How to measure with micrometers

Parts of the micrometer

Place the object between the anvil and the spindle
Spin ratchet until you hear clicks
Each micrometer has a reading line on the sleeve
The vertical long lines each represent one millimetre
The shorter ones each denote half a millimetre
The edge of the thimble is graduated into fifty divisions
Each line on the thimble is one hundredth of a millimetre
A single revolution of the thimble moves the spindle one half millimetre
To read the measurement on the micrometer
o See how many millimetre lines are showing on the left of thimble
edge
o then see if there are any five-tenths millimetre lines between the
edge and the millimetres
o look at the thimble and see what number lines up with the line on
the sleeve

0.06mm
Example: (15.56mm)
15 vertical long lines are showing on the
left of the thimble edge = 15mm
There is a five-tenths millimeter lines
between the edge and the millimeters
= 0.5mm
The 6
th
line of the thimble lines up with the
sleeve = 0.06mm
