Math Centers

Lesson
Objectives

Students will add, subtract, & multiply decimals to the hundredths place using technology &
previous mathematical knowledge.

Grade
Level

5th

Curricular
Focus

Students use the materials at the math

center to advance their prior knowledge
of adding, subtracting, & multiplying
decimals.

Supporting
materials

Internet, math books, collaboration,

assessments, & prior knowledge.

Physical Education Standard/s

2.6: Make precise calculations & check the validity
of the results from the context of the problem.
Curricular Standards/
Benchmarks
5.NBT.5: Fluently multiply multi-digit whole
numbers using the standard algorithm.
5.NBT.7: Add, subtract, multiply, & divide
decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or
drawings & strategies based on place value,
properties of operations, &/or the relationship
between addition & subtraction; relate the strategy
to a written method & explain the reasoning used.
Assessment
Check each students work before they move to the
next stage of the center to make sure they are
understanding and on task.

Introduction/Anticipatory Set: As the teacher I will explain how the math center will work & that as the
teacher I am the one who decides on the groups. I will draw their names & then put them in pairs. This will all
be explained to the students. The students will be instructed that the stations are 30 minutes & 15 minutes at
each station within the station. Before they can move to the next station the teacher will look over what they
have accomplished & how they comprehended the mathematical station.
Lesson Focus/Activity: These math centers are to engage the student in reinforcing prior mathematical
knowledge of adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. Also, that the students know if they need to move
a decimal and/or how to place it in the mathematical equation.

Lesson Closure/Assessment: Before leaving the station after the 15 minute timer has gone off the students
stay at their present center until the teacher comes over and checks their work, whether it is on the computer
or handwritten. This allows the teacher to see if the students comprehended the task at hand, how much they
accomplished in the time they were given, and which students accomplished more.

Prior Knowledge: Students have to have prior

knowledge of addition, subtraction, & multiplying

Anticipated Modifications: Make sure that Ells or

struggling mathematical students are paired with peers

along with knowledge of decimals & how they are

interrupted or used in the mathematical equation &
answers.

who can help to reinforce the information at the math

centers. Also, with Ell students if you can print off the
mathematical work sheet in their native language and in
American it will be easier for them to understand, then
they will start comprehending.

Equipment/Materials: Calculators, computer,

pencils, & task cards.

Safety Considerations: Make sure the stations a

secure, there isnt anything around or being used that
the students could be hurt by.
