Case Studies: National Bookstore, Philippines

Introduction


The largest bookstore chain in the Philippines gets an IIDA award-
winning lighting treatment.

Brief
National Bookstore is the largest bookstore chain in the Philippines. In the last 3 years, it went through major renovations in store
design and layout. Architect Roy Villarosa of Villarosa Architects and Associates was responsible for the bookstore's present look.


Lighting Solution
Villarosa, an expert in lighting technology, opted to use all the proper lighting products for retail store application. He referred to the
Philips Lighting Manual as well as our International Lighting Reviews for the type of layout he wanted.


General lighting is achieved with the use of TBS305 2/36W M1 luminaires (with conventional magnetic ballast and capacitor)
spaced at 1.8x2.4 meters apart at a ceiling height of 3 meters. We also made use of the New Generation TLD 36W color 84 and
PC-L 18W color 84.


Shelves were lit with appropriate lighting fixtures for added vertical illumination. All entrances to the store are lit by downlights
spaced 1.2 meters apart, for an average illumination 350 lux on the floor.

Some sections displayed special products like rare books or sale items. For these sections, the design was a round-lowered ceiling
which the architect aptly called the UFO. We made use of appropriate downlights so that the lighting levels reached 1500 lux on the
horizontal and 800 lux on the vertical.


New improved specifications for upcoming bookstore projects are on the works, with plans to replace existing specs with CDM-R
fixtures, which responds better to voltage fluctuations.


The lighting design for National Bookstores received the Section Award in the 1999 International Illumination Design Awards.
