Pre-Reading:!
The students will make predictions about the story based on the
cover page.!
Picture Walk through the story.!
Review the Word Wall with chosen vocabulary from the story.!
Vocabulary Activity- The students will write the word down, then
define the word using dictionaries. Then the students will write a
sentence from the book using that word and create their own
sentence with the word.!

During Reading:!
Teacher Read- Aloud: Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, and
Kittens First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes!
You-Tube Interactive Read- Aloud: Lillys Purple Plastic Purse,
The Year of Billy Miller, Chesters Way!
Students will highlight vocabulary words in their stories as they
read/listen the text. !

Open Response: !
Draw Conclusions to the predictions made about the story and
discuss with the class. !
Write down personal connection to the story in journals.!

Close the Unit:!

The focus unit on Author Kevin Henkes will have a series of six
mini multiple choice and fill in the blank quizzes.!
The students will create a shoe-box project that depicts one of
the scenes from their favorite story and a summary of what happened in that story.
