Product Structure Management
Product structure management facilitates the creation and
management of product configuration and Bill of Materials
(BOM)
Typically Product Structure (PS) contains attributes, instance
andlocationinformationof an assembly in additionto standard
BOM data
Standard BOM can be generated from Product Structure
automatically
Product Structure and parts can be associated with product

Version Control
Version of a document is created.
Between saves (immediate instances of documents).
Independent of review process.
PDM keeps a copy of all versions till the document is
released (optional).
PEMP- AME2501
24
M.S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies - Bangalore
Revision Control
Deals with the modification of already released data / document.
Modification is not allowed on a released file.
PDM vault maintains multiple revisions of same data.
To use the released data as the basis for new work PDM will copy
the file and places it in.

Baseline
Baseline is a snapshot of the Data at a particular
instance of time
Baselines are created at important stages of the
product life cycle
PDM allows users to retrieve a particular product
configuration by baseline query

Check Out and Check In
Check out
For doing any modification on the PDM controlled
document, user must check out the file from PDM
The user must have sufficient privilege to Check out the
document at the current state
When checked out, the particular document is locked for all
other users for modification
Others can have read only access
Check In
Once the user completes the modification, the file can be
Checked in back to EDM.
This action will release the lock for other users
Ownership of the checked in file changes from user to vault

M.S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies - Bangalore
Application Integration
How does the PDM system interact with data
authoring tools ?
Not all PDM systems integrate seamlessly with
authoring tools like CAD systems, Viewers, Editors
etc

Lifecycle represents different states the product goes
through from concept to becoming obsolete

Concurrent Engineering
Concurrent Engineering is a systematic approach to
the concurrent design of products and their related
processes, includingmanufactureandsupport
The objective of Concurrent Engineering, is to
command all the stages of the product development
process simultaneously and to concentrate on
shortening the development process and reducing
development costs.
The idea is also to preserve the high quality of
production by constantly developing the
manufacturingprocess
PEMP- AME2501
42
M.S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies - Bangalore
The idea of CE is very design and designer oriented. The
design, production, and marketing of products have
traditionally been carried out consecutively as a series of
repeatedfunctions.
The product goes through the different stages of design
consecutively;
the product designs are moved to production planning,
which designs the production and the necessary
manufacturingsoftwarefor themanufacturingprocess.
The procurement organization can then carry out material
acquisitionsandproductioncanbeginontheactual product.
Accordingtotheprinciplesof CE thewholeprocessought to
be carried out simultaneously in order to achieve the best
result overall.
The idea is to make the totality efficient rather than to
rationalizeindividual subprocesses
