Terms for USSR

Bolshevik- The family dynasty that came to power during the 1917 Revolution.
Nicholas II- Czar of Russia who brought Russia into WWI
Revolution of 1905- A series of Revolutions in Russia cause by the overthrow of the Romanovs and poor
leadership.
Menshevik- A member of the Russian Social Democratic party during the Russian Revolution believing in
achievement of socialism in opposition to the Bolsheviks.
Russo-Japanese War- Japan and Russia both wanted the territory of Korea and Maunchria. They agreed
to terms but Russia broke them so Japan attacked the Russians at Port Arther.
Bloody Sunday- The event where people marched to the Winter palace for better working conditions
and personal freedom. When they arrived at the palace, guards opened fire on the innocent citizens.
WWI- War against the German army. Russians were economically and militarily unprepared. In the end,
4 million Russian troops were killed, captured, or wounded.
Proletariat- The workers in a nation.
Lenin- The name adopted by Vladamir Ilyich Ulyanov, the major leader of the Bolsheviks.
Rasputin- An unliked holy man who claimed to have natural healing powers. He was murdered by
nobles because they thought he would not make good government decisions.
Provisional Government- Temporary government established by the leaders of the Duma.
Soviet- Local councils consisting of workers, peasants, and soldiers.
Communist Party- The named given to the Bolsheviks party, coming from texts of Karl Marx.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk- Treaty signed by Bolshevik to be at peace with Germany giving Germany and
other allies a big piece of their territory. Russian citizens disagreed with this.
Civil War- Russia disagreed because some wanted the return of the Czar while others wanted a
democratic government. The White army mainly wanted to overthrow the Bolsheviks.
Joseph Stalin- Leader of Russia who killed more people than Adolf Hitler, Stalin meaning man of steel.
