The Loch Ness Monster

Loch Ness is the largest sheet of fresh water in Britain and perhaps the most sinister,
even when the sun shines on its murky, peat-stained waters. Over the past 1400 years it has been the
reputed home of the Loch Ness monster, or Nessie.

Nessie does seem to have had a rather interesting history, provided you believe in
her of course. Some of the stories about sightings of her appear more plausible
than others. The earliest of them goes back to about 565AD when the monster was
said to have been sighted by the Irish saint Columba.
According to his biographer, St Adamnan, one of Columbas disciples was
swimming across the loch to fetch a boat for his master from the opposite shore
when the monster suddenly rose to the surface with a great roar and open mouth.
The onlookers were stricken with terror, but St Columba, making a sign of the
cross and invoking the almighty, is said to have repelled the monster with the
words: Think not to go further, nor touch that thou man. Quick, go back... The
beast obeyed and has never hurt anyone since.
Adamnans account is a rather vague portrayal of the monster. As the matter was
not written down until a century after Columbas death it is not very reliable.
However it is interesting that Loch Ness is the location for a story of a mysterious
beast.

No clear picture of the monster emerged until 14 centuries later in

1933. There are numerous claims of sightings of the monster before
that time, but none of these were written down and published. One
reason for this is that eye-witnesses say that they did not consider
their sightings newsworthy! In 1933 the loch was opened to tourism
in a big way and sightings of the beast in the loch increased in
frequency. Local and national newspapers began to feature the story
of the Loch Ness monster. A reports by Alex Campbell about a
sighting made by Mr and Mrs Mackay appeared in the Inverness
courier under the heading Strange Spectacle on Loch Ness. In this
article we see the first use of the term monster. Thus the story of the
Loch Ness monster was born.
