EDITOR'S LETTER
Hello everyone and
a big welcome to the
latest edition of your
Yesmag.
Following on from
those long hot sunny
days of summer we
now find ourselves in
the throws of Autumn.
The nights have started drawing in, there is a chill
in the air and the leaves have started to fall. Our
ever-changing colourful landscape turn our thoughts
to winter, wind, rain and the cold.
Halloween and bonfire night are approaching, spare
a thought for neighbours, the elderly and pets,
share some kindness, do some good and make a
difference at what can be a difficult time of year for
so many.
With thoughts turning to Christmas and buying our
loved ones something special, remember our local
shops have so much to offer. Our community is
important to all of us, and the more we spend locally
the better for the area in which we live. dont forget
you can find many of the local businesses at
www.yesdirect.co.uk
How we live and conduct our lives, the way we treat
each other, our neighbours, friends, work colleagues
or just the person in the street is incredibly important
to the structure of the neighbourhood and those in it.
With that in mind I would like to remind you of
some of the charities and the special people that run
these important community organizations, working
tirelessly, they really do make such a difference to
peoples lives.

The Best Christmas

Gadgets For Him

uying gadgets can be tricky:

if youre buying for a grownup theres a very good chance
that theyve already bought the
gadgets they want. But dont
despair, because it turns out
that there are lots of gadgetrelated gifts you can buy for the
man who has everything.
A good place to start is with a
case. You can spend hundreds
if you want something from a
name designer, but firms such
as Tuff-Luv make really nice
vintage leather Kindle cases for
around 40. And of course you
can get leather cases for other
devices such as laptops and
tablets too.
If he hasnt already got a tablet,
there are plenty of alternatives
to the all-conquering iPad and
iPad Mini. Amazons Kindle Fire
HD (89) is good for ebooks
and movies, and a range of
affordable Windows 8 tablets
have been launched by the
likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba,
all below 200.
If he fancies himself as the
next Jamie Oliver, Belkins
Chef Stand and Wand (29) is
a smart gift idea. Its a tablet
stand designed specifically for
the kitchen, enabling him to see
the recipe (or the tutorial videos
if hes using cooking apps or
YouTube) without getting it
covered in food. If hes more of

an outdoor cooking type, iGrills

range of smartphone-connected
thermometers (from around
34.99) give him a new toy to
play with while hes burning
burgers.
One of the more unusual new
gadgets weve seen is the
PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker
thats also an LED light bulb.
The 59 device is controlled via
an iPhone and Android app that
enables you play music and, er,
turn the light on and off.
For sporty types there are
stacks of gadget gifts, such as
the Fitbit Flex activity tracker
(75), the Zepp motion sensor
for tennis players (129),
Garmins Forerunner GPS
watches (89) and the TomTom
Multi-Sport GPS Watch (149).
If you really want to delight
a gadget fan, this years hot
technology is the smartwatch
- of which LGs G Watch R is
one of the nicest. The price
hadnt been announced as we
went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely
to be keenly priced - not least
because Apple has its own
smartwatch, which is likely to
be a big seller this Christmas.
If hes already shelled out for
a smart watch, how about a
drone? Parrots AR.Drone
2.0 (224) is a smartphone-

controlled quadricopter, a flying

drone that can stream high
definition video back to the
owners phone or tablet. There
are drones to suit all budgets,
from the 36 Quadricopter X4
to drones costing more than
600.
Many bigger drones are
designed to carry GoPro
cameras, which are small high
definition cameras that can be
attached to almost anything.
Our current favourite video,
a YouTube hit, was made
by strapping a GoPro to a
dogs collar and then letting it
sprint down to the beach for a
swim, but weve seen GoPros
strapped to bike helmets, to
remote controlled cars and
even to musical instruments.
Expect to pay from around
199.
You dont have to spend lots
of money for a great gadget
gift, though. The excellent
Aeropress coffee maker
produces brews that rival the
worlds most expensive coffee
machines, and you can pick
one up - brand new - for around
25.

Into his 80s - and still climbing!

mong all that delectable machinery on

display at this years Goodwood Festival
of Speed, the spectacle that gave me so much
pleasure was the sight of the veteran racing
driver Sir Stirling Moss demonstration driving
the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR up the hill
past Goodwood House, just as he has done for
so many years before. Nostalgia isnt what it
used to be some say, but when it comes to Sir
Stirling on the occasion of Mercedes-Benzs
120th. Anniversary, it certainly IS!
Do you know, it seems that Ive always been
watching this famous racing driver ever since
he was an energetic young man at Oulton
Park, driving in 500c.c. events or particularly
Rob Walkers Lotus. Mind you, in those days
the drivers would drive anything they could
get their hands on - F1, F2, Formula Junior,
Formula Libre, saloon cars and everybody was
so thrilled by the skilled driving of the young
Moss. Mercedes-Benz certainly were, pairing
him up with the great Juan Manuel Fangio
in their Silver Arrows of the early 50s, and
Stirling followed so closely in the tracks of
his mentor, that they called them The Train.
Then came 1955, and Stirling won the British
Grand Prix at Aintree with Fangio a very close
12

second, and went on to win the

famous Italian Mille Miglia road
race with motoring journalist
Dennis Jenkinson
in the brilliant Mercedes-Benz
300 SLR with the number 722
on the bonnet- denoting their
morning starting time. Then,
after Mercedes-Benz withdrew
from motoring racing after the
terrible Le Mans crash, Moss
drove the British Vanwalls to
many victories, Maseratis,
Coopers and Lotus until that
fateful day at Goodwood in
1962 when he was very lucky to
survive his terrible crash in a Lotus.
So, after 10 years of driving at the very top
flight, was that the end of motor racing for
Stirling? Not likely, because 52 years later he
is still heavily involved in the sport, and has
probably earned far more over those years
than he would ever have earned as a driver.
He is still as tough as nails, and a broken arm
a few years ago when he was knocked off his
scooter in London didnt worry him too much,
and neither did a fall down the lift shaft at his
London home breaking both ankles in his late
70s put an end to his racing involvement!
Now, that young Stirling is SIR Stirling in his
80s, which is why to see him wearing his
famous white helmet and still demonstration
driving at Goodwood has thrilled so many
people- but particularly me!
I have met and ridden with him many times
over the years, and I hope there are several
more of his Goodwood hill climbs yet to
come.

1. Arbroath - In 1885, Arbroath beat Aberdeen Bon Accord 36-0 (an average of
one goal every 2 minutes) in a first round Scottish Cup match. Thirteen of
Arbroaths goals were scored by one player, John Jocky Petrie.
2. Dundee - In 1997, Aberdeens Dean Windass received three red cards in one
game originally sent off for a foul, he was given two further red cards for
verbally abusing the referee and then throwing a corner flag into the crowd. Aberdeen went on to
lose to Dundee 5-0, while Windass was given a six-match ban.
3. Inverness - In 1979, a second-round tie between Inverness Thistle FC and Falkirk was postponed
a record twenty-nine times due to bad weather. Originally scheduled for January 9, the match finally
took place forty-four days later on February 22.
4. Hull - When half an hour of extra time failed to resolve a match between Hull and Manchester
United on August 5 1970, Britains first ever penalty shoot-out took place at Boothferry Park, Hull
Citys former home ground. The first player to score in a penalty shoot-out was Uniteds George
Best; the first to miss was Denis Law.
5. Loughborough - The 1899-1900 Football League Season saw Leicestershires Loughborough
Town FC win just 8 points, conceding 100 goals (including 12 to Arsenal in a single match) and
losing 27 of their 34 games (including all of their away games). Loughborough understandably
failed to be re-elected to the League the following season and the side was disbanded in June
1900.

Beer of the Month

If one of this columns conceits is that every month has its theme, then perhaps
November should be anti-terrorism month. For this is when we commemorate and
celebrate the thwarting of the great plot to blow up Parliament along with the newlyinstalled Scottish Protestant king, James I & IV.
The fate of the conspirators, personified by the crackling figure of the guy, is a
warning to us all that blowing up things, however strong the temptation, is simply
not on. But theres another side to Bonfire Night and thats the togetherness and
fellow-feeling of the decent majority, symbolised by the warmth of the bonfire
and cheering comfort foods such as treacle toffee and parkin. So here are two
seasonal specials to match.
The first is a variant on Newcastle Brown, Newcastle Nocturnal. It bills itself as the
perfect partner to the season where the clocks fall back and the evenings draw in. Its
an attractive dark copper in colour, with a warm caramel aroma spiced up by the addition
of rye malt. The body and flavour are surprisingly light and fresh and not at all sweet or
cloying, while the finish is quite dry and a little sharp.
Stronger and richer is Innis & Gunns seasonal variation on its usual oak-aged ale. This
one is finished over Canadian black cherrywood and rounded off with a squirt of maple
syrup to create a gorgeously toffee-ish nose; complex and sweetish flavours of spice
and fruit; and a finish with a pineapple chunk fruitiness. A beautiful beer for November,
but have a care: its 7.4% alcohol!

Professional Make-Up Secrets: How to Get a Perfect Pout
a natural pale hue is
an essential tool when

far down to the corners

make-up tools and

your lips into the

Thin Lips

Thin lips are a big beauty

concern for many women especially as they age.
Thats because over the
years, our lips lose their
plumpness and become
visibly thinner. Fortunately
22

theres plenty that can be

done to add some volume,
without having to resort to
fillers.
Choose lipsticks in light
shades and always opt
for a glossy finish. Lighter
colours work to make lips
look bigger by bringing that
area of your face forward,
whereas darker shades
have the opposite effect by
pushing it back.
Light-reflecting pigments in
glosses and lipsticks add
instant fullness to thin lips
- unlike matte formulations
that make the lips look flat.

Uneven Lips
If your bottom lip is fuller
than your top, then your
lips can look uneven - but
its easy to balance things

Bring the lip liner on to your

What Is Diabetes
And Can You
Avoid It?
By Alison Runham
www.alison.runham.co.uk

14th November is World

Diabetes Day, when
organisations around the
world work to raise diabetes
awareness. But recent scare
stories in the media mean most
of us in the UK are aware of
diabetes; were just not always
clear on the details or what
we can do to avoid developing
it.

Its All about the Insulin

Insulin is a hormone produced

in the pancreas to regulate our
blood sugar levels, ensuring
the glucose we ingest enters
our bodys cells where we can
use it. Diabetes occurs when
the pancreas fails to produce
enough insulin or fails to produce it at all allowing unused
glucose to build up.
There are two main types of
diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 Diabetes

Around 1 in 300 people in the

UK suffer from Type 1 diabetes,
caused by the pancreas failing
to produce insulin. It often
develops in a matter of days
or weeks and usually appears in children and young
adults, which is why its often
called early onset or juvenile
diabetes.
Its also called insulin-dependent diabetes, as the treatment
is regular insulin injections
24

which you normally administer

yourself. A healthy lifestyle is
important in controlling Type 1
diabetes too.
Causes: usually autoimmune
malfunction - antibodies attack insulin-producing cells.
Sometimes inflammation
or surgical removal of the
pancreas
Symptoms: Fatigue, weight
loss, increased urination and
thirst.
Am I at risk? Type 1 diabetes
isnt hereditary, but there
is a genetic link your risk
rises to 6 in 100 if a parent or sibling has Type 1.
Unfortunately, at present the
triggers of Type 1 arent fully
understood and it cant be
prevented.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 is far more common,

and on the rise in the UK,
where around 5% of over-65s
are diabetic. It usually develops
in people over 40, and you
wont normally need insulin
which is why its also known
as late onset, maturity onset
or non-insulin dependent
diabetes. Often it can be controlled by maintaining a healthy
lifestyle, but some people may
need medication to help stabilise their blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when

either your pancreas doesnt
produce enough insulin, or
when your cells become resistant to insulin and cant use it
properly. Sometimes its caused
by a combination of these
factors. It tends to develops
over time, unlike Type 1, and
symptoms may be mild to begin
with and gradually worsen.
Causes: Its unclear what
specifically causes Type 2
diabetes, but a number of
factors can contribute towards developing it: ethnicity
(its more prevalent in people
of South Asian, Black African
and African Caribbeandescent, and they may develop it earlier), age, excess
weight (particularly around
the waist) and genetic elements (again, risk increases
if a parent of sibling suffers
from Type 2).
Symptoms: Fatigue, weight
loss, increased urination and
thirst.
Am I at risk? To assess if
youre at risk, you can use
Diabetes UKs handy questionnaire at http://riskscore.
diabetes.org.uk/type2risk/

Gestational Diabetes

Around 5% of pregnant women

develop gestational diabetes,
which is due to increased blood
glucose levels - too high for

insulin to cope with efficiently.

It can usually be controlled
through diet and exercise and
disappears after birth, but it
does increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Pre-Diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a warning sign.

Youre suffering from impaired
glucose tolerance (when your
normally healthy-range sugar
levels rise after eating) and
often impaired fasting glycaemia too. While your blood sugar
levels arent quite high enough
for a Type 2 diagnosis, theyre
above normal and youre at
significant risk of developing it.

Reducing your Type 2

diabetes risk

and fruity! Choose fruit, raw

vegetables, nuts and low
fat, low sugar dairy products
- and stay away from salty,
fatty snacks and sugary
treats.
Eat right: Make sure you
include fruit, vegetables,
carbohydrates and protein in
your diet every day. Choose
raw fruit and vegetables,
wholegrain carbohydrates
and lean protein such as fish
and pulses whenever you
can. Try to eat small, regular
meals to stabilise your blood
sugar and make sure your
portion size is appropriate
for your age, size and gender.

Exercise right: Find an

exercise you enjoy and try to

Margaret Hurdman

Internationally Renowned Psychic, Medium, Clairvoyant & Author

nternationally recognised medium, clairvoyant and christian spiritualist, Margaret Hurdman has over 40 years
experience in the field of conversing with the spirit world. Following a near death experience 35 years ago, she
received a glimpse of the spirit world and it was these experiences that led her to realise she was to come back
to her body and work as a medium/clairvoyant. She also works tirelessley for Charity and is available for church
services.
Since that time she has devoted her life to using her gifts to help others and written three books on her experiences,
as well as many delightful childrens' stories. Margarets popular stage appearances bring her gift out into the world.
She brings comfort to many and chooses to do stage demonstrations to bring her gift to as many as possible. She
is driven to pass on the knowledge with which she has been entrusted, her shows and private sittings are always
full of her unique humour and personality that endears her to her audiences worldwide.
Her books are wonderful and her revised book of Children's Short Stories is fully illustrated in colour by the late
Norman Taylor. Margaret is based in Llandudno and her books or CDs can be purchased or downloaded from

Jack-u-puncture - Changing a tyre. One of the

few car repairs you can do for yourself and which
doesnt require a computer diagnostic.

Hip-no-therapy - Accepting that your joints arent

as flexible these days as they once were.

Experts generally
agree that lifelong
learning, as well as
being the beginning
of a tongue twister, helps keep the brain
active and the mind healthy. The only problem is
that not everyone wants to take up watercolours
or learn about archaeology. Alternative therapies
are proving popular, so maybe its time for some
new common-sense therapies?
Home-eopathy - Small amounts of decorating.
New-trition - Food fads and so-called super
foods (ask a hungry person and theyll tell you
that any food is super, even soup!).
Councilling - Ringing to let the council know
theyve forgotten to empty your wheelie bin
again.

Sigh-cotherapy - Perfect for couples who need

Fill-osophy - The opposite of New-trition,

where you eat what you want when you

Tie-Chi - Learning to tie a tie in under

15 minutes. The advanced classes cover
bow ties and cummerbunds.

Rakey Therapy - Tidying the leaves from the

lawn and pottering around the garden.

Coaching - Ferrying around family members and

friends. Also known as the designated driver.

Yo-yoga - The opposite of Hip-no-therapy. Being

able to stretch, bend down and get back up again

All these and more are available from the
University of Life. Class starts first thing

Life Begins
Confronting the Cold
Some Simple Tips to Keep
Safe and Warm Over Winter
By Kate McLelland

ver 24,000 people will be

so badly affected by the
cold this winter that their lives
will be at risk. The charity Age
UK has estimated that 1.7
million older people in Britain
cannot afford to heat their
homes, and over a third of
those people have admitted
to living mainly in one room to
save on energy bills.
In an affluent country such
as ours, its truly shocking to
realise there are people who
cant afford to stay warm in
winter. But its also surprising
to learn that we Brits have
some of the least energyefficient homes in Europe.
Many winter deaths and
illnesses could be avoided
if we had better insulation in
our houses.
In future we can only hope
that all new homes will
benefit from good insulation
and green technology,
but the energy efficiency of
millions of existing houses
could be improved by simple
techniques such as cavity
insulation. You can find out
whether you are eligible for
a government grant towards
home improvements by using
the Energy Grants Calculator
at www.gov.uk.
The government also
provides one-off payments to

30

help with fuel bills. People

born on or before 5 July 1952
will get tax-free, automatic
payments of between 100300 if they are receiving
the State Pension or another
social security benefit (not
including Housing Benefit,
Council Tax Reduction,
Child Benefit or Universal
Credit). You can learn more
about Winter Fuel Payments
by calling 08459 151515
(8.30am-4.30pm, Monday to
Friday) or visiting www.gov.
uk/winter-fuel-payment.
The Cold Weather Payments
Scheme offers top-up
payments of 25 to people
who receive certain types
of benefit (you can check
your eligibility at www.gov.
uk). Payments will kick in
if the temperature drops to
an average of 0C or below
for seven consecutive days
between 1st November 2014
and 31st March 2015.
If youre not eligible for
government support, you
can still take action to keep
heating bills down. Compare
your current gas and
electricity suppliers prices
with other providers at www.
uswitch.com: you might be
able to save up to 383 by
switching.
The expression Every

little helps may have been

hijacked by one of our
leading supermarkets but its
particularly true if you cant
afford to heat your house.
Here are some more practical
steps you can take to keep
the cold at bay:
Clothing and exercise
Its better to wear several
thin layers rather than
one thick one, because
each layer traps warm air
close to the body. Choose
clothes made from fleecy
fabrics, wool or cotton. It
may seem strange to wear
a hat and scarf indoors
but a lot of warmth is lost
through the head and
neck, so its a sensible
way to guard against heat
loss.

Wear warm clothes in

bed, including thermal
underwear and bed socks:
you could even keep your
hat on in bed if its really
cold! Try not to sit still for
long periods of time, but if
you have to sit, keep your
feet off the ground and
cover yourself with a shawl
or a blanket.
If you allow yourself to
become seriously chilled,
your energy levels will
wind down, making it
even more difficult to keep

warm. You can prevent

this by getting up and
moving around, at least
once an hour.

Energy saving tips

Draw your curtains as
soon as it gets dark to
stop the heat escaping.
Have the central heating
system regularly serviced
to ensure that it is working
as efficiently as possible,
keep the chimney swept,
check that the stopcock is
working properly and take
sensible steps to insulate
against draughts. Thermal
linings for curtains, and
even keyhole covers on
doors can significantly
reduce the amount of cold
air that enters your home.
Keep windows and doors
(even internal doors)
closed. Set your central
heating to the right
temperature: your main

living room should be

around 21C (70F) and
your bedroom should be
around 18C (65F). In
very cold weather its more
energy efficient to extend
the period that your central
heating stays on from
morning to night than to
turn the thermostat up.
Switch TVs and
microwaves off at the wall
rather than leaving them
on standby, and dont
add any more water than
necessary when boiling
the kettle.

lunch and dinner. Keep

healthy by eating fruit and
vegetables.

All this may sound rather

depressing but on average
the UK only experiences a
maximum of five or six really
cold days each year. While
its difficult to face those
freezing temperatures, it
helps to know that our winter
woes will quickly be forgotten
as soon as the spring
sunshine appears.

Food and drink

Drink plenty of hot drinks
throughout the day. Make
sure you have regular
hot meals that include
carbohydrates such as
potatoes, rice, pasta and
bread. Have porridge
with hot milk for breakfast
and soups and stews for

Mushroom & Chicken Pot Pies

Makes 4

Ready in 1 hour
These perfectly portioned individual
pies make a filling lunch or supper
simply served with steamed vegetables.
You can use any mix of mushrooms but
its worth looking out for packs of mixed
exotic mushrooms for extra
flavour.

Place the porcini in a heatproof bowl and cover with

150ml boiling water. Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7.

Ingredients:

Heat the butter and half the olive oil in a large frying
pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until softened.
Add the garlic and fry for a further 3-4 minutes then
stir in all the mushrooms and fry over a high heat until
softened. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

25g dried porcini

mushrooms
25g butter
2 tbsp olive oil

Add the rest of the oil to the frying pan and fry the
diced chicken for 5-6 minutes until golden brown all
over.

2 shallots, peeled
and chopped

Drain the porcini mushrooms and add the soaking

liquid to the chicken. Bring to the boil then simmer for
5 minutes until reduced. Meanwhile, finely chop the
porcini mushrooms and stir into the fried mushrooms
and shallots.

2 garlic cloves,
peeled and crushed
400g mixed
mushrooms,
chopped if large

Return all the mushrooms and shallots to the pan and

stir in the crme fraiche and thyme leaves. Season
with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Divide the mixture between four individual ovenproof
pie dishes. Brush the rims of the dishes with water.

250g chicken breast

fillet, diced
200g tub crme
fraiche
1 tbsp fresh thyme
leaves
300g puff pastry
Beaten egg, to glaze

32

Roll out the pastry to about 4mm thickness. Cut out

four circles of pastry big enough to fit on top of the
dishes with a little pastry overlapping the edges. Drape
the pastry circles over the filling. Decorate the tops with
leaves cut from the pastry trimmings and brush the
pastry with beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for
about 20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

ARGI+
Look Good, Feel Great, Be Healthy!

Increased Energy
Recreational, endurance and professional
sportsmen and women all have one thing in
common: they are exposed to physical stresses
and strains. In order to help the body cope in these
situations, we seek external support. Nutrients help
us feel in better shape and have more energy and
endurance.
Essential Amino Acids
The amino acids that compose proteins are the
building blocks of every cell in our body. They have
a great influence on the way the body functions
and are important components in muscle mass.
The human body requires over 20 differengt amino
acids, many of which cannot be produced by the
body itself. Some are nevertheless essential and
must be obtained from outside the body, such
as in the foods that we eat, to provide nutrition.
L-Arginine, amongst others, belongs to the group
of essential amino acids. L-Arginine can be found
naturally, including in nuts, poultry and soya beans.
L-Arginine increases feelings of wellbeing in many
38

situations and has been praised for its effectiveness

by professional sportsmen and women with high
muscle mass.
Valuable Vitamins
Vitamins are essential to life and assist our body's
functions. Vitamin C is especially important in
strengthening the body's defences. Vitamins B6,
B12 and folic acid also support the body through
stressful times. Vitamin K is ideal in supporting
the circulation and arterial health of active people.
Immediately after physical activity, a simple
carbohydrate such as D-ribose can assist in energy
regeneration.
Secondary Plant Compounds
Although plant constituents, so-called secondary
plant compounds, only occur in very small quantities
as bioactive substances in plants, they nevertheless
have invaluable properties: they not only give plants
their colour, but help maintain the body's natural
defences. There are over 30,000 secondary plant
compounds in all, some 10,000 of which we take in
with our food. Examples of these are polyphenois,
which are present in large quantities in grapes and
berries. Red wine extracts help to maintain healthy
cholesterol levels. Pomegranate has a particularly
high proportion of secondary plant compounds. It
is also rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and
vitamin C.
L-Arginine
L-Arginine is an amino acid that can be beneficial to
overall health. Our bodies convert L-Arginine into
nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels
relax and open wide for greater blood flow. Greater
blood flow supports many important functions in our
body, such as maintaining healthy blood pressure
and overall cardiovascular health.
ARGI+
Forever has a unique product, which contains this
essential amino acid L-Arginine plus secondary
plant compounds and specially selected vitamins, to
provide the daily strength your body needs. ARGI+
helps oxygen and minerals flow efficiently through
the body and has further benefits that make this

Dr Murad won the 1998 Nobel Prize with

co-recipients Robert F. Furchgott and Louis J.

used to signal blood vessels to relax and widen, thus
assisting in the lowering of blood pressure.

Give Your Walls A Facelift

By Katherine Sorrell

Terrific Tiles

Not a fan of wallpaper

but bored with paint?
Use your imagination
and ingenuity to create
all sorts of interesting
decorative effects on your
walls, says interiors expert
Katherine Sorrell

Hard-wearing, longlasting, easy to clean

and potentially highly
decorative, tiles are
often overlooked as
a wallcovering other
than for the inevitable
bathroom or kitchen
splashback. Yet they are
available in as great a
variety of colours and
patterns as wallpaper,
and can have just as
much impact. They can
be super-shiny or matt
and understated; sleek
and machine-made or
wobbly, rustic and handmade; even and smooth,
or knobbly and textured;
even digitally printed
with your own designs.
Something to suit every
style. Why not consider
tiled walls for hallways,
conservatories, laundry rooms
and utility rooms? Given their
fabulous decorative potential,
they may also work as part of a
living area, too.
Just how a tiled area looks
whether its a whole wall or a
small splashback depends
on a variety of factors. Their
colour, pattern and texture

are most important, of course,

but size (from huge slabs
to tiny mosaic) matters, too,
while shape also plays a part.
While most tiles are square
or rectangular, other shapes
are available, and can create
complex patterns that have
enormous impact. Your chosen
layout also makes a difference,
whether its a simple grid,
an offset design (also known
as brick bond), herringbone,
pinwheel or random. Will you
add borders or mix two or more
patterns? How wide apart will
your tiles be spaced? And what
colour grout will you choose?
Tiling may not be as simple
as it first seems but it can
certainly be rewarding.

Timber panelling

Wood panelling keeps heat in

and noises out, and is great
for disguising wonky walls
and. More than that, though,
it has fabulous warmth and
character. Choose fielded
panelling for classic feel, or
simple tongue and groove for
that cosy, country look. Leave
natural or paint to co-ordinate
with the rest of the room its
up to you.

Different types of tiles

Ceramic: relatively inexpensive, dont need sealing or polishing and are easily wiped clean.

Porcelain: heavier and harder-wearing than ceramic, and can often be used outdoors as well
as inside. Surface effects include natural stone, metals, concrete, fabric, wood and leather.
Glass: clear, frosted and coloured, and have a lovely, translucent appearance.

Mosaics: small ceramic, glass, stone, metal or even shell tiles, usually supplied on a backing
sheet and employed for small areas of decorative effect.
Natural stone: includes limestone, marble, granite and slate. Can be porous, so check whether
they need to be sealed before use.

Mirror

A wall (or a portion of it)

covered with a sheet of mirror
will reflect light around and
instantly make the room seem
bigger. The larger the mirror,
the thicker it needs to be, so
its often a good idea to get
professional help to attach it
securely.

Polished plaster

A centuries-old Italian
technique, also known as
Venetian plaster, involves
applying several thin coats of
plaster and polishing with wax.
The finished result boasts a
lovely depth of colour and can
resemble marble, stone or
suede.

Fabric

Choose your fabric, line it,

stretch it, and staple it to
battens fixed to the walls.
Theres no way around it:
this traditional technique is
expensive. It looks amazing,

however, and is helpful in

insulating against cold and
noise.

Composites and
laminates

They may seem dull, but in

fact sheets of plastic laminate
or solid composite have
decorative potential. As they
are waterproof and require few
joins, they make an especially
good choice for bathrooms.

Leather

Costly but eye-catching and

incredibly luxurious, leatherclad walls possess enormous
character, while their patina,
like that of a quality shoe, will
develop over time. Apparently,
they are even sound- and fireretardant.

Cork

Cork sheets and tiles offer

many appealing qualities,
from being warm and soft to
the touch to having insulating
and soundproofing benefits.

Whats more, they are highly

environmentally-friendly. A
range of modern colours,
patterns and textures is
available.

Sheet metal

Fancy an unusual wall

installation? Then opt for
sheets of metal steel, copper
or aluminium, say. Finishes
include different textures, lasercut designs or even designer
rust and, depending on their
patina and arrangement, the
end result could be either
overtly industrial or sleek and
upmarket.

The Iguazu
Falls
South America
By Solange Hando

he natives called them big

water and with an average
flow of 10 million litres per
second, Iguazu takes your
breath away, thundering water,
gusty winds, relentless spray
and great clouds of mist rising
above sub-tropical forest.
Visitors are likely to get wet
but no one seems to mind for
in this wild awesome place,
Iguazu is no ordinary cataract.
Just imagine a dark basalt cliff
face, 2.7 km long, shaped like
an inverted letter J, streaked
by up to 300 glistening
waterfalls, each one with its
own name, plunging 60 to
90 metres, from the upper to
the lower Iguazu river. Santa
Maria, exclaimed Spanish
explorer Cabeza de Vaca in
1541 when he discovered one
of the most powerful cataracts.
Santa Maria, as it is still
called, is on the Brazil side but
Argentina claims 80% of the
falls, including the highest, the
Devils Throat, reached by an
eco-train and a kilometre long
walkway across the upper
river.
Argentina has the falls, Brazil
has the views, they say,
and this is certainly true. In
Argentina, visitors arrive at

48

the top of the Devils Throat,

with just a partial view of
the other falls, while on the
Brazilian side, they take in the
whole panorama, first from
above and then, even more
impressive, from below. You
cannot beat the excitement
as you make your way down
the steps to the central point
of the falls and along the
amazing cat walk which
takes you to the heart of it
all, soaked to the skin but
exhilarated. Dwarfed by the
mighty curtains of water
roaring all around, you stand
and stare as rainbows come
and go like magic. No one
wants to leave but there are
other treats in store. Those
who are brave enough can
shoot the rapids on inflatable
speed boats, right up to the
base of the Devils Throat,
while others might prefer a
helicopter ride for a brief but
unforgettable birds eye view
of the falls in their pristine
emerald setting.
Surrounded by rainforest, with
visitors facilities well out of
sight, Iguazu is protected by
UNESCO with national parks
on both sides of the border.
On quiet days, you may well

spot some of the wild life close

to the water, from racoons and
monkeys to parrots, macaws
and toucans splashing myriad
colours in the trees. Caimans
bask in the lower reaches and
there are jaguars and coral
snakes deep in the forest.
The nearby bird park offers
a great alternative for wild
life enthusiasts, dedicated to
conservation in its own patch
of rainforest.
As one would expect, the
Iguazu falls vary according
to season, often at their best
around April-May when there
is still plenty of water and
skies tend to be clear. Today,
however, climate change
offers no guarantee. In 2006,
a six-month drought left
scores of visitors gazing in
disbelief at barren cliffs and
rocks. Yet, for those who have
seen all the greatest falls in
the world, Iguazu is top of the
list for its panoramic views
and unspoilt natural setting.
Even Eleanor Roosevelt, first
lady of the United States, was
said to agree when she set
eyes on this gigantic canyon,
born from tectonic movements
which began some 150 million
years ago.

Planting
Trees and
Shrubs
by Pippa Greenwood

his is a great time of

year to get planting the
soil is still holding a bit of
warmth from the late summer
and is now more moist and
provides good conditions for
roots to develop, spread and
establish.
Trees, shrubs and woody
climbers in particular are
often a very good buy at this
time of year so take a look
at your garden and see what
you could add, or perhaps
consider removing that
plant which has never quite
done what you hoped.and
replace it with something
new.
Planting trees and shrubs is
certainly not difficult, but it is
one of those gardening tasks
about which ideas seem to
change regularly and it can
be confusing if you read
widely differing opinions and
ideas. So what should you
be doing if you have just
decided to add a few trees to
your garden?
A good planting hole or pit
is essential, and you should
sure that it is several inches
52

(or better still more) larger

than the current spread of the
roots of the tree or shrub that
you are about to plant.
For years the advice has
been that plenty of bulky
organic matter should be
incorporated in to the hole
and the mixture with which
you back fill it. Investigations
now suggest that this may
not necessarily be the best
way of going about things:
make the planting hole too
cosy and the trees roots
may be inclined to stay in
the hole and not venture
out in to the surrounding
soil. In a heavy clay soil a
planting hole full of compost
may also end up acting as
a sump, so when the soil
is wet the compost draws
more moisture in to the hole,
resulting in waterlogged roots
and maybe even death.
All very logical, but then I
would also suggest that if
you garden on a very sandy,
poor soil, a well-prepared
planting pit (the bigger
the better) which includes
bulky organic matter such
as garden compost will

help to reduce the risk of

drying out, and increase
the chances of the tree
growing away well. Similarly,
provided the organic matter
is incorporated over a good
enough sized area on a
heavy soil, I think it does
help to improve aeration and
drainage around tree roots,
especially if you incorporate
some grit too.
Well rotted manure (ideally
from a known source),
garden compost and
proprietary bagged compost
are all useful in planting
holes and if it is largely an
improvement in soil texture
which you are after, then
home-made leafmould is
great too, and you can even
use the compost from this
summers patio tubs and
planters (provided you are
sure that it is free from vine
weevil grubs).
Next , to tease or not to tease
the roots? Im a teaser every
time, having seen thousands
of trees fail because their
pot-bound roots never moved
out in to the soil properly,
if at all. Planting depth is

To Advertise in YES MAG please call Richard 01492 541627 or 07598 234066

important too, so do make

sure that you cover the roots,
and only the roots, with soil.
Even the compost level in the
pot is often too deep, so start
from scratch if necessary.
Laying a straight cane over
the top of the planting hole
will help you to gauge the
correct depth more easily.
When I worked for the Royal
Horticultural Society at Wisley
my job as Plant Pathologist
entailed looking at thousands
of dead and dying plants
each year it was scary to
see just how many trees and
shrubs failed to thrive or just
died because they had not
been correctly planted . There
is no doubt that excessively
deep planting and entangled
and pot-bound roots were the
main cause of all that plant

suffering, so do take the time

to get it right.
Then of course there is
staking. I suggest only doing
this with large trees, apples
on very dwarfing rootstocks or
if the site is extremely
windy as a tree
will get tougher
and more resilient
if given a chance
to move around
slightly and so
form a strong
trunk. If you do stake,
short stakes at an angle are
now regarded as best, and do
use a good quality tree tie,
properly fitted so that the
trees bark is not chaffed.
Finally, remember that
aftercare is essential,
regular thorough

waterings will be needed

during dry weather, especially
for the first couple of years
after planting. If you dont get
the aftercare right, both the
plant and all that time and
effort (and enthusiasm) can
easily be lost.

What happened in...

...November 1962?
On 29th November a draft
treaty between Britain and
France was signed. It was
for a joint project to build a
supersonic airliner.
BAs and Air Frances
Concordes made their first
commercial flights on 21st
January 1976. They had been
beaten into the skies by the
USSRs Tupolev TU-144, but
this aircraft only ever carried
mail and the project was
abandoned after a fatal crash
at the 1973 Paris Air Show.
Concorde could cross the
Atlantic in under three and
a half hours, enabling BA to
boast that you were able to
Arrive before you leave. Its
illustrious and all-too-short
history was blighted by a
crash just after taking off from
Charles de Gaulle Airport

on 5th July 2000. None of

the passengers and crew
survived.

In April 2003 it was announced

that Concorde would be
retired from service. A bid by
Richard Branson to buy the
BA fleet was unsuccessful
and on 24th October that year
people in London turned their
eyes skywards at the familiar
thunder for the last time. And
this time their pride was mixed
with sadness.

Short Story
The Gunpowder Plot
Is there any chance you could
give me a hand?

Carrie looked up from the

library photocopier at the young
man. It was the same one
shed been discretely watching
across the bookshelves as he
struggled to finish his essay.
I need to enlarge this picture
and Im not sure how, he said.
Carrie reasoned that she
had only been watching him
because she thought he might
be the poor bloke that Marissa
had got her claws into. She
could see why; even though he
was wearing his jumper inside
out, he was rather cute.

As well as being a student,

Carrie worked evenings at
the college library, and had
come to notice most things.
For example, shed seen him
cast anxious glances at the
library clock, and suspected
that tonight was the night that
Marissa had finally agreed to
go on a date with him. There
was a big Bonfire Party in town,
and shed overheard Marissa
boasting that this guy was so
besotted with her he would be
buying her entry ticket and her
drinks all night. Poor man, what
was he letting himself in for?
Carrie stared at the book he
was holding out to her.
Im sorry? she said.

I need to enlarge this, he said

apologetically, Im in a bit of a
hurry.

If he was hoping to catch the

six oclock bus into town, Carrie
thought, he was cutting it rather
fine. Slowly, she took the book.
Sure, what do you want
enlarging?
Its the Palace of
58

by Jackie Brewster

Westminster. He pointed to
the page, I need it blowing
up.

She looked at the picture and

laughed.
Thats the Houses of
Parliament isnt it?

Yes, he adjusted his glasses,

its for an essay.
Youre asking me to help
you blow up the Houses of
Parliament? She giggled,
tonight of all nights? He
stared at her blankly.
Its bonfire night, she
explained.

Course!, he grinned, Im
going to a bonfire party.

again, twice; patiently checking

everything, but still nothing.
Im sorry, the machines
playing up, she sighed, our
technician will be back in an
hour, can you come back
then?

Got a hot date lined up?

Carrie said, and laughed at her
own joke.

The library clock chimed six.

The young man slumped
against the wall. The bus was
leaving without him.

We dont want you to be late.

Carrie smiled, I bet shell
have you hung drawn and
quartered. Knowing Marissa,
thought Carrie, thats the least
she would do. He laughed
nervously.

Im finishing work now. Can I

buy you a drink in the student
bar to help pass the time?

Something like that. He

blushed.

Carrie placed the book carefully

on the photocopier,
Does this make me a coconspirator? she asked, and
pressed a few buttons.
About what? he said.

About your gunpowder plot?

Oh yeah. He glanced at the

clock again and winced. Carrie
bit her lip and pressed the start
button. Nothing happened.

Thats odd. She gave the

machine a kick. It stayed silent.
Carrie methodically went
through the whole process

Cheer up, Carrie said

guiltily, Im sure she wont
mind waiting. It was common
knowledge that Marissa waited
for nobody. She took a deep
breath,

Why not? He managed a

smile, Youve been really
helpful.

Im Carrie. She comically held

out her hand, Whats your
name?
Its Guy, he smiled and shook
it warmly. Guy Fawkes.
Youre joking?
Got you. he grinned, Its
Tom.
Ill get my stuff and meet you
there in five. Carrie waved
him off, and, as walked away,
bent down and switched the
photocopier back on.

prints. Realising I still had an interest in Photography I

purchased a Nikon D3100 Digital SLR bundled with two
Kit Lenses. Soon after that I traded the Kit Lenses for
an 18-200mm Zoom lens and I was well on my way to
enjoying Photography again in a completely different
form... Later on I purchased a10-20mm Wide angle
Zoom and after several Camera updates a Nikon D7100
is now my main Camera with the 18-200mm Lens, the
10-20mm is now used with a Nikon D7000, this makes
life a lot easier than always swapping the Lenses over
on one Body and it also cuts down the possibility of
dust and grit getting onto the Camera Sensor when
changing Lenses...
My older D3100 now has a Nikon 50mm Prime Lens
attached ready to use for Street Photography whenever
I can pluck up the courage to take it on the Streets and
point it at People....
I the past few months Ive been privileged to assist a
Professional Wedding Photographer called Matthew
Turner from Menai Bridge (Blue Sky Junction Photography) as a second Photographer. He asked me because I
have a similar photojournalistic shooting style to him.
Im thoroughly enjoying it and its something I may like
to pursue when I gain more experience.
I have also recently been dabbling with Portrait Photography and hope to be doing this type of work in the not
too distant future too.

MIKE SHIELDS
PHOTOGRAPHY MY BIOGRAPHY

y interest in Photography first started in

the late 70's when I bought my first SLR
Camera, an Olympus OM10 with a couple of
zoom lenses, back then I took photos of anything that
moved... ...and most things that didn't!
After a couple of years of taking Colour photos which
was proving very expensive, I was introduced to Black
& White film, I managed to set up a Darkroom in our
(tiny!) third bedroom and started to develop my own
Black & White photos with some success and much
enjoyment.
In the late 80's we moved, to a two bedroom house
and I unfortunately forfeited my Darkroom.
Soon after that other interests and hobbies took over
my free time and I didnt pick up a Camera again in
earnest until 2011 when during a clear out I came
across my old SLR together with a couple of rolls of

Ive done some interior shots of the Showrooms for

James Payne Ltd Llandudno and the rooms in the
View Guest House Llandudno. My photographs are
displayed in the Breast Test Wales Unit on Maesdu Rd
Llandudno and I have Canvases on show at the View
Guest House on North Parade.
I use Photoshop, Lightroom, Photomatix, and Topaz
Labs to process my images.
My HDR Photography has very kindly been described as
"Different and Vibrant"
My Black & White images as "Dark and Moody"
My Landscape photos as "Beautiful and Stunning"
Whatever I'm photographing I enjoy the Taking and the
Edit.
I now use every chance I get to capture moments in
time that would otherwise be lost forever, like tears in
the rain.....
Many of my photographs have been featured in several
major Photographic Magazines over the past 2 years:
Digital SLR Magazine ran a six page feature about my
HDR Photography in their July 2012 issue, In their
"Photo-blogs" section in Issues 85 and again in Issue 86
I was afforded a two page spread in each.
N-Photo Magazine published one of my images (Bearded Man) on a full page in Issue 22 Summer 2013.
In December 2013 Amateur Photographer Magazine
featured three of my images in their "Spotlight" section
with one of them being awarded the "Editors Choice"

MY OBSERVATIONS

the Printers days later did you know if you had taken a
correct photo or not Many a time having picked up
my prints and filled with anticipation I opened the print
envelope to view my efforts only to find the film had torn
from the sprocket teeth half way through and hadnt
wound on after every move of the lever so I ended up
with 17 or 18 exposures on one frame..!!
What can you do but buy another film and start again.
Today, you just insert a battery and a memory card into
your Digital Camera and you can take thousands of shots,
you can check each one on the screen on the back of the
camera to see if you have cocked it up or not, if you have,
you can delete it and take several more.!
Back then when I was developing Black & White photos
in the Darkroom I had to place everything including my
hands into a lightproof bag and by touch alone pull out
the undeveloped film from the roll and roll it onto a
larger reel and slotted that into a developing tank. I then
entered the Darkroom to fill the developing tank with
nasty chemicals, jiggle it about for ages to produce a
negative film and hang it up to dry. Next day I cut it into
smaller strips and had to place each frame one at a time;
into an Enlarger to Nuke it with light and burn the image
onto photographic paper, then soak it in 3 separate trays
filled with smelly developer, stopper and fixer chemicals,
all this took approx. an hour or so, all done practically in
the dark I might add, and only then you had your finished
photograph

What became obvious to me from the outset in this

Digital age was the fundamental difference between
the Film Cameras of old and the Digital Cameras we use
today.
Photography in the 70s was a complicated affair. You
bought a roll of film with a maximum of 36 exposures on
it, opened the camera back, inserted the film into a reel
on one side of the camera, pulled out the leader end of
the film, fed it into a tiny slot in the opposite reel and
lined up the teeth sprockets, closed the camera, wound
it on until you were sure it was on the reel properly then
you were ready to take photos. After you took a picture
you had to move a lever across with your thumb to wind
the film on to the next frame. You kept a check on the
amount of shots by looking at a tiny counter on the top
of the camera and you had no idea what your photos
looked like. After the film was finished you had press a
tiny button on the base of the Camera to release the film
reel, wind it back into its case, flick a lever or pull a switch
to remove it from the camera then trundle off to Boots
or Max Spielmans (remember them?) to get the photos
developed and printed (which usually cost an arm & a
leg). Only then, when you got them back from

Today, you take your 16GB or more postage stamp sized

memory card out of your camera, (8 times larger than
the Hard Drive I had in my first PC..!!) stick it in your computer, transfer all your photos across to an virtual folder
in minutes, then with the click of a mouse, look through
each and every one in thumbnails or enlarge them into
super magnified mode and with a couple of clicks you can
import your images into computer software to convert
them into to Eye watering Colour, Black & White, or Sepia
if you so desire
With the Camera and Computer technology we have
today we possess the ability to take and make pin sharp
images with wonderful scenes in glorious colour, but
increasingly (and I admit Im guilty of this) we choose
to make them look like a photograph that was captured
a 100 years ago or with an instamatic camera from the
70s complete with bad focus, light leaks and oodles of
grain!! Oh the irony
