Design Approach

Building in the garden Stein took Mughal art of garden monuments to another level.
Fusion Joseph integrated man-made construction with natures expressiveness. He typically
designed 3 to 4 storied buildings that fused with the surrounding trees, gardens and ponds.
Heritage factor Design were modernized but inspired by Indias past and heritage most of
the steins buildings had the Indian traditional jaali.
Vertical Gardens flowers cascading down their walls is what stein called vertical gardens.
Local Attributes J. A. Stein was good at working with local materials, granite or glazed tiles,
both influences of tuglaq architecture.

Microcosm of city A campus is self-sufficient unit looking after peoples working, leisure and
circulation. Infact, it is a microcosm of a city to a city.
Identity As in a city people belong, there is sense of pride. The city has identity; the campus
should also have one.
Unity and Cohesiveness The academic complex shows unity and cohesiveness which is
reflected in overall layout.
Heritage factor Lucknow has a distinctive architectural heritage. The overall physical image
represents a collage of different enclosed and semi- enclosed spaces and types- courts, terraces,
atriums, pavilions and colonnades, etc. which attempt to emulate the architectural character of
lucknow.
Integration in Distribution The different components of the campus have been distributed
into various zones. These are unified through the principle of shifting axis. This avoids the
monotony of a straight axis and allows the new buildings to be placed sensitively in relationship
to the existing one.
