ELL- Bilingual

Part 1:
Advantages of Bilingual education:
1. Students are able to learn the information in their native language and then transfer that to
English
2. They are able to keep their native language
3. They feel more comfortable in the school setting and are not shoved into an English only
classroom
Disadvantages of Bilingual education:
1. Costly and hard to find teachers
2. Possibly harder for the students to learn English
3. Use English as a crutch
Advantages of English only education:
1. Easier for a school to implement
2. Not costly
3. Makes the students learn English
Disadvantages of English only education:
1. Students are thrown into an English only environment
2. They might not feel comfortable in the classroom
3. Rely on other bilingual students


Part 2: Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program

One bilingual education program is Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program or TBIP. It is
implemented in the state of Washington and was created in 1979. This program serves about
eight percent of the states student population and addresses the needs of culturally and
linguistically diverse students(https://www.k12.wa.us/MigrantBilingual/BilingualProgram.aspx).
The program uses two languages, one being English and is a means of instruction to expand the
students language skills. It starts by teaching the skills in the primary language and at the same
time they learn skills in English. All tests are given in English. The students are eligible after
being given a home language survey and this determines if the student needs assistance. There
are multiple levels that students can score at: beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate,
advanced level.

Part 3:
If I had a class with twenty students and four students are ELL students a debate in the
classroom would have to be accommodated to suit their needs. In order to integrate the students I
would give them information about the topic, explaining what it is and the pertinent facts prior to
the debate. I would also place them on opposing sides so that they can brainstorm with other
students and gain a better understanding of the topic. Another idea would be to sit down with the
students and discuss how a debate works, how to make an argument, the material being
discussed and answer any questions that they might have. Also during the debate make myself
available to help them with the information. I could provide an outline of the material discussed
before and after so they can see what the culminating decision was. If they have very limited
understanding I could have them sit and be a part of team and provide them with the information
during the debate so at least they hear and see what a debate format is like.
