Engr2202 Project 2 Fall 2014 Due Oct 15, 2014

1. A 1 kg collar is attached to a spring and slides without friction along a circular rod
which lies in a vertical plane. The spring has a constant k = 0.6 KN/m and is
undeformed when the collar is at B. Knowing that the collar is released from rest
at point C, use energy principles to (a) determine and plot the speed of the collar
as a function of for values of from 90to
m
, where
m
is the maximum value
of , (b) determine the maximum speed of the collar and the corresponding value
of .
2. Redo the analysis to include friction where
k
= 0.2. Determine and plot on the
same graphs as 1 (a) the speed of the collar as a function of for values of
from 90to
m
, where
m
is the maximum value of , (b) determine the maximum
speed of the collar and the corresponding value of for the case with friction.

3. Write a 3-5 page report describing your analysis. Discuss and COMPARE the
plots with and without friction. Include all calculations, diagrams, explanations,
graphs etc. in the 3-5 pages. ALL plots from (1) and (2) should be on one graph.
Address the following questions in your write up as well: Would results have
been different if the shape were an ellipse instead of a circle? If yes, how? If drag
due to air resistance were included, how would this change your graphs? What
percentage error did we get for maximum speed when we neglected friction?
