Be Aware of Major

Maelstroms
Maelstroms and whirlpools are swirling bodies of water created by
ocean tides. While many maelstroms and whirlpools are too weak
to cause harm to large ships, they can sink smaller boats.
Drowning is also a real danger. If you find yourself in a whirlpool or
maelstrom, stay calm. The largest danger is caused by being
disoriented and nauseated in the water.
1. Keep your head out of the water to
keep your bearings.
2. Use your arms to make long, powerful
strokes and your legs to flutter kick.
3. Swim diagonally toward safety so you
can use the current instead of fighting it.
4. Once youre out of the whirlpool, keep
swimming towards safety to keep from
getting sucked back in.
Remember! Dont fight the tide; Swim to the side!
