Question 7 possible answer
Dear Jo,
Thank you for your letter. Im looking forward to our
holiday too.
I usually go swimming and sit on the beach, when it is
sunny. We can also play tennis or go for a ride. I have
two bikes so you dont need to bring one. We can also
walk up the hill near my house.
There is a good cinema in the town. If it rains, we can
go there, or rent a video and watch it at my house. We
can go shopping too, if you like.
Write to me soon.
Your friend,
Patrick
Question 8 possible answer
I felt very excited when I got on the train. I was going to
London to study at a language school. The train was
very busy but I found a seat with some young people.
The train started moving and I looked out the window. I
tried to read a newspaper but I was too excited. Then I
talked to the other boys and girls, who were very
friendly. When it got dark, I studied English. The next
morning, when we arrived in the station, I saw London
for the first time.

Question 7 possible answer
Dear Susan,
Thank you for your letter. Im going to tell you about the
Epiphany. I hope its useful for your project. On 6
January we celebrate the Epiphany and children dont
go to school because it is a holiday. In Italy children
leave a sock out for presents at Epiphany, not at
Christmas. A good witch flies around and leaves
presents for children. If you have been good, the witch
puts a present in your stocking. If you have been bad,
you get coal! But you can eat the coal because its
sugar coloured black!

Question 8 possible answer
Sophie did not want to go to the party. She wanted to
stay at home and watch TV. But she had promised her
friend that she would go. Katie wanted to go because
she liked Ryan. It was his birthday party.
Sophie and Katie walked into the room and went to give
Ryan their presents. He thanked them and said, I must
introduce you to my cousin, Chris. Hes come to visit us
from Australia. Sophie turned to see the boy with the
best smile she had ever seen.
And thats how my parents met each other!

Question 8 possible answer
It was very dark and cold in the house. I had come here
for a relaxing holiday from my busy job. The old lady in
the village gave me the keys. When I arrived at the
house it looked very different to the advertisement. I
put the key in the door but it was very difficult to open.
I was very surprised when I pushed the door open and
walked into the house, this was not a holiday home.
Then I heard a noise, someone was coming downstairs.

Question 7 possible answer
Dear Neill,
Thank you for your letter. I live in a house in the country.
It has three bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a big
living room. We have a garden round the house. We
have a garage, but we cant put our car in it because it
is full of other things!
The best thing about our home is my room. It is at the
top of the house, in the attic. It has a great view of the
garden. I can play my music very loud because no one
can hear me!
Best wishes,
Chris
Question 8 possible answer
It was beginning to get dark when the car suddenly
stopped. It was snowing and they were a long way
from the nearest town. Jack looked at the engine but he
had no idea what was wrong. They did not have a
mobile phone with them, so they decided to start
walking to the nearest town. They got very cold! After
about two hours they came to a village. There was a
small hotel there where they were able to get a room
for the night. The next day the man from the garage told
them that they had run out of petrol!

Question 7 possible answer
Dear Alex,
Im glad you had an exciting weekend. My weekend
was also a bit different. Usually I spend my weekends
doing sport and going to the cinema or to a disco with
my friends.
However, this weekend my aunt invited me to go to the
theatre with her. We saw the opera The Magic Flute.
Id never been to the opera before but I really enjoyed it
and want to go again soon. After, we went for a meal at
a very nice Greek restaurant near the theatre.
Best wishes,

It was pouring with rain when Mandy left the airport.
She had got a new job at a hotel in Spain and she had
thought that it would be sunny all the time. It was her
first time in Barcelona and she didnt speak Spanish, so
it took her a long time to find her hotel. When she
arrived she was very wet and very tired. She wished
she had stayed in England.
When she woke up the next morning, the sun was
shining. She went downstairs and everyone was very
friendly. She was very glad she had come to Spain.

Question 7 - possible answer
A SURPRISING DAY
It was the last day of our summer holidays. My parents,
Spot our dog and I had spent the summer with my
grandparents at the seaside. Spot loves being beside
the sea but he hates travelling in the car.
Now it was time to go home. We packed the car, said
goodbye to Grandpa and Grandma and called Spot. He
didnt come. We looked everywhere for him but we
couldnt find him. Eventually we left. Grandpa promised
to find Spot and to drive him to our house later.
We were sad to leave without Spot and drove 40 miles
home in silence. When we arrived, there was Spot at
the front door! He had walked home all alone.
Question 8 - possible answer
Dear Tim,
Thank you for your letter. It is always good to hear from
you.
I love my English lessons. They are my favourite lessons
of the week. We have a very good English book with
lots of interesting articles and stories in it. We often play
games and learn English songs. I dont like grammar
very much. Thats the only problem with English for me!
Our teacher is very nice. She was born in Australia.
Shes quite old and a little strict but she\s very funny too
and most of the pupils at our school enjoy her lessons.
Shes tall with long grey hair and she usually wears
black clothes.
Tell me about your French lessons.
All good wishes
Andrea

Generally good control, and confident use of
language. Coherent linking of sentences using
simple cohesive devices. Language ambitious,
i ncl udi ng compl ex sentences and range of
structures and vocabulary. Language errors may
still be present, but they are minor, due to
ambition, and non-impeding.
Very good attempt at task, clearly covering all
three content elements, with appropriate
elaboration and minimal digression. Well
organised, requiring no effort by the reader.
There must be a closing formula.
4
Fairly good control of language and linking of
sentences. Either language is ambitious, i.e.
showing evidence of range of structures and
vocabulary, with a few errors, generally non-
impeding, or the language is unambitious, but
virtually error-free.
Good attempt at task, addressing all three
content elements, with some elaboration.
There may be occasional lack of clarity, minor
repetition or digression. Overall the script is
reasonably well organised and requires only a
little effort by the reader.
3
Some control of language. Linking of sentences
not al ways mai nt ai ned. Si mpl e sentence
structure generally sound. Language likely to be
unambitious, or if ambitious probably flawed. A
number of errors are likely to be present, e.g. in
structures, tenses, spel l i ng, arti cl es,
prepositions, but they are mostly non-impeding.
Adequate attempt to cover task. May be a
rather simple account with little elaboration,
or a fuller attempt containing some repetition
or digression. One content element may have
been omi tted and/or the scri pt may be
slightly short. Adequately organised, although
some effort may be required by the reader.
2
Erratic control of sentence structure and use of
tenses, e.g. past simple not used appropriately
i n many cases. Language may be ver y
simplistic/limited/repetitive. Errors in the spelling
of PET vocabulary often occur. Language errors
are numerous, and will sometimes impede
communication. Punctuation may be noticeably
absent, leading to incoherence of sentences.
Inadequate attempt at task, possibly with
some mi sunderst andi ng. Two content
elements may have been omitted. It may be
too short or there wi l l be noti ceabl e
irrelevance or lack of organisation, which will
require considerable effort by the reader.
1
Ver y poor control of l anguage. Di ffi cul t to
understand due to e.g. frequent grammatical
errors, errors in the spelling of PET level words,
or poor sentence construction. There may be a
general absence of punctuation, leading to
serious incoherence.
Poor attempt at task, because has l i ttl e
relevance, is noticeably too short or very
disorganised.

Paper 1: sample scripts with examiner comments
Test 1, Part 2
Candidate A
Hi Karen,
How are you? I'm very happy you sent me a birthday
present, thank you!
I like it very much, because it's particular and different
from traditional presents.
However, I passed a wonderfoul birthday with my
friends, because we went to
a big Luna Park and stayed all day.
Friendly,
Andrea
Examiner comment
This is a nice, friendly card and it addresses all the
bullet points in the task.
It would have been better if the writer had thought of a
specific present. It would then have been easier to think
of something nice to say about it particular is a bit
vague and the person who gave the present might not be
sure if the writer was really pleased with it or not. Did
the writer mean very special, perhaps or very unusual?
In terms of accuracy, however is not used correctly,
wonderful is misspelt and the writer does not use an
appropriate ending remark. It would have been better to
close with something like With best wishes. However,
the writer still manages to convey his or her meaning
satisfactorily.
Band 3
Candidate B
Dear Karen,
Thanks for your present, it's particular and I like it
very much. I needed a watch because I'm always late!
What a wonderful birthday! My friends organised me a
birthday party on the beach and then we went to the
disco. We really enjoyed ourselves!
Love,
Valentina
Examiner comment
All the bullet points in the task are covered appropriately
and the message is clearly communicated to the reader.
The word particular is not used in a very natural way
it would have been better to say its very
special/original/unusual/interesting. It would also have
been more accurate to say My friends organised a
birthday party for me but, apart from these small
points, this is a very accurate piece of writing.
Band 5
Candidate C
Dear Karen,
I want to thank you for your great present, the mp3
Player. I love it ! I always use it to listening to music in
train, bus and at school too. It's wonderful!!!
A lot of kisses
Valerio
Comments
This card does not deal with the third bullet point in the
task and so cannot get a higher mark. It is, however,
written in an appropriately friendly style and the person
who gave the present would be happy with such a
letter.
It is a reasonably accurate piece of writing although the
third sentence would be better as I always use it for
listening to music in the train, on the bus and at school
too.
Band 2
Candidate D
Hi Caren,
I would like to thank you for the ball you bought me
when you were in London. Its really useful and the
same is used in Premier League... I hope my present
will be accepted in the same way!
Bye-bye
See you soon
Examiner comment
This card does not deal with the third bullet point. It
also does not sound like a thank-you for a birthday
present it reads more like a thank you letter for a
present given after someones holiday. The markers
might even suspect that the candidate had learnt some
English by heart rather than reading the actual question
and thinking about what it would be appropriate to write
here. The sentence beginning I hope my present
does not seem to fit the task set at all. It was careless
of the writer to spell Karens name wrongly although the
language used is accurate and quite complex. I dont
think she would be particularly happy with this letter.
Band 2
Candidate E
Hi Caren,
I thank you for console you bought me. It is the new
xbox 360. I play it every day with my friends and I
enjoy it. I hope you will come soon here to be
together.
Bye-bye
See you soon
Examiner comment
This answer does not deal with the third bullet point in
the task.
It says thank you nicely but Karen might be a bit upset
that her name was misspelt. It also would not be
necessary to tell her what she gave you as a present.

TEST 1 Paper 1 Speaking papers
10
2010 Cideb Black Cat Publishing
Working with the Speaking Papers in PET Practice Tests
Part 1
(2-3 minutes) See individual tests for other topics
tested in this part.
Ask each students questions about themselves, e.g.
their personal details, their likes and dislikes, their
habits, their daily life, past experiences and future
plans.
At an appropriate point, ask each candidate to spell a
word (e.g. a name or an address) and to give a
number (e.g. their candidate number, phone number
or similar).
Tip 1 Encourage students to give more than one-word
answers.
Tip 2 The students should be talking to you, not to
each other.
Part 2
(2-3 minutes) See individual tests for details of
simulated situation and visual materials
Outline the task to the students and give them the
visual material. Begin by saying, Im going to
describe a situation to you... .
Tip 1 Make sure you read the task out clearly so that
students understand everything that needs to be
discussed.
Tip 2 Sit back a little bit from the students and do not
participate in the discussion. Intervene only after three
minutes or to prompt them if they finish too early.
Tip 3 Encourage your students to ask if they dont
understand what they have to do.
Part 3
(3 minutes) See individual tests for theme of photos.
Give each student a photo in turn. Allow them a few
moments to look at it and then ask them to talk
about their picture for about a minute.
Tip If necessary, stop your student in an appropriate
way after she/he has spoken for about one minute by
taking away the picture and saying Thank you to them.
Part 4
(3 minutes) See individual tests for details of themes
and questions.
Use the theme of the pictures in Part 3 as the topic
for a discussion in this part. Relate the topic to the
students own experiences, interests and tastes. If
one student has not spoken enough, then you have
the chance in this part to ask that students some
direct questions so that you can assess what they
can do.
Tip 1 Take more of an active role in this part of the
test.
Tip 2 Encourage students to listen to each other and
show they are interested in what their partner is saying.
Mark students according to these four criteria:
Grammar and Vocabulary
Discourse Management
Pronunciation
Interactive Communication
There are a total of 25 marks for the Speaking Paper,
each area has a total of 5 and an impression mark of 5
is added to make a total of 25.

like meeting people from all over the world.

Exercise 2 (possible answers)
1 I read a book recently called State of the Union.
2 Its a novel about family relationships and about
recent American history.
3 Its by an American writer called Douglas Kennedy.
4 The book is about a woman who has a difficult
relationship with her own mother and who marries
very young. As a young wife and mother, she does
something foolish she helps a man who has broken
the law to escape over the Canadian border. No one
finds out and she lives a normal life for thirty years.
Then it all comes out and her ordinary life is destroyed.
Her husband leaves her and her two grown-up
children are very upset. In the end, however, perhaps
they all begin to lead more honest lives.
5 The main character is a woman, which is interesting
as the author is a man. She has very intelligent
academic parents and she always felt that she could
not live up to them. The book centres on her
feelings towards her parents, her husband, her
children and her life in small town America. She is a
woman who is prepared to make compromises and
who is perhaps a bit too inclined to hide things that
would be better out in the open. She is a convincing
character, in my opinion.
6 I would certainly recommend this book. It is quite a
long book but the story is exciting. You dont want to
put it down until you have finished it. It conveys the
feeling of life in America over the last forty years
very effectively in my opinion.
Exercise 3 (possible answer)
A film I saw recently was called March of the Penguins.
It was spectacular in that it showed penguins moving
back and forth across Antarctica. The camerawork was
amazing.
It was also realistic in that it was a nature film it was
showing how penguins actually mate and look after
their young.
I found it very interesting too because I did not know
much about the lives of penguins before seeing the
film.
It was certainly original I dont think there has ever
been a film like this before.
You could also call it romantic perhaps in that the
mother and father take great care of their own babies.
It was exciting in a way in that you do not know
whether the mother penguins are going to be able to
find their own young again.
At times it was frightening in that the penguins have to
endure very difficult physical conditions.
I dont think this film was ever funny as there was
nothing particularly humorous about it.

1 Skating. I first did this activity when I was about 13.
2 I used to do it once a week with a friend from school.
We went to the local ice rink in our home town.
3 You need ice skates and an ice rink, of course.
4 One year when I was about 17 there was a very
cold winter and a small lake near my home in
Scotland froze. We were able to go skating there
one evening and it was magical to be skating out of
doors under a big moon on a lake surrounded by big
pine trees. It was difficult because the ice was quite
rough, not smooth like at the ice rink. Also there
was no bar round the edge, of course, so it was
difficult to stop!
5 Id recommend this because it is fun. Its good
exercise and its nice doing something to music. But
its not a team sport so it doesnt matter to anyone
else if youre not much good at it.
6 Id advise someone starting this activity to have a
few lessons because it can be quite difficult to learn
on your own.

Test One
This is the Cambridge Preliminary English Test.
There are four parts to the test. You will hear each
part twice. For each part of the test there will be
time for you to look through the questions and time
for you to check your answers.
Write your answers on the question paper. You will
have six minutes at the end of the test to copy your
answers on to the answer sheet.
The recording will now be stopped.
Please ask any questions now because you must
not speak during the test.
Now open your question paper and look at Part 1.
There are seven questions in this part. For each
question there are three pictures and a short
recording. Choose the correct picture and put a tick
in the box below it.
Before we start, here is an example.
How did the girl get to school today?
M Its great that your brother has passed his driving
test. Did he give you a lift to school today?
F No, our car is at the garage. And I had a lot of things
to carry so I didnt want to use my bike.
M So what did you do?
F I caught the bus. It was very crowded but it didnt
take too long.
The first picture is correct so there is a tick in box A.
Look at the three pictures for question 1 now.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear each recording twice.
One: Whats the weather like in London now?
M so it wont be long till I come home.
F Whats the weather like with you in London at the
moment? Is it raining?
M No, it hasnt rained at all since I arrived. It was very
grey and cloudy this morning but its a lovely sunny
day now.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Two: What did the girls parents give her for her
birthday?
F Did your parents give you any clothes for your
birthday, Jill?
F Yes, they gave me a new pair of jeans.
F And did they give you that top too?
F No, they didnt. But they did give me these shoes. I
love them.
F Yes, they look great with the bag you bought last
week.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Three: When are the friends going to go to the
theatre?
F Id love to see the Russian ballet when they come
here.
M OK. When shall we go?
F Well theyre at the theatre from Monday 15th to
Saturday 20th. Would Friday suit you?
M No, Ive got a conference that weekend. How about
Thursday 18th ?
F Thats fine. Ill order the tickets tomorrow.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Four: Which man is Bobs uncle?
M You must meet my uncle, Jane. Hes here
somewhere.
F Is he that tall man with the beard?
M No, thats my dads friend. My uncle has a
moustache and very black curly hair.
F Is that him? Over there next to the short man with
glasses?
M Thats right. Theyre both doctors.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Five: What did Rita have for dinner last night?
F We went to that new restaurant on the square last
night.
M How was it?
F Well, the place is nice but the food isnt that great.
M What did you have? Someone told me the fish was
good there.
F I decided to try the chicken and rice but it was a bit
tasteless. The others had pizza but they said that
wasnt very good either.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Six: What does John OMalleys new wife do?
M The film star John OMalley got married today to the
make-up artist who worked with him on his last film.
OMalley divorced his first wife, the tennis player
Samantha Collins, last year.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Seven: What did the children do on Sunday?
F Did I tell you that we spent the weekend at my
cousins?
M No, I dont think you did. Did you have a good time?
F Fantastic! Jack and I went for long walks in the
woods while my cousin taught the children to ride
her pony.
M She lives near a lake, doesnt she?
F Yes, we wanted to go sailing but there wasnt
enough wind.
Now listen again.

Now turn to Part 2, questions 8 to 13.
You will hear a teacher giving some instructions. For
each question put a tick in the correct box.
You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions
for Part 2.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear the recording twice.
F Im going to give you some instructions about the
class trip tomorrow. What I have to say is very
important so please listen carefully.
We are going to leave tomorrow at 7.30. Please make
sure that you are here by 7.15 at the latest so that we
can check everyone and leave on time. I know this
means that most of you will have to get up by 6 but
Im sure youll enjoy the day.
Please make sure that you are wearing comfortable
shoes because we are going to do a lot of walking. I
know its been very hot but please bring a jumper as
it may get cold in the evening. There is no need to
bring any food or drink as everything will be provided.
You can bring books, CD-players or a game boy for
the journey but please dont bring cameras you
wont have time to take photos. We shall take plenty
of photos with the school camera for you all to have
copies.
As you know the aim of our trip is for you to draw an
accurate map of the village we are going to visit. So
this evening could you read your notes on preparing
maps carefully.
You will be working in pairs and each pair will be
working on a different section of the village. Three
teachers will be there to help you if necessary but
we would like you to work as independently as
possible.
After the hard work of the day you should be able to
enjoy a relaxing evening. There is going to be a
performance by a visiting theatre group of Romeo and
Juliet, which I imagine many of you are already
familiar with. This is going to take place in a beautiful,
historical open-air theatre. It should be a wonderful
experience for us all. This should finish at about 11 and
so we shall not be back in school till after midnight.
Now does anyone have any questions? ...
Now listen again.
Repeat
That is the end of Part 2.
Now turn to Part 3, questions 14 to 19.
You will hear a sports instructor giving some
students information about a sports course. For
each question fill in the missing information in the
numbered space.
You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear the recording twice.
M Good morning everyone. Welcome to the Lakeland
Sports Centre. Im James Brown, the centre manager.
Let me introduce the programme to you now.
Youve all expressed an interest in three of the sports
we offer here, so were concentrating on those for
our programme.
First there is swimming which will take place in our
olympic-sized pool. Then there is canoeing which
youll do on the lake. Finally, you are all going to try
water-skiing. None of you expressed an interest in
sailing, so thats not being offered on this course.
However, as well as these three sports there are a
number of options which you can choose to do in the
evenings if you wish.
These are basketball always a favourite among our
most active participants and table tennis. Usually we
offer golf but unfortunately our coach is unable to be
here this weekend. However, we are pleased to give
you the chance of doing some yoga classes in our gym.
Youve been divided into groups for the three main
sports according to your experience. Please sign up
for any options you are interested in on the lists
outside the main office.
Now the times of the classes. They run from 9 to 12
in the morning. Lunch is from 12.30 to 1.30. In the
afternoon we start at 1.45 and finish at 5. Please
make sure youre on time for all sessions.
You will eat your meals in our health-food restaurant.
All our meals have been planned to help make you
fitter. Doctors and food scientists have advised us on
what food will improve fitness and we follow their

M Well, at least history wasnt so boring today!
F Did you think so? I like Miss Merchant and Im sorry
shes not here this week.

from the board. I much prefer lessons like todays.
F Well, I suppose its good to have the chance to
discuss things a bit more but Im not sure we really
know enough about life in the sixteenth century to
say anything sensible about it. And how can we
know if it was better to live then than now? Id much
rather listen to the teacher talking about history than
other students in the class.
M Yes, but it does make us think about things a bit more.
And some of the students in the class have read quite
a bit about the period. Sam said some very good things
about what ordinary life was like then, I thought.
F Mm, I suppose so, but hes always reading history
books so he knows a lot more than the rest of us.
M Maybe, but I still found it more interesting than the
usual kind of lesson. It made me want to find out
more about the period and Ive never felt like that
after a history lesson before.
F Perhaps thats because you usually learn a lot more
in history lessons! Im glad Miss Merchant is back
next week.
M Well, Im not. I think Mr Black is great. I think history
would be one of my favourite subjects if we had him
all the time.
F But it would be difficult when you had to revise for
exams. Then youd have no notes to revise from. It
would be much harder work.
M Perhaps. Anyhow its not going to happen, is it?
F No, thank goodness.

Test Two
This is the Cambridge Preliminary English Test.
One: How much did Helens new jacket cost?
F I love your new jacket, Helen. Where did you get it?
F I got it on holiday. And guess what I paid for it!
F I dont know. 140?
F Less than that.
F 100 then.
F Well, a bit more than that. 130. It was a real bargain!
Now listen again.

Two: What is Robs fathers job?
M My dad started a new job today.
F Did he, Rob? Whats he doing? Is he still a taxi
driver?
M Hes given that up for the moment. He didnt want to
work such long hours. Hes got a job in a garage as a
mechanic.
F Oh, my dad works with cars too he sells them.

Three: What is Marys phone number?
F Can you tell me what Marys new phone number is.
I need to call her this evening.
M Sure, I think its 246779 but Id better check. Yes,
here it is. No, I didnt get it right, its 246799.
F Thats funny. Its almost the same as my brothers
his is 246679, so I should be able to remember
Marys.

Four: Which dress did Naomi buy?
F Which dress did you buy in the end, Naomi?
F I decided to go for the one with the V-neck.

summer so I went for the short-sleeved one.

new restaurant on the bridge but we couldnt get a

M So, what did you do then?

walk in the park. We talked about all sorts of things
and I really enjoyed it.

traffic jams just before the crossroads with the A 14.

F We have an excellent variety of programmes this
evening on Channel 1. The six oclock news national
and international news, then local news programmes
at six thirty is followed at six forty-five by a round-
up of todays sporting events, then the weather
forecast. At seven you have the chance to see one of
the most popular British comedy programmes of all
time again one of the first episodes of Mr Green,
starring Mel Boyd. This programme includes the
classic scene in which Mr Green takes his driving test.
At seven thirty the mood turns more serious with a
documentary about the lives of the children who live
in one of the poorest areas of Masterton, a small
town with one of the highest unemployment rates in
Britain. The documentary was produced by the same
company that made last years prize-winning series
of documentaries about the younger members of the
royal family.
At 8.30 you can see the second programme in the
new Celebrity Jungle series. Last nights programme
showed ten celebrities arriving at their jungle camp in
Brazil and seeing the very difficult conditions that
they are going to live in for the next two weeks.
Today you will discover which one of the celebrities
has been chosen by viewers to eat a plate of jungle
insects. Remember that after the third programme,
tomorrow, viewers will be able to choose which of
the celebrities should be the first to leave the camp.
The one who is left at the end of the fortnight will
win 10,000 for a charity of their choice.
The evening ends with Match of the Day at ten
oclock. Todays match is between Hampton City and
Inverkirk United and it promises to be a very exciting
game. It will be the first time these two teams have
met since the historic game two years ago when
Citys Mike Keegan scored all five goals of the game.
We hope you enjoy this evenings viewing.

between 9 and 5 daily. Please ring between those
times if you need to speak to someone.
You will now hear some recorded information about
the museum.
Following the success of last years special exhibition
on costume in the eighteenth century, we are
pleased to announce that there will soon be another
special exhibition at the museum. This one focuses
on food in the eighteenth century, and we expect it
to be extremely popular once again, so you are
advised to book ahead. It will show the diet and
eating habits of both the rich and poor members of

eighteenth-century society. The exhibition will be
open to visitors from the beginning of July to the end
of September. It contains exhibits that have been
collected from all over the world, although there is a
special focus on the local area.
Tickets for adults cost 1.50. Students and old age
pensioners get a discount and their tickets cost 1.
Children can visit the exhibition free. Special
worksheets are available for young visitors. Tour
guides are available if booked in advance, a small fee
of 2 per visitor is charged for their services.
The easiest way to reach Cornford Museum is by
train as the Museum is right beside the railway
station. You can also get here by bus from the town
centre. Buses 3 and 5A stop outside the museum.

F Yes. It was good, wasnt it! I think its the only football
match Ive ever watched that Ive really enjoyed. I
couldnt believe it when that first goal was scored.
M Yes, just two minutes into the game! Even so, you
couldnt be sure who was going to win the game
until the very end.
F Thats right, it was very exciting. A good game to
start the season.
M Yes, its been a long time without any football on TV.
F Thats fine with me. I could live without sport on TV.
M You couldnt! You watch a lot of sport on TV.
F Only because Ive no choice. My dad and brothers
insist on watching sports programmes.
M You could always read a book instead!
F But its hard to concentrate on a book when they get
so excited about things.
M Well, sport is really the only good thing on TV and
football is the best kind of sport to watch, I think.
F Its OK if there are plenty of goals, but there are so
many matches when no one scores a goal thats a
bit boring.
M No, it isnt. Its fascinating watching how the teams
defend.
F Well, if you understand the game, I suppose it might
be. The best thing for me is when they have a
penalty shoot out!
M You must be joking. I think they should be stopped.

Let me tell you a little about Bigglesham Hall and then you
will be free for two hours to walk around. The Hall has a
long history. It was built on the site of a fourteenth-
century monastery. Bigglesham Hall was built by Sir
Michael Rogers, a seventeenth- century writer. However,
new buildings have been added to the hall since then. The
eighteenth-century parts of the hall are particularly fine.
Sir Michael was famous as an early translator of the
Bible into English. His younger sister who lived at the
Hall until she married the poet, Christopher Brookes,
was the centre of a literary circle which used to meet
here. The playwright, James Thinne, wrote his most
famous play, The Bells, here at Bigglesham.
The Hall has been open to the public for about 50 years.
The Rogers family lived in the Hall until 1950 when it
was sold for 1 million to an American businessman.
His business collapsed in 1955 and he sold the house to
the National Trust. After a couple of years of restoration
work, the Hall opened to visitors in 1957.
The Rogers family collected many fine sculptures and
paintings. Some excellent sculptures are to be found in
the gardens so make sure you allow time to visit the
park too. There are also some very nice pieces in the
entrance hall but the best works are the statues of
Greek Gods which can be seen in the Blue Room.
At the end of the Blue Room, next to the Library, you
will find a very fine collection of silver. From there go

into the library where you should pay attention to the
remarkable portraits of Sir Michael and his sister.
Moving on from the Library to the Great Hall, make sure
you look at the fascinating examples of early books
which are on display there.
In every room there are guides who will answer any
questions you might have. An excellent fully-illustrated
guide book can also be purchased as you enter the
house. At the end of your visit you will be able to go to
our shop where you can buy a wide range of souvenirs.
So, I hope you enjoy your visit to Bigglesham Hall and

at Kings College, in G. Right. My nephews going to
be in Block F next term. Hes going to study medicine
and hes very tall with dark hair. Say hello if you see
him.
The next thing is some details about the book. Its
called The Social Role of Football. Right? Good. Ive
read one on the Social Role of Golf. That was
fascinating. I wonder if its by the same author? Lets
see who wrote your book. James Davies. Thats D-A-V-
I-E-S, isnt it? The one I read was by a James Black, I
think. It was published in 2001. Let me have a look at
the database of publications to see when the book
you need was published. OK, I see the book you want
came out in 2002.
Now the last thing we need to do is write the subject
area of the book. I wonder whether we should put
sociology or sport here. Lets go for sport. I think thats
where most readers would look for it. OK. Thats all.

there were no accidents.
M Well, it was OK for you. You could just sit and enjoy
the views. I couldnt relax for a second.
F Yes, the views were spectacular, especially at the
pass when we were up above the snow line. But I
could see you were worried and that made me
nervous too.
M Well, at least you didnt have to drive. You could have
had a sleep if you wanted to.
F I couldnt possibly have slept on roads like that. You
should have let me drive for an hour or two. I did offer.
M No, I prefer it when Im driving. I know youre a good
driver but I still cant relax in the passenger seat on
roads like those.
F I could have taken over when we got onto the
motorway though. There were no problems there.
M Mm, that was a relief. It was a much better road. But
youre not used to driving in so much traffic, are you?
F Why do you say that? I drive on busy roads almost
every day of the year.
M Yes, but not when there are so many lorries.
F Maybe, but its still no easier on the roads at home.
M Well, never mind. You can drive all day tomorrow if

M And finally an American illusionist has just started his
latest stunt. David Blaine has climbed to a platform
high up in a New York park. He hopes to stay there
for two days and two nights, and break the previous
world record of 36 hours.
Blaines platform is at the top of a 30-metre column,
which is as high as a ten-floor building and far above
the trees around him. There are spectators both on
the ground and on the roofs of neighbouring
buildings. His platform is only 50 centimetres across,
about the size of an unopened newspaper.
Other people who have attempted similar stunts
have always taken food with them or had it dropped
to them from the air. But Blaine plans to do without
food, water and sleep.
As he climbed higher, Blaine told the crowds through
a microphone that he was beginning to feel more
nervous. It was much windier than he expected and
it is also unusually hot in New York for the time of
year with temperatures not falling below 28 degrees
even at night.
Blaine told reporters that he got the idea from St
Simon, a Syrian monk who spent 37 years at the top of
a column in the desert after being sent away from his
monastery. He wanted to be alone and think only of
God. St Simon had a ladder which allowed people to
take him small presents of food and water. It is said that
animals in the desert came to lie at the foot of his pillar.
Mr Blaine has done a lot of preparation for his stunt.
He was trained in Hollywood by Bob Brown, a
stuntman for films such as Diamond Port. His
progress will be followed by the ABC television
network which will continue to provide you with the
latest news for as long as the stunt lasts ...

however weve extended it to twelve weeks. Thisll
allow us to watch and discuss more films together.
On Mondays well be watching a film. But dont go to
the University Cinema, go to the Central Hall where
there are excellent facilities for watching films.
As usual, we are going to study a particular theme of
the films we watch. In previous years we have looked
at the interesting topic of love in the cinema. This year
were going to focus on war films. Well be watching
films from at least six different countries and
analysing different nationalities approach to this topic.
At the end of the course, you must write a review of
one of the films weve studied and youll be required
to write 5,000 words. Please note that this is different
from the assignment the students did last year. They
only had to write 3,000 words but new university
regulations have required us to make this change.
Before I begin the first lecture, does anyone have any
general questions?
Now listen again.

That is the end of Part 3.
Now turn to Part 4, questions 20 to 25.
Look at the six sentences for this part. You will hear
a conversation between a girl, Emily, and a boy,
Alex, about a party they are planning. Decide if each
sentence is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, put a
tick in the box under A for YES. If it is not correct,
put a tick in the box under B for NO.
You now have 20 seconds to look at the questions
for Part 4.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear the recording twice.
F OK, so its up to us to organise the end of year party
for our class. How can we make it a really good one?
M Well, it shouldnt be too difficult. Everyone will be so
happy that all their exams are over that theyll all
want to party. We just need good music and we cant
go wrong.
F No. We should do something extra to make it really
special.
M What do you suggest?
F Well we could ask people to dress up. We could tell
everyone to come as a famous character from a film,
for example.
M Thatd be fun Id come as Dracula, I think - but I think
people would find it quite difficult to find a costume.
F Well, maybe youre right. What else could we do
then?
M We could organise some games and competitions, I
guess. Perhaps we could have a quiz.

F Well I like games but some people hate them. It
might seem a bit like school if we had competitions!
M Maybe a quiz is not a good idea but we could think
of some fun games.
F OK, well you try and think of some and we can talk
about it tomorrow. Lets think about food now. What
would be nice and not too difficult to prepare?
M Why not have different kinds of pizza? Everyone likes
pizza.
F Great idea. We can prepare them in advance and
they taste good hot or cold. Itd also be nice to have
a lot of fruit like grapes and strawberries.
M Right, but they might be a bit expensive, though?
F I dont think so. But I suppose wed better ask the
school principal how much we can spend before we
continue.
M OK, lets go and see him now. Anything else

Test Five
One: Who is going to open the new hospital?
M A new hospital is being opened in Central London
today. It will specialise in eye surgery and some of
the worlds most famous eye surgeons will be based
there. One of the first patients will be the famous
dancer, Isabella Dufour. The hospital will be opened
this afternoon by the footballer, Ryan Bishop.

Two: How long did the film last?
M Did you and your sister enjoy the film yesterday?
F Yes, I loved it though my sister found it a bit long.
M How long was it?
F Im not sure, it started at one thirty, no sorry, two
oclock, and we had time after the film to do some
shopping, so it lasted about two and a half hours. It
didnt seem long to me, though. It was very exciting.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Three: Who are the police looking for?
F The police are looking for a man who robbed a post
office in Oldham today. He is white and of medium
height with short black hair, a beard and he was
wearing glasses. Anyone who has any information
should contact the police

Four: What did Dan buy?
F My brother said he saw you in the bookshop this
morning, Dan. Did you buy anything?
M Yes, I was going to buy a novel but then I decided to
go for something more serious.
F So what did you choose? A biography would have
been a good idea I love reading them.
M No, I got a dictionary Ive needed a new one for a
long time.
Now listen again.

Five: What are Emily and Sophie going to do this
evening?
F Its a lovely day today. Well be able to spend all
evening in the garden.
F Thatll be nice. We havent been able to do any work
there for ages theres been so much rain.
F Oh, Sophie. Lets just relax and enjoy the weather.
We can do some gardening at the weekend.
F OK, Emily. Lets have something to eat in a caf on
the way home and then we wont need to cook

Six: Where did the woman first hear the song?
M Oh, listen to this, Mandy. Theyre playing that song
you like on the radio.
F Yes, its great, isnt it? Have you seen the video? Its
so clever!
M Yes, I saw it on TV a few days ago. Theyre a great
band, arent they?
F Mm, they are. But this song is the best. I heard it
first when I went to a club with my sister a few
weeks ago. Its a great song to dance to.
Now listen again.
Repeat
Seven: Where is the newsagents?
M Where could I buy some stamps for these postcards,
please?
F Well, let me see. The nearest place would be at the
newsagents just round the corner. Turn left as soon
as you leave the hotel. Then walk along the road until
you come to a supermarket. Its just before a garage.
The newsagents is on the other side of the road.
M Opposite the garage?
F No opposite the supermarket.
M OK. Thanks.
Now listen again.

That is the end of Part 1.
Now turn to Part 2, questions 8 to 13.
You will hear a newsreader reading some news
items. For each question put a tick in the correct box.
You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions
for Part 2.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear the recording twice.
M The main story today is that yesterdays earthquake
in Chile has been followed by an even more serious
one in Mexico. Amazingly no one was killed and
there were only a few minor injuries, but one of the
main roads in the area has collapsed. It will probably
be several months before repairs are completed. It is
the first major earthquake that the area has
experienced for many years. There were minor
earthquakes in 1975 and 1987 but the last serious
one was in 1947.
The Prime Minister is due to fly to Japan today to take
part in the world summit on the environment. He will
be joining the British team which has been working
with teams from all over the world to solve major
environmental problems. It is hoped that world
leaders will be able to sign an agreement on energy
use. However, it is expected that the United States
will not agree to all the points of the agreement.
New unemployment figures have just been
announced. They show a rise in unemployment
among women, particularly among women in their
forties and fifties. This, however, is balanced by a fall
in unemployment rates for men, especially older
men. Overall there is no change from last months
figures.
And now to this mornings travel news. No delays
have been reported on the regions railways and
yesterdays problems at the airports due to fog seem
to have cleared up. News has just come in of delays
on the A14 because of a burst water pipe at the
junction with the A602. You are advised to take an
alternative route if possible.
The weather today will continue to be sunny and
warm in all areas, although in the south some rain is
expected in the early evening and it will be cooler
than it has been for the last few days. Northern areas
should remain dry but experience strong, cold winds
in the evening and overnight.
Now listen again.

That is the end of Part 2.
Now turn to Part 3, questions 14 to 19.
You will hear a travel agent giving people information

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will
hear the recording twice.
F Hello, Mrs Smith, Im calling from Star Tours to
confirm your travel plans for you and your husband.
Youll be travelling on flight BA 254, sorry I mean
253. OK?
Thats on Saturday 16th August, as you know. It leaves
at 14.00 hours but you should make sure you check in
for midday. When you arrive therell be a Star Tours bus
to meet you. Youll be staying at the Grand Hotel. Its a
lovely three-star hotel. Many of our clients will be
leaving the bus at the two-star Sunshine Hotel so
make sure you dont get off with them. Your hotel is
further on close to the sea. As you requested your
hotel room has a good view of the very attractive
outdoor swimming pool and the mountains in the
distance. Theres snow on the highest peaks even at
this time of year. Included in the price of the holiday is
a tour to a famous, beautiful lake nearby. There are
many other great excursions to local places of interest

but there is a small charge for these. If youre

representative in the hotel to help you. Her name is

F Do you give your classes much homework, Andrew?
M Yes, I do. I give them something after every lesson.
Dont you?
F Well, Ive been experimenting with giving them a bit
less. Ive begun to wonder just how much they really
learn from doing homework.
M Of course, they learn. Homework helps them to
revise what theyve done in class and to prepare for
work that were going to do.
F Yes, but only if they do the homework themselves.
Im sure lots of them copy from their friends or get
their parents to do it or just take things from the
Internet these days. Thats if they do it at all.
M Well, I make sure that my students do all their
homework.
F How do you do that?
M I give them extra work if they dont do their homework
or do it badly. They soon learn to do everything.
F Well, you still dont know if they do it on their own,
do you? Anyway, Ive checked and of the five
students in my class who got the best marks in their
last test, only one had done all their homework
regularly throughout the year.
M Yes, but that doesnt really prove anything. They
might have got better marks if they had done all their
homework.
F No, Im not convinced. I think that students spend
enough time in school and theyd be better off doing
sport or reading novels in their free time.
M Well, sport and reading are certainly important but
theyve got plenty of time to do those as well as
homework if they want to. Most students would only
watch TV and play computer games if they didnt
have homework to do

Female presenter: And finally on Student Book Choices
I would like to tell you about a book that I would
recommend for your summer holiday reading. It may
not become a world classic but its enjoyable and not
too heavy, a change from the masses of reading for
information you have to do in term time. Its called
Anna-Louisa and is by J. P. Heartlea. Ms Heartlea usually
writes for a female audience but this book is likely to
appeal to both sexes. It is a romance as her novels
usually are but it is set in Paris at the time of the
Napoleonic wars, a far cry from the modern London or
Manhattan which we are more used to as the setting
for her love stories. The historical background is
convincingly conveyed although Anna-Louisa seems a
rather modern woman for her time. However, I am
informed by others who know more about this period
than I do that there was indeed the occasional well-
known woman of the period who showed similar
independence of mind. Anna-Louisa undergoes many
adventures some of them quite alarming - and you
wont wouldnt want to put the book down until youve
reached its totally unexpected conclusion. I wont say
any more as I dont want to spoil it for you.
If you would like to know more about L. P. Heartlea and
her work, tune in to Radio 4 tomorrow night at 7.30 for
an interview with her on the Friday night Arts Magazine
programme. You can even ask her a question yourself
by posting one on the programmes web site make
sure you get it in at least two hours before the start of

Now turn to Part 3, questions 14 to 19.
You will hear a teacher giving some information
about a college Open Day.
For each question, fill in the missing information in

You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will

Good morning. Id like to welcome you all to the annual
Open Day at Radley College. We have a record number
of prospective students here today and our aim is to
give you a taste of what life here is like. We hope then
that youll decide to study with us next year.
As there are rather more of you here than wed
anticipated weve made some small changes to the
programme. The talk introducing life at the college will
begin at 10.30 rather than starting at 10 as our
introductory publicity stated. Its also going to be held in
a different place the Lecture Hall instead of the
College Theatre as this is a little larger. We think that all
of you should be able to fit in there. The speaker,
however, remains as in your programme and will be the
Senior Tutor. The College Principal will also be on hand
to answer questions after the talk. Our speaker has
taught at the College for over twenty years now and
indeed was a student here himself before that so he is
in an excellent position to present all aspects of life
here.
For the rest of the day there will be a wide range of
things for you to see and do. Id like to draw your
attention to just some of these. In the Art Studio
where, by the way, we have some of the best facilities
in the area - you can see a Photography Exhibition. This
will also help to give you an impression of life here as
all the work exhibited was actually done on the campus.
Then you must not miss the Sports Hall. We had
planned to have some sports demonstrations there but
in fact youll find those at the Sports Field behind the
college. What you can see and hear there is a
concert. Some of our talented students from all over
the world will play for you in the course of the day.
Come and go as you please. Were sure youll be
impressed by what they can do.
Finally, we hope that most of you will be able to stay for
the evening. It looks as if the weather is going to be
fine and so we have changed our plans for an evening
disco. Were going to have a barbecue instead. So do
come along and were sure youll have a wonderful
time.
There are many other activities happening today you
will find details of these in your programme. So
welcome to you all once again and have a wonderful
day.
Now listen again.

Helen: So what did you think of the restaurant then,
Dave?
Dave: Well, I must say, Helen, it wasnt as good as Id
thought it would be. Youd given the place such
a rave review after youd tried it out with Katie
that I was expecting great things of it. I
thought that perhaps at last we were going to
get a really good restaurant in the town.
Helen: Yes, I was a bit disappointed this time too. My
steak was really tough and theyd taken that
wonderful cheesecake that Id had last time off
the menu for some reason.
Dave: Oh dear, I thought you were enjoying the
steak! My main course wasnt too bad, I
suppose but the starter! I wouldnt have
thought itd be possible to ruin a tomato salad!
The cheese board was good, though, I must
admit.
Helen: What do you think the others thought of it?
Dave: Well, well find out at work tomorrow, wont
we? No one said much while we were there. I
guess no one wanted to complain and spoil the
celebration for Jack.
Helen: Hmm, itll be strange in the office without him,
wont it!
Dave: Sure will!
Helen: Those people at the next table were a bit of a
pain, werent they? What was all that fuss
about?
Dave: I think they were having an argument about the
bill. They thought theyd been over-charged.
