and opera here in the Philippines.

“Ballet and Opera in the Philippines”

CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE BALLET

Ballet came from the French word
ballette, meaning “a dance”. The music
from ballet developed from a simple
compliment of the dance to a more
particular form of composition.
In the Philippines, ballets perform
stories based on legendary stories of
supernatural events. Examples of these
are Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang and
Rama Hari.
1. Tatlong Kuwneto Ni Lola Basyang
Lola Basyang is a ballet
version of the various folktales
written by Severino Reyes from his
Mga Kuwneto Ni Lola Basyang. It
teaches the beauty of the
Philippine Literature. It depicts a
grandmother on her rocking chair
with little children.

2. Rama Hari
Rama Hari means “King Rama”. In
the Philippines, it is the modifies
version of Ramayana, an Indian
epic. It was first shown in 1980
through the collaboration of the
following:
1. Ryan Cayabyab, National
Artist for Music (music)
2. Alice Reyes, National Artist
for Dance (choreography)
3. Bienvenido Lumbera,
National Artist for Literature
(script)
4. Salvador Bernal, National
Artist for theater Design
(theater design)

CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE OPERA

Like other art forms, operas are a
venue for airing one’s opinion, judgement,
or sentiment. Love, deception, revenge,
and crime are common themes in most
Philippine operas. Examples of Philippine
operas are La Loba Negra, Noli Me
Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and
Sangdugong Panaguinip.
1. Sangdugong Panaguinip
The first Philippine opera
written in Tagalog is Sangdugong
Panaguinip. Known as the “Father
of Philippine Opera.” Ladislao
Bonus Composed this one-act
opera with five scenes.
2. La Loba Negra
La Loba Negra means “the
black she-wolf”. This is a Filipino
opera in three acts. Its music
composed by 2014 National Artist
Francisco Feliciano and it’s libretto
written by Fides Cuyugan Asensio,
a renowned soprano.
3. Noli Me Tangere
Noli Me Tangere that means
“touch me not”, it is an opera
based on the novel by Dr. Jose
Rizal. This opera version is written
by the National Artist for Music,
Felipe Padilla de Leon.
4. El Filibusterismo
According to Rizal, El
Filibusterismo, which is intended
for the Filipinos crying out for
freedom, is more mature and
deeper than the first novel,
depicting a more desperate point
of view on the social and political
situation of the country.

“Musical Play in the Philippines”

Musical plays are performed in
theaters combining songs, acting, spoken
dialogue, and dance. Usually, they use
modern themes incorporating tunes that
can be easily sung by a common singer
in a popular singing style.

5. Daragang Magayon
6. Magsimula Ka, the Musical

“Original Performance with the

Use of Media”
As theater production became
more elaborate and complicated, there
came a need to define the people’s roles
in the theater. During the early history of
theater, people involved in the production
had multiple roles and tasks. It was
common to have actors who were also
set builders, choreographers, etc.

MAJOR ROLES PEOPLE PLAY IN

THEATER PRODUCTTION
1. Director
The Director collaborates
with the designers concerning the
costume, stage, lightning, sound,
props, music and the like to make
sure that his or her vision realized.
2. Actor
The Actor is the most
important visual component of
theater. He or she uses his or her
acting talents to portray a
character with credibility.
3. Choreographer
A Choreographer is in
charge of the dance and other
lyrical movements of a play. He or
she has to make sure that the
dance style is aligned with the
director’s artistic vision.

“Cheerleading”
Cheerleading and clear dancing Mr. Alday: Yes, Sir!
are two terms with similarities and
differences. Cheerleading requires
precise movements because of the stunts
used with the inclusion of gymnastics
skills. It is an art and a sport with a
combination of dynamic movements that
incites the audience.
Cheer dancing, on the other hand,
is the part where the cheerleaders dance.
It has chants and prvides popular music
to make the presentation more exciting
and fun.
