Poppies are worn
because of the poem In
Flanders Fields that
military physician John
McCraes wrote. The
poppy was chosen
because the flower grew
in some of the worst
battlefields of Flanders in
World War I.

Armistice Day after World War
I in 1919. In 1926 congress
passed a resolution for an
annual observance and
November 11 became a
national holiday around the
beginning of 1938. The
fighting in World War I when
the Allied nations, including
Germany, took effect on the 11
hour of the 11 day of the 11

month. Then Veterans Day or


Armistice Day on November
11 turned to an official
holiday.
