Coronation Street and Emmerdales merged fairy-tale
themed promotional advert analysis
In this essay I will be analysing Coronation street and Emmerdales merged fairy-tale themed promo. Titled 'Once Upon A Wethersfield... Happy Emmerdale After', the video features characters from each soap in twisted fairy-tale guises that reference their current situations Throughout the advert it shows the different love stories that are in both soap operas. Each of the relationships and situation- ships has a different themed fairy-tale dress up to go with them. This gives the audience clues in how the episodes and love stories will go on through the series. The advert only focuss open the main characters and main story lines for this promotional advert as one of the main themes for soaps is romances. This advert is for the summer holidaying months. The first scene we see as an audience is little red riding hood theme, this is of Carla Barlow(played by Alison king) as little red riding hood, this character has a glum look on her face as she turns around to look at her brother Rob Donovan as the big bad wolf. This is following on from his secret murder of Tina Maynard. This portrays the glum faces on both of their faces; it also is why he is in the back in shade showing regret and Asif he is hiding from the truth, as no one knows expect his sister. Charity Maceys thoughts of deception about husband Declan show when you can see her looking upset and angry cradling a poisoned apple very carefully. Proving to the audience that she is going to get revenge or payback and poison him in real life with some kind news or interactions with other cast members, seen as Zeedan nadir is in the background staring at charitys silhouette The third scene shows Leanne Tilley with boyfriend Kal Nasirs daughter Ayla as Rapunzel. This shows a separate story line and love triangle. This shows Ayla in a wedding dress giving speculations to the audience that there may be a wedding in this summers episodes. Weddings are another well-known theme for soaps. In the next theme it shows tony Stewart (Terence Maynard) as he can be seen standing in front of a magic mirror with Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) before it reveals his wicked side and dealings with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford). This shows signs of affair and it seems that Tracy Barlow is the only one in the advert smiling up to now. Although Liz McDonald gives a loving look to tony, as she does not know yet what has happened. This shows that all will be released in the show.
Sleeping beauty is used in the next scene as it shows Moira and Cain Dingle's marriage problems. This could show that they are put to bed and that they will be happy and loving within the summer episodes. A long shot is used and this is to show the setting that the characters are in. The advert has shown well known fairy tales so that the audience can relate easily. The sound in the piece is all non- diegetic as there is no dialogue and only the sound of the clips soundtrack of tainted love haunted music box version of the sound going with the fact of that each relationship or situation has gone sour that is referenced in the music to go with the promotional advert. In conclusion I think that the fairy-tale advert is very clever with that situation in the soap opera have been paired to the fairy-tale stories, it makes the audience interested and makes them guess what is going to happen while giving them hints throughout the advert.
