Unit 13 Drugs Guided Key Points

1. What is DRUG?
Any substance that is taken to the body that alters or influences chemical reactions in the body.

2. Types of drugs?
Hallucinogens, depressants and stimulant.

3. Categories of drugs?
Medical (do benefits to the body) and Recreational (do no benefit to the body).

4. Explain steps that lead a person becoming addicted to a drug.
When first use the drug, effect would be strong; set point would be drawn high
Human body needs more drugs to reach the same feeling; how tolerance is built
The body will be dependent to the drug and cannot live without it
While the person stop taking the drug, withdrawal symptoms would come up (vary from
nausea to cramp, depend on the drug), makes people difficult to stop the drug

5. Define ANTIBIOTICS.
A group of chemicals made by microorganisms that are used to kill pathogens or stop their
growth (by disrupting cell wall formation, inhibiting protein synthesis and metabolism in the
pathogen cell).

6. Why cant antibiotics work on viruses?
Virus are not alive/not cells

7. Common drugs + their effects:

HEROIN Depressant Modified from morphine; painkiller; having EUPHORIA at the first

ALCHOHOL Depressant

lead to stomach ulcers, heart disease and brain damage; impedes
metabolism in the liver; person become alcoholic: socially difficult
NICOTINE N/A Absorbed quickly via alveoli to bloodstream; more than 400 types
of chemicals, including tar (block airway and stimulate to produce
more mucus (CHRONIC BRONCHITIS); weaken the wall of alveoli
(EMPHYSEMA)); carbon monoxide (bind haemoglobin to affect
oxygen exchange (EMPHYSEMA)) and smoke particles; cause
lung cancer by CARCINOGENS (chemicals that can make DNA
mutate)
MARIJUANA Depressant Inhibit hippocampus via THC; cause shout-term memory loss,
slowing time, slowing coordination, PARANOIA (), dry-mouth,
hunger, numbness.
