layoffs at the
plant. What are we supposed to do
now?
MASON
I dont know. But not this.
9.
EXT. MASONS TRAILER - NIGHT
Mason stands outside his fathers trailer, seemingly
preparing. He exhales and goes inside.
INT. MASONS TRAILER - CONT
Mason enters. His father George is again sitting in front of
the TV. Mason sits down next to him.
MASON
Dad? Can I talk to you?
GEORGE
(Drunk)
What?
MASON
Listen, you know I wouldnt ask
unless I was really desperate. I
need some money. The plant is doing
layoffs and I dont know where the
hell Im gonna find another job.
GEORGE
Oh, I get it. Im a fucking bank
now.
MASON
No, dad--
GEORGE
Yeah, I let you live here, I let
you eat my food, now you want my
fucking money too? You fucking bum.
He swigs his beer.
INT. MASONS BEDROOM - NIGHT
Bare bones. A bed next to a dresser. Bare walls.
Mason holds his cellphone. He seems to be struggling weather
or not he should open it. Finally he does, and dials. It
RINGS three times.
JESSE
(On phone)
Hello?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 10.
MASON
(Into phone)
Lets do it.
EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
An old, rundown, sprawling warehouse on the edge of the
docks.
We see Masons car parked a ways away, with Mason and Jesse
inside, scoping the place out.
MASON
You sure you wanna do this?
JESSE
What choice do we have? We know
nothing about this and its still
our best option.
MASON
Who told you about this? I think I
deserve to know by now.
JESSE
I was drinking this morning.
MASON
Always a good way to start
business.
JESSE
I was drinking this morning at
Macks, and some guy who called
himself Mr. Torrance came up to me.
He said he knew of me and what I
did, and that I should come by.
MASON
Wait, what? These guys have been
watching us? Christ. What do they
even want with us? Were nothing
special.
JESSE
I guess well find out.
