RIVERS AND LAKES IN THE UNITED STATES

Summary: The purpose of this instruction power point is to


reassure that the students understand the different bodies of
water in the United States. We will also asset the students to
see if they have gain the information.

Learning Objectives: Given the facts and details the student


will complete the reading and answer the questions with
100% accuracy.

Content Standards:

Accomplishments: To gain knowledge about the bodies of


water in the United States and their characteristics.

Introduction

The United States has so many different types of


bodies of water. It would take us a very long time to
physically sail across them all. Did you know water is a
form of transportation to receive and deliver products
from other countries and states. Water is one of our
natural resources that we can not live without. Today
we talk about 3 Rivers, The Mississippi , The Missouri,
and The Colorado River. We will also talk about Lake
Erie, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Lets find out
some fun facts about lakes and rivers.

Rivers

What are Rivers and Lakes?

Rivers are natural water course


usually made up of fresh water.
They flow towards oceans, lakes,
and seas.

Sometimes they are gentle and


calm, and other times they are
rough an dangerous filled with sink
holes and vicious currents,

Rivers can be used for


transportation, sources of water,
hydropower and disposing of
waste.

Lakes

Lakes are a large body of water


surrounded by land.

Lake usually contains fresh water and


some can be salt water.

Lake is an inland body of relatively


motionless water that usually has a r river
or stream feeding into or out of it.

RIVERS
Mississippi River

Missouri River
The Missouri River is called Big Muddy and Muddy
Mo.
The Missouri River is the first longest river in the United
States .

The Mississippi River is approximately 2,320 miles


which makes it the fourth largest in the world.

The Missouri River is primarily use for interchanging


goods between different parts of the country.

The Mississippi River lies in the following ten US


states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and
Minnesota.

Colorado River

The first bridge build across the Mississippi River was


in 1855 with the first railroad bridge finished in a year
later in 1856.

The Colorado River is the seventh largest river.


The Colorado River was originally named Rio Colorado
or Red River by the Spanish .
The headwaters of the Colorado River are located in
Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. It flows
southwestward toward the Gulf of California and the
Pacific Ocean.

Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the largest freshwater in
the world.
Lake Superior has over 88 different types of
fishes.
Most of Lake Superior shipwrecks occurs
during fall storms called northeasters.
Over 350 ships have been wreck and
more than 1,000 lives have been lost.

Lake Erie
Lake Erie provides during water to over 11
million people.
Lake Erie is the twelfth largest lake in the
world and is border includes four states (
New York , Pennsylvania , Ohio and
Michigan) and one Canadian Province
(Ontario)
Lake Erie is the warmest and most
biologically productive of the Great Lakes
, and the Lake Erie walleye fishery is widely
considered the best in the world .

Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake by
surface area and the sixth largest freshwater
lake in the world.

The name Michigan is derived from the Indian


word s Michi- gama large lake .
Michigan is the only state that touches four of
the five Great Lakes.
