The first objective will be assessed by
teacher observation during the Proper Noun
scavenger hunt with 80% accuracy

an exit slip composed of a sentence that
begins with a capital letter, includes
punctuation and a Proper Noun with 80%
accuracy.

Materials and Resources:

Promethean Flip Chart: assorted Common and Proper Nouns (person, place, thing)
Per group: box of (identical/assorted) Common Noun index cards
Per student (23): pencil, language notebook, exit slip, library book

Lesson Introduction
3-5 minutes

1. Noun song: names a person, place, or thing.
2. This song will serve as a transition from previous activity and activate noun schema.
3. The students will put on their desk: language notebook, pencil, library book
4. The students will stand behind their chair during the song (as per typical transitions).
5. During the song the students will be encouraged to point to person, place or thing, sing
along with the chorus and march in place.
6. After the song the students will quietly sit down.

Procedure
20-25 minutes

1. Teacher will continue with verbal schema activation of common nouns using student
examples
2. Students will come to the Promethean Board when chosen and drag a noun to the correct
person/place/thing category. Several nouns of common and proper assortment will be
used. Teacher will ask the students periodically to turn and talk with a neighbor to
decide
the possible placement of a noun on the board
3. Teacher will circle the Proper Nouns and ask the students what they have in common.
4. After a short period of discussion the teacher will reveal that:
a. Proper Nouns are special naming words that name a specific person/place/thing
b. Proper Nouns always begin with a capital letter
5. Using the flip chart the teacher will ask the students to restate 10-13 Common Nouns as a
Proper Nouns (ie- day:Monday, boy:Justin, teacher:Miss Ferguson)
6. Next the teacher will demonstrate a T chart design and labeling at the Promethean Board
and demonstrate how to complete the Scavenger Hunt.
7. Students will draw a T chart on the next clean page in their notebook
a. title it- Nouns

b. label the left side common and the right side proper
c. choose a notecard from the box at the table and write it under the correct heading
(common)
d. students will then choose a proper noun that corresponds to the common noun and
write it under the correct heading (proper)
8. Teacher will circulate the room observing and checking on progress, coaching and
assisting
with spelling as needed
9. When directed, students will put notebook and library book in desk

Lesson Closure
5 minutes

1. Teacher will give each student an exit slip form.


2. Teacher will explain the directions:
a. students will take one of the notecards from the paper bag scavenger hunt
b. students will write this Common Noun on the exit slip and a corresponding Proper
Noun on the designated lines
c. this will be used to help them construct a complete sentence that
begins with a capital letter and includes punctuation and a Proper Noun.
3. Students will read their library book when the exit slip is completed and put in the turn-in
basket.

Accommodations
ESL students: Ashley, Luis, and Christian will be given an Exit Slip with the Common and
Proper Nouns supplied. They will write a complete sentence with the Proper Noun.
ESL student: Cristofer will be given two pictures that he will write/spell correctly and
illustrate on his Exit Slip
High Achievers: Maddy, Jacob, Justin, and Osmery will be directed to write two complete
sentences using two different Proper Nouns.
Teacher will assist with spelling when asked, as time allows.
