CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard

contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or

owner and school factors:
- The University is a private entity, receiving some state support. Legally
autonomous, it is a member of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities.
- UCSC is located at Alonso de Ribera 2850, Concepcin, Chile.
- Ucsc university is part of the CRUSH which means that it is accredited by the
rector council. Nowadays university is accredited until 2016.

Pope John Paul II Ex Corde Eclessiae.

The mission can be expressed as

follows:
-

To lead research, teaching, and community service, in accordance with the

ethical principles of Christian faith.

Campus Location.

Students age.

Climate.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific ways that
these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching strategies, assessment
techniques, etc.
There are many factors that could impact or affect our lessons:

The distance between University Campus and students homes,

Location is a really important factor, because if the students belong to a city
too far away from Concepcin it can translate into arriving late to classes or
they might have problems if lessons are too early in the morning, or too late
in the afternoon. So this needs to be considered at the time of planning in
order to provide students with a certain frame of time to alud to be late if
necessary or at the time of evaluations.
The next chart is looking to illustrate the different places where first year
students come from.

Age average. Another important aspect to be consider is age average, most

of students ages are around 19 or 20 years old, this means that their
cognitive development should be around the same level , which can help
them to acquire input at the same learning rhythim. Even though students
have different learning styles what must be considered at the time of
planning to provide with lessons that look to fulfill the diverse learning needs
of students , and to make classes less boring and more attractive for
everyone in the classroom.
Climate. Concepcin it is a city with extreme climate changes and receives
an average of 2,600 mm of rain a year. Therefore Concepcin has a wet
weather in which prevails rain and temperate climate. Sometimes, weather
could directly affect students attendance and we as teachers should consider
this at the moment of check attendance, and the classroom conditions in
order to make students feel comfortable in class indepently of weather
conditions. For example controlling the heating or conditioner air depending
on the season.
Transportation, considering the fact that Concepcin is the second larger
city of the country, the transport system is likely to suffer a lot setbacks
which obviously can affect the student attendance to classes. For example

many times bus drivers do not stop when they should; consequently,
students cannot take the bus that will take them to the university. All of
these variables must to be considered.

Social movements and strikes (as an example: buses strikes). There

are times when strikes interrupt traffic and students cannot come to the
university normally, also bus drivers organize movements and students who
do not have a vehicle cannot go to classes.

Road conditions. Sometimes the traffic on the road can affect student
attendance or punctuality.

Students health conditions. Because those students who are unable to do

their activities normally because of health problems.

Catholic nature, acting ethically and in accordance with Christian

values. Because many students are not catholic and that sometimes is a
disadvantage.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below, describe

how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g., gender,
race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels) might impact the way you instruct
those students.
For example, your planning, motivation, management, or
assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific
instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
1- Affective filter of the students, Level of anxiety and motivation.
The first characteristic that directly related with students learning process is the one
that affect them in a psychological way.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
One thing that we were able to notice, was that emotions of the students and
teacher play a fundamental role at the time of learning. For example, teacher
should consider this at the time of planning in order to promote situations in which
the students are under a lower pressure. Situations in which the student

understand that it is acceptable to make mistakes, and this is something that can
be accomplished only through a good classroom management. And also through the
constructions of trust bonds between the teacher and the students. A good
classroom atmosphere in which the anxiety level is low, and the motivations and
respect inside the room is high might help the students learning process in a really
effective way.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
2.-Students personal interests. This factor could affect directly students
learning, as teachers we can use this as a tool and take advantage of it, but if we
are not capable to deal with it it could be a disadvantage.

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

An interesting task can captivate students attention. Therefore, using topics that
are related with students personal interests, we can create a feeling of motivation
toward the subject thought. In contrast, if we use topics that are not related with
students interests we could lose their attention because they could feel that the
topic is bored and also the subject.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:

Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct
students, for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each
example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you plan
and implement your instruction.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
1- Classroom arrangement.
The classroom arrangement was settled into a circle in which all the students were
able to see not only the teacher but to interact with the rest of the students.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

This is a key element because can be used as tool to keep students attention and
improve the classroom atmosphere. It provides an opportunity to the teacher to
monitors students work in class in a easier way . Also impact because it easier for
them to follow teacher movement and instructions inside the classroom.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

2- Use of board as a visual aids. The teacher used the board repeatedly to give
instructions , examples and the grammatical structures during class.

3.2.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

The board use inside the classroom is fundamental, because it helps to build a
bridge between the input provided and students learning process.
3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context
to provide quality teaching.
The information about our students give us as teachers the possibility of planning
the classes according to the context. Also provide us a really useful tool in order to
captivate our students in the development of classes. Moreover, help us to predict
classroom eventualities and reduce the frame errors, to prevent situations that
might happen during the class, because it provides a patterns for the students to
follow, which helps to create bounds of trust between the student and the teacher.
