Description of Activities and Setting


The teacher will start the lesson by telling why (if) theyve moved to
the city they are currently living in (Charlotte). The teacher will then
ask the students how many of you guys have moved (to another house
or to another city)? By having them raise their hands. Then ask the
students who wants to share why they moved. The teacher will then
write down the reasoning students gave.
The teacher will tell the students that theyll will be learning more
about Westward Expansion.
The students will gather to the carpet and the teacher will go to the
following website:
http://americanhistory.mrdonn.org/louisianapurchase.html and read the
History Notes for Kids section. The teacher will then model notetaking when reading Non-Fiction text.
Divide the students into groups by having them count the numbers 1-4
and ask the kids to remember their number. Then specify which group
will go where i.e. All the ones will be sitting on the carpet, All the 2s
will be sitting on the back corner etc. Then the students will pick a
category (The US in 1783, Louisiana Purchase, Lewis & Clark
Expedition, Florida Acquisition, Texas Annexation, Acquisition of
Oregon Country, or Mexican Cessionstarting from wherever the class
read the textbook as a class) out of a random draw (use Ziplock bags or

will then assign a group leader in each group who will (later)
summarize what happened in the section they read. After the groups
have found out their category, they will read that part of the textbook
(Chapter 16) and take notes on what they have read. The teacher will
print out Westward Expansion map with each section of a piece of
paper and pass it out to the groups that are working on that part of the
Westward Expansion i.e. Louisiana Purchase map will be given to the
Louisiana Purchase group on which they will write facts they have
learned about Louisiana Purchase on the map. After the students have
discussed their texts the teacher will give them the map and have the
students write the facts they have learned as a group on the map section
and in the end have them join it all together to make it a US map.
The students will complete p. 95 in their student workbook (If there

The New-comer group will be given a map of US and
another sheet with map of Manifest Destiny. The students
will be cutting out the map of the US and label & join
territories (to make the US map) gained during Westward
Expansion.
