LSI: Light Source International

LSI is an architectural lighting solution provider in India for both the internal and the external spaces.
It was established in the year 2000 and since then they have succeeded in providing lighting solution
to numerous projects with various typologies. Their solutions to the lighting issues are technologically
innovative and aesthetically engaging. It represents an exclusive selection of global 8light
manufacturing brands in India sharing one common intention i.e., innovation. Their passion for light
shows through their works in technological innovations to innovation in lighting product design.

So, to have a better understanding about their lighting potentials, we were taken to different
chambers where in it had different props installed within, to showcase different lighting techniques
to enhance the experience of the viewer. They quoted that “the purpose decides the modes of lighting
and that there is no technique which is right or wrong. It should give the optimum level of illumination
but considering that it does not gives off glare or disrupts the essence of the objects.” In order to
achieve such outcomes, few approaches were shown to us which are:

1. Chamber 1: The Experiential Chamber/ Space.

• The first kind of lighting system that was introduced was to showcase multiple ways
of illuminating a single space using various fixtures just to create an ambience lighting
in a space and not onto a specific task
Fixture name: Underscore Strip Lights which is invisible as its incapsulated in a silicon
profile with a 45º channel which is applicable for both indoor and outdoor lighting
system. Also, different dimming features and required amount of wattage can be
adjusted to achieve the optimum luminosity or its reach with respect to the size of its
space used for.

• To generally lit up small artworks on the wall adjustable fixtures are used so that it
captures the viewers attention and leaves no dark edges (shadows). In case of large
paintings normal adjustable slice fixtures leaves dark edges thus not completely
illuminating the artwork. Then wall washers are used which illuminates the entire wall
and not a specific area so its easy to add more stuffs to the wall as it will illuminate all
the artworks equally leaving no dark edges in each one. There are two types: round
and linear. The round wall washers still cast some shadows on its periphery but the
linear drives it off completely and gives more smooth touch to its so it’s advisable to
use the linear wall washer as it gives complete illumination to the wall.
Then another type of fixture known as the Palco Framer which is expensive and hence
are advised to be used to highlight the most expensive piece of artwork or artwork
which needs the most attention. It’s used to illuminate the artwork as it gives the
freedom to change its directions and shape, along with the levels of illumination
through out the whole dimension. It gives the freedom to be more creative by
allowing us to play with the contrast, size and form, also create little frames inside it
of anything, be it a logo or some pattern to throw its imprint on the wall. It can be
used for photography as well to bring out the different light scenes like the sunsets
or twilight.

• Grazer is another fixture which is used to highlight the undulance or texture or the
material of the surface. It is a linear profile with 10º inclination which allows the
beams to fall directly on the surface thus enhancing its quality and creating effects
with light and shadow. The same effect can be created with the wall washer but then
it doesn’t accentuate the undulances as the grazer does. The grazer is placed closed
to the wall (50 to 100 mm) while wall washer is placed further away from the wall (1
m). It can be hidden using a pelmet or can be mounted on the roof surface directly. It
caters to the flexibility of mounting it on the floor as well.
• To light a sculpture within a niche its necessary to have the lighting all across the 3
dimensions rather than lighting only the horizontal surface to give a wholesome
view of the art work with all its undulance and craftmanship. So to achieve it tracks
light are installed in all the three directions to give optimum illumination of the art
work. So for the back lighting led strips are attached to it which are tuneable and
also comes in RGB. With the change in colours, it gives a different meaning to it.
Therefore, two layers of lighting is used one with Pelco framers and back lighting.

• The next luminous effect which was shown is its impact of cool white light and warm
white light on the various surfaces. For example, for accentuating the gold jewellery
warm light should be used and for the silver jewellery cool light is used. To
summarize it rooms with warm colours should use warmer tones of light and room
with cool colours should use cooler tones of light. It then keeps the essence of the
room. So, with the use of tuneable fixtures, it can be altered when required.

• In the next type of lighting typology, it showcases how horizontal lighting can bring
in the necessary illumination to a space. So here the most important factor that
needs to be considered is Visual Comfort. There are two cases: as in when the lights
are arranged in a way that it needs to be seen and the other times it shouldn’t be.
When the need is to bring focus to a particular object for example in a merchandise
store, to create a visual attention there needs to be a play of contrast with the
lighting as in the object is lit 100% whereas the ceiling is 0. So with high contrast
comes lack of visual recognition hence in places where visual recognition is required
its necessary to give uniform amount of lighting which lits the whole space but at
the same time gives a facial or body recognition.
• The next type of lighting is known as the Trick Lighting with a beam of 360º to play
with light and shadow, showcase the texture and the edges.
2. Chamber 2: The outdoor lighting fixtures
• The Trick 180º which was used for illuminating the indoors can also be used for the
outdoors with it being mounted on the floor. Floor/ground-mounted recessed
luminaire intended for use with LED light sources. Comprises body and frame casing.
Body in AISI 304 stainless steel with safety glass flush with the floor and black screen
printing; A2 stainless steel cable gland completes with output power supply cable
type.2x1mm². The cable is provided with IP68 anti-transpiration device. Casing in
polypropylene plastic complete with AISI 304 stainless steel ring, to be ordered
separately. Optics with plastic lenses or reflectors. Safe. low voltage power supply at
constant current (350/500/700mA depending on the type of specific recessed
luminaires) to be ordered separately. Static load resistance 2000 Kg using frame
casing to be ordered separately. Roll-over product in accordance with EN 60598-2-
13 (torsion strength and shear load tests). The luminaires cannot be used in lanes
where they are subjected to horizontal stresses caused by acceleration, braking
and/or changes of direction. Product is not considered suitable for the swimming
pools
• I-way Bollard Round: - Direct light luminaire for use with LEDs. The fixture is installed
in the ground. iWay has a body and lamp compartment. Extruded aluminium body;

3. Studio: In it how the lighting systems introduced in the two chambers i.e., indoors and the
outdoors are applied in a way which
• are task oriented,
• gives drama or contrast to the space,
• adequate amount of lighting for visual comfort or visual attention.
• Creates a sense of visual recognition.
• Application of warm and cool tones, RGB with respect to the mood and the purpose
of the space.
4. Tunnel: It ended with a light show, showcasing all the type of luminaires it had in a
collaborative way as in how and what kind of impact it can create in a space.
