Lesson 2 Observation
Objective: I will compare fractions different strategies.

Take out homework

Write down the objective

Go over the homework (question by question) ask for the answer (who got it correct &
who didnt).
o For multiple choice questions use sign language alphabets.

Group captain hole-punches the tables homework.

ESL group goes to the back table where they play math games on the iPads.

Take out math notebooks.

Choose homework manager the student with incomplete homework brings a pencil to
lunch & the homework manager collects and brings the students homework(s) to lunch.

Read the problem togethermake a mind movie. Ask the students who made a mind
movie and who didnt. Read it again (2 step problem).
o 2 min to re-read & make a mind-movie or draw the problem then try to solve it. (1
student is responsible for the timer)

Compare fractions 5/6 & 7/8

Go over Close to 1 Strategy what has more left? Draw a number line and write the
fractions.

Kids didnt get itgive them manipulatives (pie pieces of 1/6 & 1/8)

Teacher Assistant works with ESL students.

7/8 is biggertell your neighbor why the missing piece is smaller.

Have the student copy down Close to 1 Strategy

5/12 & 7/8 find a benchmark fraction.

6/12 &

7/8 close to 1

o Which is bigger?

Copy down Benchmark Fractions information from the fraction strategies poster.

5/10 & 3/5 = 6/10 compare den to shoes (they have to be the same size)

Express the importance of denominator being the same size.

Copy down notes for Equivalent Fractions


o Common multiples
o One denominator is a factor of the other.

Talk to your team about when its a good idea to use equivalent fractions.

P. 21 go over the questionsthumbs up if you know then have them solve it.
o Solve the questions & talk about it with group.
o Go over the answers.

Assign page 22 as homework.
