Unit 4 Test

Section 2: Grammar
2 Choose the correct alternatives to complete the text.

Emily always said that she (1) could not have become/must not have become/could not become a
successful musician without her parents’ assistance and an enormous amount of determination. As a child,
she (2) need not/could not/did not have to play outside because she suffered from a disease which affected
her bones and her parents were concerned about her having accidents. It (3) could/must/should be very
difficult for a child to cope with a disease like that. As a result of having to stay inside, Emily (4) had
to/needed/should spend a lot of time with her parents. They both played the piano and the guitar very well
and tried to teach her to play their instruments. Perhaps she (5) needed to have/must have/should have
taken up the guitar or piano and followed in her parent’s footsteps, but all Emily wanted to play was the flute,
so she begged her parents to buy her one, which they did after much persuasion. From the beginning it was
obvious that she was naturally talented.

At first, Emily refused to take lessons from an expert, but her parents realised that she
(6) needed/should/must to have expert help to fully develop her gift. They found her an incredible teacher
who, after teaching her for a few months, announced that Emily (7) had to/must/could win a scholarship to
the Royal Academy of Music if she wanted to. It meant Emily having lessons and practising for several hours
every day. She (8) should/might/must have spent time practising the classical pieces for her audition, but
she preferred playing more modern music. As the audition approached, worries that she was not ready
began to overwhelm her. Although she (9) must/could/should have given up there and then, she did not
since she wanted to prove she could pass the audition. Apart from the prescribed pieces she had to learn,
she was allowed to play one other piece of her own choice so she chose a piece she had composed herself.
The academy panel were suitably impressed by her performance and composition skills and she was
awarded a place.
