Instructional Goals:
In this lesson, students will read an online picture book together in order to increase their fluency and
sight word knowledge. By using unison reading and having a large copy of the book on the projector
screen students will not have to worry about being singled out for their reading level. Throughout the
text, the questions asked by the teacher will stimulate their prediction skills and draw attention to their
concepts about print.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to
demonstrate understanding of key details in a text

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

ISTE 2a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to
promote student learning and creativity

ISTE 2c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning styles,
working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources

Instructions:
1) Pull up http://www.tumblebooks.com and either use a free 30 day trial, or log in to access the
online books
2) Choose a book that is within reading level for most of the class
3) Have your students sit in a way where they can all see and read from the projector
4) Together, have the students read each page out loud as a group
5) Stop when necessary to ask questions about the text such as Why do you think the character
did that? What do you think is going to happen next
6) Have students raise their hands and answer your concept questions
7) Continue this process until the book is finished

Adaptations: Different level books can be used for different level classrooms. Possible additional
activities can be done after the book is read relating to the book, such as a craft or writing reflection.
