It is a dance to honour the sun
It proves bravery by overcoming pain
It is a sacrifice to relieve the sins of the
tribe

History of the Sundance (Outlaw)
The Sundance is an ancient ceremony practiced by the
Great Plains Indians
Outlawed in the late 19
th
century; settlers found it
gruesome
Settlers wanted Indians to be like them, therefore
banning the speaking of their language and practices
Practicing the Sundance lead to imprisonment or
exection


History of the Sundance (Brought Back)
Practiced in secret before law lift
Law lifted in 1950s
Practice uncommonly, continues to this day

Sundancer would fast for several days before the ritual
Ritual included piercing the upper chest with a hook
Dancer would lean back with a rope connected to the
hook and Wiwang Wacipi tree

Dancer would lean until the hook would rip through their
chest
Once that was done, the dance was over and the sins
would be forgiven
