Why Me

I was sitting in the rear of the Volkswagen Golf as we glided up and down the country roads of
Holland, passing farm after farm. The blur of the other cars and the farm and slurred in my
vision like a that moment when the world stops for a split second while you make a decision.
Time passed slowly as the the hours rolled into one another.

Once the car pulled up to the drive way of the vacation house in the country we were staying at
I awoke from the dull state I was in. I consulted my friends Hugo and Laura that we were
there. Hugo was a average hight man who always walked with a slight stooge in his knees, and
Laura was a red head with large green brown eyes that glowed. I sat up and groaned as my
cramped legs stretched out of the tiny car. We all high ves for making the long journey. Hugo
and I unhooked the three bikes from the top of the car. While Laura took the guitars out of
the boot. We found the key under the door mat of course. As we entered the bright wood and
well light house with beautify oak oors there was a sense of excitement and utter joy. In that
moment my phone started ringing I answered to nd it was the landlord who was asking if we
made it there to which I replied yes and thanked her for calling. There was some muttering and
static then she hung up. To which I ignored. Then Hugo called me over to get me to help him
with the last of the bags out of the surprisingly large boot the car. I thought to my self if only
they made the leg room slightly more spacious.

After we had unpacked all the bags we waited for the arrival of our other members of our
group to join us. We had lost sight of them on the motor way. Yet they were the ones who were
suppose to have known where they were going. I though James was a little arrogant about his
navigational skills. We waited, chatted, complained, bored. Till nally we all plunked down on
the couch to watch a movie. It was getting dark so we decided to go out down the driveway to
see if there were in sight down the road. They were not picking up there phone. There was the
three of them James, Julia, and Johnathan. We started to get anxious about where they had
gone or what happened. We decided to hop back in the Volk and search for them. I loved
driving in the dark. The few distractions of the passing cars and the long strolling of the
passing lights.

We stopped at a gas station to grab some chow. As James car had all the food for the 5 week
holiday we had planned. We really started to worry as there was no answer on the phone. James
was know for his pranks so we still stayed benign. After the short discussion we decided to
head back to the house. As we pulled up the drive way we found the orange Skoda Fabia parked
in the driveway with the spare on the back. I talked to Laura about how I thought James
probably thinks he beat us here. There was a slight chuckle between the three of us. We walked
in the house to only be greeted by James, Johnathan and Julia with a smug grins on there faces.
They though they won the bet till they checked that there bags were already in there rooms.

After a slight argument we all ate the ching chon. We strangely picked up at the gas station of
course were kind enough to get food for them also. We all ate and talked. Then we walked up
the hill out the back door and had a re next to the dutch windmill. We gazed at the fading
light but unfortunately we missed the sunset. As the light went out the torches and ash lights
went on. We trotted back to the house found our assorted bedroom and went to sleep. There
was the occasional scream then laugh in the night as James scared the girls.

The next morning I woke up alone walked out the front door and breathed in the fresh air.
The house was silent. I always wake up early its a bad habit. I walked up the stairs to nd no
one was there. I then rushed down the stair to the front door to nd a note on the door. It said
meet us at the diner down the street, we left you the Skoda. Then next to it was the car keys
taped to the door. As I wondered how they all t in the gold but that was beside the point. I
took the car key slide myself into the seat, slid the seat belt on, put the key into the ignition
and lifted o" the hand break. I revved the engine a little as it had a nice precise sound. I pulled
out of the drive way and started to drive down the road when a lorrie cut me o" at the
junction. The car screeched, the glass shattered, the car crinkled like paper against the
immovable mass. Then nothing.

I awoke 2 years 35 days 1min and 45 seconds. I felt beyond weak as my eyes slightly peered
open, the needles in my arms, I didn't know what it feel as i couldn't sit up, I couldn't call out.
I didnt know what to do think. Where were they where is everyone am I alone. Then I saw
the doctor turn o" the machine and that was it.
