Focus
To compose shapes through pattern
blocks, know the differences in the
shapes, sides, and correct names.
Curricular Standards/
Benchmarks 1.G.2 Compose two-dimensional
shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles,
half-circles, and quarter circles. Or three-
dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular
prisms, right circular cones, and right circular
cylinders) to create a composite shape, and
compose new shapes from the composite shape.
Supporting
materials
On line lesson plans for including math
and childrens literature.
Assessment: Before reading each of the passages
out of the book ask the students what the shapes
are.

Introduction/Anticipatory Set: Read The Greedy Triangle to the class.
Lesson Focus/Activity: The students will be given paper patterns to make shapes, label, and write the
names of the shapes they made.

Also, a worksheet will be given to the students that will have different shapes again; they will label, tell how
many sides, and color the shapes. Every shape has to be a different color.

Lesson Closure/Assessment:
In closing the lesson I am going to put different shapes on the overhead projector and ask the students to
identify them and give distinct differences of the objects compared against the other shapes.

Prior Knowledge: Building on knowledge of
shapes learned in Kindergarten.

Anticipated Modifications:
Not all the students will be familiar with all the shapes. I
will have shapes and their names on posters in the
classroom.
Equipment/Materials:
Paper pattern blocks to make different
shapes, crayons, glue, and paper to
Safety Considerations:
We will be using crayons and glue. I will stress the point
dont eat the crayons or glue and dont sniff the glue.

Resource:

literature into mathematics. The book the Greedy
Triangle. Burns. M., (1994) The Greedy Triangle,
